Olympia Women's Expedition Jacket

Olympia’s Expedition jacket is the most technically advanced women’s jacket on the market. It offers unmatched levels of adjustable venting plus their exclusive Three Layer Systems designed to deliver the ultimate in all weather, multi season riding comfort. Cut in a form flattering hour glass shape, this style also offers major adjustability at the arms, torso, and hips.

Layer One - Consists of a rugged 500 and 2000 D Cordura shell for maximum abrasion resistance. Olympia’s exclusive “Mega Vent Panel System” transitions this jacket from solid body, to adjustable airflow construction in seconds. Zip down Cordura panels at the chest, arms, and back expose ballistic air mesh panels that offer additional abrasion resistance plus adjustable airflow construction as needed. Forget having to stow away or misplace cumbersome removable vent panels as these panels stay attached to the jacket and fold neatly into self-storage pockets.

Layer Two - Consists of fully functional rain jacket that can be worn both over or under the main out shell as weather conditions dictate. A stow away knit hood with a lower rubberized aqua barrier conceals neatly under the collar and fits comfortably under a helmet. This detail includes Olympia’s exclusive front and back neck gator system to provide full circumference waterproof protection as needed.

Layer Three - Consists of a removable full sleeve thermal layer with authentic Thermolite insulation. This layer can be worn under the rain jacket or the main outshell. This handy zip in zip out feature ensures multi season riding comfort through a wide range of temperatures and weather conditions.

Features:

  • Outer shell constructed in 500 and 2000 denier Cordura fabric
  • MVP Mega Vent Panel System at chest, back, and arms

Expensive, But Definitely Worth It
I purchased this jacket to wear during a 2-week tour of Montana. I already owned an Olympia Airglide 3 Mesh Tech that I really like, but wanted better cool condition coverage. As it happened, my tour included conditions ranging from a rainy ride in the mid 60's to days in triple digits, giving the jacket a pretty good workout. It performed admirably.
--- In the mid to high 60's, I needed a long-sleeved base layer and the jacket's quilted liner to be comfortably warm. I suspect I would add the wind/rain layer for lower temps.
--- The jacket alone kept me dry in brief, light showers, but I definitely needed the rain liner/cover in prolonged rain and road spray conditions. It can be worn zipped into the jacket or over it. I used it only as a cover and it kept me dry for a couple hours of moderately rainy riding. I can't speak to whether it would do so in driving rain.
--- With its vents zipped, the jacket is comfortable through the 70's with only a t-shirt under it. I rode in a cami with the arm and chest vents open in the 80's. In the 90's I needed the back vents open, the cuffs loosened, and the jacket partially unzipped to remain comfortable. The mesh venting set-up works quite well as long as you're moving, but I stripped the jacket off immediately when I stopped in temps above 80; at a stand-still, the armor is intolerably warm. In the 90's I had to remove the spine pad to avoid rapid dehydration from copious sweating.
--- I doubt that any jacket is comfortable in triple digits; at that temp, air flowing through is HOT air. I have since purchased a cooling vest and will be wearing it under the jacket the next time I ride in really hot weather.
I particularly like that the wind/rain layer can be worn both under and over the jacket, and that the quilted layer can be zipped into either the jacket or the wind/rain layer. I doubt that I will ever wear the wind/rain layer under the jacket; I don't like how it feels next to my skin and it's far easier just to put it on over everything than it is to zip it into the jacket.
I am totally pleased with this jacket! It's feels like it will last a very long time, it's versatile, and it's as comfortable as one can expect an armored jacket to be. I am 5' 7" and 160 pounds, with a large-busted, aging torso that has lost its waistline. I purchased a Large to be sure I could add layers for warmth without turning the jacket into a corset. It fits comfortably and remains flattering even with all its own layers plus two base layers under it. I suspect that both my mesh Airglide and my lovely leather jacket will spend most their time in the closet from here on out.
PS: The jacket was pretty dirty when I returned home. I removed the armor, sprayed the especially grimy sections with Shout, filled my washing machine to the max, washed the jacket on the Delicate cycle, and drip-dried it. It looks great again.

Great idea, but slightly misses the mark
I got this jacket and pants combination in preparation for a two week trip ADV 4000 mile trip. This is my second Olympia women's jacket, but my old one was too warm for what I had in mind for this trip. For the most part, I really like the well thought out features such as the giant mesh panels that can be zipped up when warm and the included waterproof layer that could be worn on the outside or the inside (I wore it on the outside and it did a great job of keeping me dry and it is also highly visible). The material is comfortable and it wears well.

Olympia has just missed the mark in a couple of areas, however.

1) I ordered the same size as my previous Olympia jacket and this one was considerably smaller. I had to return the jacket for the next size up (This was no problem).

