Dunlop Q3+ Plus Sportmax Tires

The groundbreaking Dunlop Q3+ boasts exciting refinements and improvements over the highly celebrated Q3, which has earned a reputation as one of the very best high performance track / street tires available - and quite possibly THE best in terms of performance per dollar.

In the “Plus” iteration of the Q3 - the only hypersport tire made in the U.S.A -  Dunlop is touting an 80% redesign, with only the best features and the confidence inspiring character remaining untouched from the previous Q3.

Major updates come via new tech and a new center compound in the rear MT Multitread tire - resulting in both higher mileage and improved cornering performance. The Q3+ retains the corner-crushing CFT “Carbon Fiber Technology” sidewall reinforcement pioneered in the Q3 and features a very similar, steep, aggressive tread pattern.

The major trick up Dunlop’s sleeve for the Q3+ is especially exciting for riders looking to level up at the track - the Q3 Plus marks the inception of Intuitive Response Profile™ (IRP) technology in the Q3+ rear tire, allowing for greater latitude in choosing a new line mid-corner, while also providing remarkably linear, predictable steering. That means a wider margin for error so you can push yourself and your bike to new limits at the track.

Features

  • The all-new Q3+ offers superb grip, stability, steering feel and longevity on the street and on the track.
  • Dunlop’s Carbon Fiber Technology (CFT) employed in the Q3+ uses carbon fiber reinforcement in the tire sidewalls for exceptional cornering performance and feel. Aggressive Q3+ tread pattern uses minimal tread grooves that are long in length to enhance wet-weather performance
  • Intuitive Response Profile™ (IRP) technology in the Q3+ rear tire allows greater latitude in line choice while cornering, plus amazingly linear steering.
  • MT Multi-Tread™ technology in the Q3+ rear tire uses a silica-infused, long-wearing compound in the center of the tread for longer tread life, and special lateral grip compounds on the left and ride shoulders for outstanding grip.
  • Only hypersport tire made in the U.S.A., the Q3+ was designed at Dunlop’s Buffalo, NY headquarters, and manufactured in the Buffalo plant on the same high-tech production equipment as Dunlop’s racing tires.
  • Dunlop’s Huntsville Proving Grounds is the only motorcycle tire test facility of its kind in North America, and the Q3+ was tested extensively at Dunlop’s Huntsville Proving Grounds as well as several racetracks in the U.S.

the best yet!
The Supercorsas on my new 2016 S1000rr were cooked after 1600 miles.--the front was wasted! Being cheap, I always buy Q3's in the sping and get the rebate. This year I went for the Q3 Plus and what a difference. Way better than the old Q3's on so many levels. Front grip is equal to or better than Supercorsa SP. I feel like I can trail brake into corners as if I'm on slicks at the track. And after 1000 miles, they look like they'll go forever. --no sign of wear! Way to go Dunlop.

To start off I want to make a disclaimer that as far as hyper sport tires I have never used anything besides Dunlop. However, I can say that in the process of learning to corner aggressively and taking it to the track and being at higher lean angles this tire is a monster and deserves the reputation it has. The look is great and the performance is better. Im beyond confident with these tires and never doubt it is equipment error if anything went wrong. They hold up and keep you planted to the floor. Durability, like any great grip tire is going to be an issue and its something that you have to deal with. If you wanna commute every day I wouldn't say get these unless you have a hefty wallet to replace them. I got about 2k out of mine riding canyons avidly and hard. And I don't regret any of it. If you wanna step it up, grab a set of these you wont be disappointed.

OK, I Get It Now....
I figured it out. At first the "new" Q3+ seemed just like the old. Good grip, nice turn in, very predictable. On Eastern Oregon chip seal (nothing but deserted twisties out here) my Q3 rear lasts about 2500 miles, but after 1500 miles they start squaring off. The center section flattens out, and the handling of my Speed Triple starts to feel notchy.

If you look closely at the Q3+, there''s a dark grey section 2 3/4" wide in the center of the tire. I think that's the harder compound. So far I've put 1800 miles on the Q3+, and the profile is still round; no "flat spot" down the center. I doubt if I'll get more than 2500 miles out of this tire, but the last 1000 miles will most likely be without that annoying flat spot....

Yeah, I would recommend the Q3+...

Good track tires
I track my ZX-10R (2014). Been riding it at the track (NJMP Lightning and Thunderbolt, NYST, and PittRace), for about a year and a half. My bike came with Battlax BT016's on it. It was really the only experience I've had with tires, so I really didn't pay attention to people who said one tire or another was good or crap. I put about 3000 miles of "aggressive" street riding on them, plus 11 track days. I had some life left in them but I was feeling like I was at the limit of traction. It was time for an upgrade. I swapped them out with Q3's front and back and couldn't be happier. I was so much more comfortable pushing the bike into corners on the track at steep lean angles. I think the tires alone took me to the next level of skill. But after 5 or maybe 6 track days, I was worn flat on the right side of the rear tire (NJMP tracks are 90% right turns). As I was getting ready to buy another set, I saw an ad for Q3+'s. So I looked them up and Dunlop said they were better, and the cost only a couple dollars more than the Q3's. No brainer!

