Could've been great.
First off, the workmanship and materials of this jacket appear to be very high quality. It has a great exterior feel, almost suede-like, the leather appointments are all well-placed, and the lining is soft and comfortable. I was hoping not to find manufacturing sacrifices just because this is 1/3 of the price of a comparable Belstaff, and I was pleased none were apparent to me.

Fit-wise however, I found myself a little bewildered. With the insulated liner in I noticed immediately that it was very bulky; not in a 'this jacket is too big for me' way, but in a 'this jacket will keep me warm in a blizzard' way. With the liner out the jacket definitely looks more svelte, but some of the design oddities become more apparent.

The first of these is the shape of the back. The shoulder seams lined up properly on my frame (5'11", 150lbs, 38 chest, size small) and from the front the jacket looks quite nicely fitted, but the back seems to have been fitted for Spongebob, with points of material sticking out above each shoulder blade. Perhaps it's to accommodate a forward lean/reach in riding position, but it is entirely unnecessary and looks pretty dumb it an upright or standing position. The reach aspect can better be handled by gussets at the shoulder blades, but a good length sleeve doesn't usually even need that. Also on this jacket, the shoulder armor sat too far back, not positioned correctly on top of my shoulder.

My next issue was with the elbows. This is something I've seen in multiple riding jackets, where their idea of a curved arm design results in an elbow that juts out ridiculously. When I ride my arms are typically bent at ~30º angle. There isn't a jacket in my closet, riding or otherwise, that restricts that degree of bend, it's not really any different than the bend in my arms when driving a car. Besides, you can add bend to an arm without having bubble elbows. The elbows as such cause the armor to drop to the underside of my arms at anything less than a 90º bend. They went and placed the adjustment strap at the bicep which does nothing to keep the armor in place.

Finally, and just sort of an amusement, when putting the liner back in I noticed that the liner sleeve is wide enough for probably four of my arms. Did they figure they might as well fill the vacant elbow room with bunched up liner? Anyway, I really wanted to like this jacket, it looks fantastic on the hanger. I could have paid to have it tailored, but that wouldn't have been cheap and just because $500+ motorcycle jackets exist doesn't mean expectations should be low for a $300 jacket.
