Dunlop Trail Smart Tires

The Dunlop TrailSmart Tires let the adventure rider in you push on where the road ends and the trail begins. The TrailSmart takes inspiration from the market-leading Trailmax TR91, maintaining a similar V-shaped groove pattern that provides superior grip in all conditions, dynamic handling, a high level of feedback and precise steering. Incorporated into the tires are silica-fortified compounds that enhance traction and grip in both wet and dry weather, and helps reduce rolling resistance for better mileage. The TrailSmart Tires are a perfect option for the road less traveled and for riders who spend most of their time on tarmac with an occasional off-road adventure.

Features:

  • 80% on-road, 20% off-road
  • Optimal balance between on and off-road capabilities
  • Revised tread pattern for improved mileage compared to the Trailmax TR91
  • Intersecting groove pattern increases wet-weather performance as well as off-road traction
  • Large footprint and even pressure distribution helps increase traction and mileage
  • Silica-fortified tread compound
  • Exceptional cornering grip in all conditions

Dunlop TrailSmart...Initial Impression
Just installed these Dunlops on my 2015 Tiger Explorer XC and decided to give an initial impression. The last tires on the bike were Shinko 705's...so much more aggressive, bigger lugs etc. The TrailSmart's are much smoother, more road oriented, like the Metzler NEXT that came on it. These tires really stick nicely in the corners and give you a feeling of confidence. Because the front tire is a little bit narrower than the Shinko, the Dunlop tends to "turn in" quicker in the corners...not an issue, just have to get used to it. The one problem I was experiencing with the Shinkos was on the front tire (no issue with the rear). The tread pattern was discernible up through the forks to the handlebars producing a rough ride at slower speeds.
The smoother profile of the TrailSmart solved the problem. No more bobbing ride. Am unable to comment on the wet weather performance yet. The 705 were kinda
scary in the rain, especially cornering. And of course, no feedback on life yet.

Excellent milage, grip and they're QUIET!
BMW R 1200 GS LC 2015 : Looking for a tire that will give you longevity AND grip ? This is exactly what the Dunlop Trailsmart delivers. Last summer I rode my GS all the way to the east coast and back to California over an 8 week period of time. The bike was heavily loaded with about 100 lbs of gear and I'm 230 lbs in full ATTGATT. The majority of the ride was the Interstate slab, typically cruising at 85 mph. but I also had the opportunity to really wring the bike and the tires out during some spirited canyon carving. For the record, I ride HARD : Hard on the throttle while stiil leaned over and also practiced panic braking from 120 mph to 30 mph. I was mighty impressed with how the bike just took everything punishment I gave it while giving me complete confidence in the tires.

Despite my riding style, the Dunlops lasted about 2,000 miles longer than the Anakee 3 OEM tires. Also, compared to the Anakke 3, (many complain about them being noisy ) the Dunlops were much quieter. Finally, they are made in the USA - I believe in supporting American jobs whenever possible. I also had the opportunity to tour the Dunlop factory in Buffalo, New York which was a very cool place to visit. The buildings themselves are probably 100 years old, but the machinery is ultra modern. Surprisingly, a lot of manual labor and expertise is included in making these tires. It's not like you pour liquefied rubber into a machine and a new tire comes out the other end. The treads are manufactured in continuous ribbons and the actual amount of tread used for each tire is hand-cut to fit in the tire mold. That takes some serious skills and hand/eye coordination. The various tread compounds are formulated in-house and updates can happen rather rapidly as feedback from American riders can be applied quickly to suit American riding conditions. I don't see that happening with off-shore factories in say, China or Germany, where conditions (such as temperature and road quality) can be vastly different. 2 thumbs up in every respect!