Next track day, I had the tire guy mount my Q3+ and headed out for my 1st session (after spending 20 minutes trying to get the rear wheel back on the bike alone!). Here's my opinion after 3 track days on them. The first thing I noticed is that the compound seems to feel different to the touch. Kind of like a space age polymer instead of that old sticky rubber I was used to seeing. It could be my imagination but it just seemed different. Not bad, just different. The next thing I noticed is that there seems to be a very small "dip??" at the very outside edge of the contact surface. I thought I had left a chicken strip on the tire after my first session but it never went away. There may be some sort of 1/8"-3/16" of tire outside of the contact surface that is lower than the rest of the tire . Odd but not any kind of issue. the last thing I can say is that the wear on the surface of the tire seems to be much finer. What I mean is that the Q3's looked like any sticky black track tire with part of the rubber worn into shedding pieces across the track surface. It also collects other worn rubber from the track and almost vulcanizes to your own tire. The new tire seems to have the same type of wear but a much less coarse version of it. And I don't remember seeing any rubber chunk fused to it after a session or day is done.

Aside from these small oddities compared with the Q3, the Q3+ seems to feel almost identical to the Q3. I feel just as comfortable on one versus the other. I don't ride on the street anymore so I cannot comment on the tire life on the street. I broke down and swapped the fairings to race bodywork, so I can't take it on the street anymore. My season in NJ is over for the year I would guess at this point (unless Halloween weekend is still warm like it has been!!). So I'll have to wait to see if I get more than 5 track days out of them.

If you have never had a track-oriented tire on your bike and you like to hang off the side of your bike. I would highly recommend trying a set. The worst that can happen is you have to buy another set of tires in a while. But you'll get more than your money's worth in learning.

I left the grip and tread life as 4's because I figure I full sticky slick of some type is going to be a 5 in grip and probably a 1 in tread life. As street tire like my Battlax BT016's is going to be a 5 in tread life but a 2 or 3 in grip. SO no knock on the Q3+ tires, that's just where they fit in the spectrum in my mind. You may be very surprise though how sticky a 4 star tire can be!! ; )

Phenomenal Tires
Put these tires on my FZ-09 before my first track day and I had absolutely zero problems with them. They have so much grip and inspire so much confidence through each and every turn. I was grinding my pegs and toe sliders basically the entire time around the track and felt nothing but traction.

Having only ridden on these for about 100 miles, i cannot comment on the longevity. It does seem like they will last longer than the old Q3's due to the center strip of harder compound.

Wow, just... WOW
I ride a K1200R which is naked BEAST. Very heavy for a sport bike at over 500 lbs, but also versatile. I can throw it around in the twisties but tour it out for the long rides. I was considering the Angel GT tires before these came out. My concern was tread life. After searching, the Angel GTs claim the most longevity in any tire on the market. The problem I saw was the profile. It seemed very flat at the crown of the tire. When I bought my bike, the dude at 190/50 s on it. Not only that, I have a 6" rim while most bikes have a 5.5 in the rear. So not only was the last tire flatter but my rim was wider and it just wasnt as agile as I wanted.

When I heard of the Q3+ I was interested. I had the Q3 on my last 600 sport bike and loved it. Knowing my bike was heavy and big, I was skeptical, but I went for it. And wow, just... WOW!

The tires LOCK on turns, gave great grip on acceleration, and the profile is so sexy. If your bike fits it, id recommend the 190 size. Makes the rear looks so much better, especially if you have a single sided swing arm like mine.

Can't be the price. I love these tires!

Great tire for aggressive street riding
First off I must say excellent service from Revzilla as usual. These tires warm up quickly and really grip at all lean angles.I don't know about the tread life, less than 500 miles on them so far. Really happy with the performance. I will get another set when it's time to replace this set. The feel on the FZ 09 is incredible.

Overall very good tire but ...
I have had 2 sets for Q3s before this one. I have done pretty much everything with this tire.

Street: you cant override this tire on the street on dry conditions. Works extremely well. Super quick warm up and very sticky. The new center compound gives a lot of extra millage compare to the old version and saves money!

Rain: even on a 600 still very easy to lock the front tire in rain and to spin the rear on roll on acceleration! on lean grip is good better and tire works well if you hang off enough.

Track: impressive tire for up to intermediate class. Hold very well and you don`t need tire warmers. Warm up time is impressive , but at the same time overheats real quick also which is not good.
The thing which really disappoint me is that the track life of this tire is super short ! You will be lucky if you get 2 track days on hot weather. And around 200$ (with the install) is kind of pricey if you go often. They promise up to 10 track days for the Q3+ thats why i was excited to thy it out after the Q3. I don`t know how they come up with this but its no where near that. I have to switch brands unfortunately , even I love this tire!

I have dunlop tires on my other bikes and I love the way they ride and handle. They've also lasted me alot longer than other tires I've previously used.

These tires give you performance that helps improves rider confidence that could potentially lead to better reaction time. They grip and roll over curve is just amazing i felt i could almost drag a knee up in the canyons lol. Dunlops only tires i put on my baby!!

Can I mix tires??? I have a Q3 on the front of my ZX10R and I need to replace the Q3 on the back. I would be interested to try the new Q3+ though. Can I use a Q3 in front and a Q3+ in the back, or do I have to swap them both to Q3+. Mostly for track days. Thanks!!
Andrew B on Aug 6, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes, according to Dunlop, you can mix and match the Dunlop Q3 and Q3+. They are similar enough without causing an issue on mixing and matching, straight from the manufacturer itself. I personally just got done with a track day today (8/6/17) at Buttonwillow with a Q3+ on the front and a Q3 on the rear, and had a blast. Didn't notice any differences or issues. Enjoy!
Should we be taking tire advice from a guy with road rash!????? ;)
Andrew B on Aug 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Well, ya gotta figure that he certainly knows how far you can push it, right?
Is the Q3+ front have better traction than Q3 front ?
Darrell N on Sep 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: pretty much same tire. they changed the rear not that much the front !
Any word if they are going to make a 200/55?
