Klim TK1200 Illumino Hi-Viz Helmet

Boasting a full carbon fiber shell in a modular design, the Klim TK1200 Helmet is a technical knockout. The heat-polymerised molded carbon shell affords ample creature comforts while barely tipping the scales. Normally, modular helmets are heavier and louder than comparable full-face helmets. In the pioneering spirit characteristic of the name, Klim has elevated the standard for premium touring comfort and convenience in a lightweight package that will allow you to enjoy a longer, more pleasurable ride. The intelligent ventilation scheme achieves abundant airflow and diminishes heat without compromising the Aero Acoustically engineered environment, realizing heightened rider focus. Equipped with a Transitions face shield and Pinlock lens, the Klim TK1200 Modular Helmet is prepared for all weather conditions, any time of day or night.  Whether you are up against sunglare, wind, fog or fatigue, the Klim TK 1200 Helmet has been purposefully designed to eliminate any obstacles that may attempt to hinder your adventure.

Note: TK1200 has a narrow neck roll opening and snug cheekpads to occlude noise, neck roll will break in by about 5%, cheekpads by 15-20%.

Features:

  • Transitions face shield with included Pinlock lens insert
  • Heat-polymerised pre-impregnated carbon fiber weave
  • Intelligent ventilation
  • Aero Acoustic tuned interior
  • Removable and washable, moisture wicking, hypoallergenic 3D comfort liner
  • Quick release micro-metric buckle closure
  • Break-away chin bar reduces force upon the head and neck in the event of a crash with the modular system in the open position
  • One shell size
  • ECE 22-05 certified

Happy Customer
Pros:
-The helmet is very light.
-The Hi-Viz looks good.
-Vents tons of air.
-Pinlock is very nice. (This is my first pinlock so I have no base standard)
-The chin curtain sits all the way under my chin.
-Carbon fiber looks cool. (I love composites)
-Fits very snug and comfy on my head.
-Mechanical mechanisms work very well.
-Face shield is easy to open with either hand.
-Chin ratchet is easy to adjust and holds well.
-Transitions lense gets dark in under 20 seconds. (It is actually really cool to watch it change color)
-Pinlock is easy to instal
-Face shield removal mechanism is easy.
-Blocks a lot of outside noise.

Cons:
-If not adjusted right the chin ratchet is a little uncomfortable. (I finally found the perfect tightness today)
-Transitions shield could be darker. (Makes bright days bearable, darker would make it most enjoyable)
-Carbon fiber makes the Sena 20s raido a little fuzzy. (This is because the antenna is effectively in a faraday (due to carbon fiber being a good conductor if I am not mistaken) cage so radio waves are less effective))
-Tight fit putting it on.
-Front vents are open when the slider is in the up position and closed in the down. (I was confused at first until i looked closely)
-Front vent whistles when looking down at speed.

Unknown:
-How it holds up in a wreck.
-If it makes me look cool.
-If it is the answer to the ultimate question.

Love this helment
After a lot of research and trying on quite a few helmets this one was the winner, very comfortable and lightweight. It looks good too! The only improvement might be a little more airflow. I highly recommend this helmet.

Good but not great.
Helmet definately is pretty good. Its fairly comfy and looks great, but it whistles pretty bad when looking anywhere but perfectly straight ahead. Not great airflow but isnt too terrible. Shield is really nice. Super loud with a big windscreen as well. However it is suuuuper light. All in all a good helmet just not worth the price imo.

TK1200 Hi Viz
Just got the helmet and took it on a 850 mile ride to test out the helmet and some other gear I just got.

Helmet had a lot of features I was looking for. Transitions lens, Modular and Carbon Fiber.

As it turned out I got to test the helmet in 95 F heat and 42 F mountain hail and heavy rain as well as bright sunshine and riding at night.

The helmet was a good fit on my 2xl long oval shape. Seems to be a bit larger than my Schuberth 2xl which used to cause a hot spot on my forehead. Not a problem here.

The Transitions face shield is a great improvement in face shield technology. This trip had blazing direct sunlight and quite a few tunnels as well as rain so the shield got a work out and it performs as advertised. Switching back and forth took 15 seconds roughly but I never felt the need to lift the shield in the tunnels. It's an improvement not having to flip an inner visor up and down and it protects the entire face from direct sunlight. The shield does develop spots when it rains. I guess from the difference in UV exposure under water droplets. They fade quickly once conditions change again. It happened several times on the trip so it something that happens with Transition technology.

The helmet is very light and well shaped. Didn't cause much buffeting when I turned my head at 80-90 mph and faster. The helmet is noisy and the chin curtain doesn't help much. I expected this and always ride with earplugs. Hope Sena gets their act together soon with their noise cancelling technology. The hi viz model did not heat up on the inside even when it was very hot to touch on the outside. My Schuberth was like an oven in direct sunlight in comparison.
The Modular chin bar worked well and was easy to use once i got used to pushing up on the release. The face shield however will not stay in any open position at speeds over 40mph. It does not have a strong ratcheting and therefore can't be set in an open position while riding at normal highway speeds. This is a big failing in a helmet in this price range. Also, the face shield leaks. In a 30 minute very heavy downpour the face shield allowed water in all around. Another fail in this price.

I like the ratcheting quick release buckles and this one worked great. Easy to open with a big pull tab and big enough that you don't have to fumble with gloves on to get it buckled. Once it was adjusted properly it is easy on and off in seconds. Very well done for this type of buckle.

Helmet flowed a decent amount of air but as others have mentioned the chin vent whistles if you tilt you head down or to the sides. Very annoying.

Pros:
Carbon Fiber shell is well made with attention to detail and removable liner. Good aerodynamic shape and great CF looks. Chin bar is easy to operate when you get used to it. Very light weight makes it less tiring on long 500 plus mile days.

Transitions face shield technology works well

Ratcheting buckle is well done works great
Pinlock ready and comes complete with a pinlock insert.

Cons
Noisy
Seal around face shield leaks in heavy rain and the face shield will not stay open at riding speeds.
Chin vent whistles in any position other than straight ahead.

Overall it is a nice, not great, helmet for the price with a lot of good features. It needs some refinement so the shield can stay slightly open under normal riding conditions. The leaking shield would be a deal breaker if I rode regularly in steady rain like in the NW. The conditions it leaked in were extremely heavy rain that I would not normally ride in but at this price point I expected this not to happen.
