Bell Race Star Ace Cafe Speed Check Helmet

The Bell Race Star Helmet has been designed for the sport rider and track day enthusiast that demands unparalleled performance. Constructed using the latest in carbon fiber technology and developed through extensive wind tunnel and track testing, the Race Star's design features a superlight 3K Carbon Shell, Raceview ergonomics for unmatched visibility and the three layer Flex Impact Liner to manage slow, mid and high energy impacts. The Race Star continues the racing heritage of the Bell Star line, pushing the limits of helmet technology to all new heights.

Note: The Race Star has a very snug fit suitable for short duration, high speed track use. For extended duration street use, consider ordering one size larger if you are between sizes.

FLEX IMPACT LINER: Pro Star and Race Star helmets feature the Flex impact liner, a first-of-its kind, three-layer impact liner designed to manage energy from three potential impact scenarios: low, mid and high-speed. It does this by using three different materials at three different densities. As the impact becomes greater, higher density layers are engaged to manage energy.

RACEVIEW: The Star features two unique profile shapes for two distinctly different types of riding. The Raceview profile used on the Pro Star and Race Star uses an orientation specifically optimized for a tucked, more compact position. Conversely, the Streetview profile used for the Star is designed for a more upright, sport or touring position.

PANOVISION VIEWPORT:  No matter what or how you ride, one factor remains constant: the need for maximum visibility. Whether racing or going on a simple ride in the mountains, the ability to make safe headchecks and see obstacles clearly is critical. The Panovision viewport in the Star offers riders additional vertical and lateral visibility over the previous Star and more traditional viewports. This allows the rider to see better in a tight  or tucked position and make saferlane changes and head-checks.

VIRUS Cool Jade Power Mesh Liner: The Pro Star and Race Star feature the most technically advanced liner on the market. Designed to withstand the rigors of hard use in extreme conditions, the Virus liner allows athletes to stay cool, keep comfortable and beat the funk. CoolJade fabric from Virus has been infused with recycled jade to create a natural cooling effect. The ultra-wicking construction combined with CoolJade infused yarn decreases your skin surface temperature up to 10° F - keeping you comfortable, dry and cool.

3K CARBON SHELL: The proven 3K carbon fiber on the Race Star gives this helmet the look, performance, and feel of a true race helmet.

MAGNEFUSION  MAGNETIC CHEEKPADS: Allows for easy removal of the pads for washing and enables emergency responders to easily remove the cheekpads first before removing the helmet following an impact.

Worth the cake.
The helmet is really amazing (gold / carbon / black) it looks better than the pics. I'm riding with it today and will report back on noise level, etc. If there is a downside the Sena 20s didn't fit very well. The mic and actual Sena control mount was fine, but the speakers really didn't work. The Race Star has speaker cut outs....wait, nope, those are for your ears. EARS. I'm sure results will vary, but I'm going to attempt to use earbuds with this helmet. The comfort level with the Sena speakers installed went from pretty solid to pretty uncomfortable just in my living room. As far as fitment I was in the middle of the size chart for Medium and the Medium fit me well. Little snug, but not muffin topping my cheeks out of the face shield. Aesthetically the helmet compliments my Thruxton R fantastic. Picks up the gold in the forks and just looks sharp. Will report back on the riding aspect.

Great, but ended up getting an AGV corsa
Was in the mkt for a new, dedicated track day helmet as my previous track lid was a Scorpion DOT-only model, several years old. My search began just as news came out of this new helmet and the features sounded EXACTLY like what I wanted. I was particularly interested in the novel shearing/rotary protection factor of the dual EPS layers that made this helmet stand out from its competitors. I also ordered an AGV Corsa in ML to compare to the Bell M.

I pre-ordered the Bell and eagerly waited for months for it to arrive. When it came, I was a bit sad because the shipping box was totally crushed on one side, also crushing the OEM helmet box. The helmet itself looked spotless, so I tried it on. (Very nice, zippering helmet bag included btw)

Having high cheekbones, putting on the helmet was actually rather painful because the plastic attachments of the chin curtain to the shell scraped me when I pulled it on. Once on, the helmet fit nice and evenly snug around my head and cheeks. No hot spots after 30 min of wear around the house. Virus/jade liner has a very airy, lightweight feel to it and so does the foam within the liner, good support but not dense/hot feeling. I can imagine good airflow

The visor has great field of view sitting either upright on my SV650 track bike or in race tuck. Peripheral view is also great, I can't see the side borders of the eye port at all. The AGV has a narrower FoV top to bottom but similar side to side and in race tuck position. The Bell visor does NOT lock closed, instead has a firm click down, but I wanted something that may not pop open as easily in a crash....I can pretty easily knock the visor open if I bump the big closure tab. The AGV has a center locking mechanism, button to unlock, and no tabs to snag the ground.

