Touring Motorcycle Jackets FAQ's
What's the most important feature of a touring jacket?Aside from safety, the most important feature of a touring jacket is all-day comfort. This is achieved through a combination of things: plenty of options for ventilation, a quiet, aerodynamic shell that doesn't "flap" in the wind, a plush liner, and effective waterproofing. It's all about reducing rider fatigue on long-haul trips.
Are touring jackets good for hot weather?
They can be, but you need to look for one with a good venting system. Many touring jackets have "zip-down" panels or "direct-to-body" vents that let air flow right to your skin. Lighter-colored jackets (like silver or sand) will also be much cooler than a black jacket when you're stopped in the sun.
What's the difference between a touring jacket and an ADV jacket?
A touring jacket is primarily designed for 100% pavement riding. It's often more form-fitting and aerodynamic to be quieter at highway speeds. An ADV jacket is designed to handle both on-road and off-road, so it's a bit more rugged, has a looser cut, and features more massive vents for off-road work.
Should I get a jacket with a removable or a built-in waterproof liner?
It's a trade-off. A removable liner is versatile—you can take it out to get maximum airflow on hot, dry days. A built-in (laminated) liner is more convenient—you're always ready for rain, and the jacket itself won't get soaked and heavy. For serious, all-weather touring, a laminated jacket is hard to beat.
How do I make my touring jacket more visible?
Visibility is a huge safety factor on long trips. Many touring jackets are offered in "hi-viz" yellow or orange. If you have a darker jacket, you can add reflective tape to the hard-to-see areas or simply wear a lightweight, hi-viz vest over the top of your jacket.