2) Olympia has been making their warmth liners stylish, so you can wear them as a light jacket when you are off the bike. This liner is well shaped, but it does not have a zipper of it's own, so you cannot use it as a light jacket when off the bike.

3) I am of average height and I am shaped proportionately, but this jacket is really short on me. It is so short, that if I reach up with my arms, it bears my mid drift (Note: the pants sit at my true waist line). This happens even when the pants and jacket are zippered together (the pants and jacket zip together in the back) and it can sometimes let air vent in while on the bike even in an upright position. It occurs to me this could be an issue should one crash at speed as the jacket would likely ride up leaving one's belly susceptible to road rash.

4) The back pad would sometimes fold at the bottom and create a lump at the small of my back. I'm not sure what caused this, but it was odd. I would readjust it and it would be fine again for awhile until the next time it folded.

5) The neck tab is not quite long enough. My neck is not particularly large, but I had a hard time keeping the neck tab velcroed closed and the tab would stick up onto my chin, which was irritating to my skin.

So, overall: I like the jacket and the design aspects of the jacket. I will likely use this jacket again and maybe try and figure out a way to get a longer zipper around the waist to attach to the pants.

Best jacket I have ever owned.
This Expedition Jacket is the best I have ever owned. It has shoulder, elbow and back armor. It fits well for the big girls. The sleeve length is perfect and it is comfortable and flexible while wearing. No more rolling up mens jacket sleeves! Awesome jacket!!!

Very functional jacket for 4 season riding.
I bought this jacket for my wife, who is 5'1'' 90 lbs. The small fits her well, and looks very good on her. She chose this jacket because of the excellent venting, and the warm liner. Using it in 85 degree heat, she was comfortable. I wanted her to get a jacket with good protection, and 4 season capability. She is very happy with the jacket.

After having the Airglide 4 and Airglide 5 jackets, the Hi-Viz and the Air Vents in the front/back are what made the decision for the Expedition. Last year we did 12,500+ mi from Tampa to Homer round trip--the Olympia jackets and pants were fantastic! But, as with everything else that goes on with a tour on a bike, the black/gray combo's just aren't the best to have in and around busy cities. Almost got creamed twice, within 10 minutes, in Seattle from cagers changing lanes and not seeing us.

Versatility, quality, color, fitment. What woman doesn't need a 4 season jacket, eliminating the need to over-pack. Also you don't look like a bloke in this jacket as the lines are very sexy and it is fitted for shapeliness. I have worn it in all climate conditions and it performs beautifully. I power-wash the white (pants too) in the car wash and it's good as new.

I already owned an Olympia Airglide jacket and really liked it. So when I needed a warmer touring suit, I stayed with Olympia and purchased this jacket and the pants designed to go with it.

First purchase from Olympia, am a fan now! Excellent fit, thought out. Did well in rain (w/o the liner); cold 50 degrees and then later in the day 100 degrees. The open and close panels really work. As noted, we've purchased more from Revzilla and Olympia.

Is the primary zipper a double zipper? ( once zipped up can you also unzip the bottom if desired?)
Deb L on Dec 6, 2015
BEST ANSWER: No but there is a lot of adjustment at the waist.
How long is the women's Expedition Jacker back and front?
A shopper on Aug 14, 2016
BEST ANSWER: My jacket is size Large. The back, from the seam between the collar and back to the hem measures 25". The front zipper measures 20 1/2". To figure out how these measurements might fall on you, I would recommend you stand tall and have someone measure you from the nape of your neck down your back and from your collar bone down your front. I have always worn a much longer jacket. I find this one quite comfortable when sitting on the bike. I always ride as a passenger.
How easy is it to keep the IVORY/black clean and looking good? Road grime does job on high viz..and gray is too dark for my liking.
A shopper on Apr 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I purchased the orange and yellow Airflow jacket two years ago and it has machine-laundered very well. I removed the armor pads, filled the washing machine for a large load, and used the gentle cycle. The only thing I couldn't wash out was some black dye that transferred from my dog carrier, where it rubbed the back of my jacket. I have washed it four time now and, except for the dye stain on the back, the jacket looks and performs like new.
How good is this jacket as far as accident protection? There is no shoulder, elbow or back back protection listed here? What level of protection and can that protection be upgraded?
Donna M P on Mar 30, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I purchased this jacket recently and it does have shoulder, elbow and back armor. My understanding is that it can be upgraded if you like. It can be removed. This is the best jacket I have purchased and a quality product.
Is there a rear pouch pocket to store the rain liner like there is on the men's motoquest jacket?
N E on Jun 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: No. There is not.
Hi there. How is the sizing accuracy? I fit between a S and M according to the chart. I already have a winter jacket so wouldn't need much layering. Thanks