The heavier weight of the helmet was very noticeable to me. Revzilla lists 0.5 lbs difference with the Bell being the heavier lid. On my head, the Bell has much more inertia during neck movements and felt like the CoG was up high on top of my head vs the AGV I felt had the CoG more between my ears.

Graphics-wise, I'm not crazy about either Bell or AGV's offerings. I though the Speed Check was the coolest of the current line but overall is very subtle/dull in person. It doesn't look much different than an all-black, matte carbon helmet despite the sections of clear coat.

In the end, I decided to go with the AGV over the Bell for comfort reasons and the fact that the price was similar (in fact, getting a closeout Corsa made it cheaper than the Bell). I think Bell made a good quality product but it didn't work so well for me

Initial Quality Issues!!!
I will hopefully be able to update this review after I get in touch with Bell and receive a replacement or replacement parts. The visor will not click in on one side. I have used multiple visors with no luck. Also, the push lock system on the clear visor it shipped with has popped out and it now sits loose in the visor. The replacement lens will not lock in on one side after trying for 20+ minutes. Such a shame because I've been waiting for this to ship for months. Hopefully, Bell will be able to sort out this issue because I would love to own a functioning version of this helmet because it looks fantastic and the performance is there.

Minor Design Issue
I was in the market for a new helmet back in late May and decided to take a gamble with this helmet as it was one of the few helmet options that offered the low-speed impact liner. I ended up going with the Ace Cafe style, which is pertinent to this review. Secondary features that interested me but were less important to the final purchase was the Carbon Fiber shell, virus liner, visor quick change mechanism, and the potential for noise reduction over my previous helmet. I received the helmet about two weeks ago and was impressed with the packaging and the fit and finish of the helmet. The fit for me (I have a more ovular head) was spot on, with the cheek pads fitting snuggly but not uncomfortably pressing into my cheeks into my teeth like other helmets I've tried. The past two weeks with the helmet have left me overall impressed with the airflow, comfort, and visibility out of the visor. Almost to the point, where I've nearly forgotten that I'm riding with a helmet on. It should be noted that just because this helmet is carbon fiber, does not mean that it will be lighter, rather the shell with provide more impact resistance than other traditional shells. This was pronounced when comparing it to my previous helmet weight.

Two major drawbacks of this helmet stem from a single incident that I had unfortunately so soon in this helmets life. A minor drop from about 12" onto asphalt. I've seen other helmets drop from this height with little to no exterior damage but this (what I would consider) minor drop landed the helmet on the rear spoiler, ultimately cracking it. The fragility with which it cracked is disappointing and part of my 3 stars given the relatively steep price tag. Honestly I would've paid an extra $100-$150 to have this item also made of CF just to avoid an incident like this.

I was upset with myself as the accident happened as a result of my excited puppy trying to greet me when it slipped out of my hands. No big deal, I thought, I'll order a new one. Unfortunately, at this time, and the foreseeable future, replacement spoilers are only offered in matte black and matte white. This is the other reason for my 3 star rating. It's somewhat forgivable given that this helmet was just released and is still being delivered but there are no current plans for production of painted or styled replacement spoilers. Meaning that the closest replacement for the Ace Cafe style is a matte black spoiler sans gold styling. So for now, I would ONLY recommend getting the Matte black helmet, which will not only save you $50 but also the hassle of not being able to replace the spoiler should you find yourself in a situation like mine.

One other minor issue I've found with this helmet is that it is not substantially quieter or necessarily louder than my existing helmet. I do wear earplugs but haven't found the wind noise to be less than my budget helmet.

Final thoughts: This is a good helmet with, in my opinion, one minor design issue.

Best in this price range
Great for oval! I'm 2x forehead to back. Left to right I'm a large to XL. This fit is brilliant and in the wind? Equally as brilliant! Buy with confidence. It comes with a tear off shield which makes sense as it is a racing helmet but a street shield option would be nice.

Will they have the speaker cut out for blue tooth like the pervious star version?
eric s on Feb 17, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I think they don't have the holes that they use to have in the previous version of the star helmet. You can see it by yourself when Anthony is showing us the inside of the helmet.
