Reviews & Questions
Sizing was a bit small when using the chart; snug in my thighs and calves.
PROTECTION-wise.... they seem VERY TOUGH. I like that in addition to knee pads, they have hip and tailbone padding as well. And it's not too bulky, so sitting around in them is comfortable enough. The outer shell is a durable material that seems like it could stand up to asphalt.
The REMOVABLE PANELS that reveal the mesh openings come off easily, but only when you want them off, and are also relatively easy to get back in place. The AIR-FLOW into the pants is definitely nice, but tank/fairing aerodynamics play a part in how much wind cooling you'll actually get. The MESH opening material is pretty tough too- I've snagged it a couple times, thought for sure it would have torn, it did not.
The ADJUSTABLE STRAPS behind the knees and ankles do a good job of cinching the pants so they don't flap in the wind or rub/get caught on anything. Adjustable straps at waist are nice too.
***OVERALL I LOVE THESE PANTS.*** Good value for the cash, and they do feel very protective.
Now, a few MINOR COMPLAINTS explained in great detail:
The SEAMS around the waist have some rough edges that can feel like a sudden itch, that pinch feeling. Probably due to the fact that the material and stitching is tough(thus abrasive). They could have done a better job of smoothing them out for comfort's sake. This is only on bare skin mind you- so as long as you keep your base layer, boxers, whatever- pulled up, or a shirt tucked in, no discomfort at all. Alternately, some kind of fabric tape or a careful trim could do the trick.
Next, these pants have a PLASTIC BUCKLE at front closure overlay which makes for a stylish fly, but it's unnecessary... and an extra step in removing the pants. I'd prefer just a simple double-snap with no overlay flap. The fly itself does open normally though, so you don't have to mess with the buckle to get at your junk.
My BIGGEST COMPLAINT is the KNEE PADS. Positioning and sweat-factor. They sit pretty low in the legs when walking around, which is a little uncomfortable (just annoying really) but every time I get on the bike, I need to adjust the position of at least one of them so they sit on the knee cap- otherwise it's off to the side. (note I did get a fairly large size as I like my pants relatively loose fitting). But possible size issue is not relevant in the SWEAT FACTOR.... I purchased these almost exclusively for summer riding, and would like to wear a minimal amount of base layer... but WITHOUT FABRIC BETWEEN the bare knees and these pants, the knee pads are like mini SAUNAs. In no time at all, on bare knees, they just get SO HOT, clammy, and uncomfortable. ...no matter the temperature outside. This is due to the thin mesh that holds the pads in place. It does nothing to wick away moisture or let the skin breathe. The SOLUTION? -Wear base layer shorts which are long enough to cover the knees. If you wear base/regular PANTS, then you won't have this problem. But honestly, I wanted to just wear briefs, and nothing else under these- and there's just no way- solely because of the sweaty-knee element. I found middle ground in long, loose-fitting heavy-mesh athletic shorts as base layer.
Again- OVERALL THEY'RE GREAT. I'm quite happy with the purchase, performance, and piece of mind given by the protectiveness. If you can overcome the minor flaws, you won't be disappointed.
with the big 2 front vents, i was able to ride these from a warm 75 degree day to a 35 degree day.
I wear a 33 pants, and wearing these as overpants is a bit of a stretch. I ordered a medium.. maybe should have gone up to a large.
I have plenty of room for underarmor thermals underneath.
I like the hip and butt pads also.
Knee pads stay in the right place

I wear a 30 or 31 inch waist in jeans, so I ordered a Medium. Trying them on the first time, I must say that the waist is pretty true to size. The Atomic pants has adjustment cinches at the waist, and even heavy belt loops if you wanted to add a belt. The rest of the fit is snug and comfortable. It can function as an over pant, but it also doesn't feel too baggy if you don't wear it as an over pant.
The armor is pretty good at the knees. The hips have padding, not really armor, and there's even some padding in the seat, which makes long rides a bit plushier.
The pants also have a double velcro cinch adjuster at the calf just below the knees in order to keep the knee armor from wandering too much. These work OK, but the knee armor still wanders down quite a bit while walking around. A quick adjustment when I get on my bike and the knee armor stays in place while in riding position. I think I would have liked it better if the cinches had elastic or a wrap-around, like the jacket has. As a nice bonus, the pants have loops on the inside that match up with the Atomic jacket so that you can connect the 2 together.
As for ventilation and air-flow, the pants have a zip off panel at the front-thigh of each leg that work pretty darn well. I've been on a couple of 95-degree all-day rides in full armor: jacket, pants, gloves, boots, and lid. I wore a base-layer underneath and I felt warm, but not overly hot. My friends, some of whom had full armor, others with jeans and jacket, all said they were dying in the heat.
All-in-all, I highly recommend these riding pants. Definitely a 3-season pant: versatile, comfortable, well-built, and great features. If you didn't want multiple pants/gear for different seasons, it's a great buy!
They are pretty comfortable, and the waist, calf, and boot straps are more than enough to get a nice snug fit.
Matches perfectly with my Atomic4 jacket and looking forward to buy the Atomic4 boots too.
