Shark Skwal Blank Helmet

Light up the night.

Unless your headlight is approaching the 12 o'clock mark, your helmet is your highest and most prominent point. The Shark SKWAL Helmet features integrated LED accents on the front and rear vents that shout your presence to the world. A hidden switch under the clutch-side rim of the helmet allows you to toggle between continuous light, pulsing and off—sometimes you just need to disappear.

The SKWAL is developed for high speed stability, ventilation and acoustics. The aerodynamics are born from Shark's racing involvement and complex fluid dynamics simulations. An Autoseal shield system keeps the visor pressed firmly against the helmet to block out distractions like wind and the elements while a drop down internal sun shield keeps the sun at bay. A MaxVision Pinlock insert is a rider's best defense against shield fogging.

The interior of the helmet features a micro-stranded bamboo fiber that boasts natural moisture-wicking and anti-microbial properties. In addition to being ultra plush to the touch, the washable interior is also hypoallergenic.

The Shark SKWAL is a complete package that keeps you focused on the road ahead and keeps the outside world focused on you.

Features:

  • Pinlock MaxVision insert lens included
  • Quick release face shield system
  • D-Ring chin strap closure

Awesome helmet (with some small gripes)
Before I got this helmet, I was riding with a Shoei Qwest. It was a good helmet, but the round shape caused it to put pressure on my forehead during longer rides. I decided to look for an intermediate oval helmet, preferably with a sun visor, and I came across the Skwal. I commute 60 miles round trip on my bike every day, and I've been using the skwal for this commute for about a week. So far, I love it. Let's jump in.

The fit:
I got a medium, and it fits great. It's snug and comfortable when I get it on. The one issue I had off the bat was having the cheek pad buttons scrape my forehead when I was slipping the helmet on. I solved this by adjusting the way I put it on. If you have this problem, just give it a week to break in and play with the way you put it on.
One small gripe is that the button for the strap is a little too high up, so I can't really use it.

The Visor:
The flip down sun visor is great, as expected, and easy to put down with the dial/switch on the side of the helmet. the full visor, pops off pretty easily and has a pin lock visor included. I recommend putting the pin lock on, because without it, the visor fogs really easily. The visor is also a little more stiff than I've been used to when it comes to opening and closing it.

Comfort:
the pads are soft and nice, comparable to my qwest, and for the price point, that's sweet. The ventilation isn't as good though, but riding in Texas, I've accepted that I'm going to sweat anyway. This helmet is also pretty loud, but I usually ride with plug phones, so it really isn't an issue for me. (plenty of room for head phones, btw).

The Lights:
This was the reason I really wanted to buy this helmet, and I personally think they're cool as hell. I feel like I'm noticed more at night, from a safety standpoint, and I fell like tron riding a light cycle. It's a win win. the lights compliment the overall style of the helmet, which I think is pretty slick. Expect to get a lot of looks and compliments with this bucket.

Additional Features:
These are just fun things to note for people who are curious. The padding is designed for people who wear glasses. My girlfriend wear glasses and tried it on. She said it felt very comfortable. It also has divots in the sides for blue tooth headsets to be added.

Considering the price, features, and overall experience with this helmet, I'm very happy with my purchase.

Nice Bucket. Led's are awesome. I'm definitely getting noticed more. Fit is tight. I had to return a medium for a large. Large is still tight on my cheeks but it's loosening up. Upper ventilation is non existent until you reach 70 mph. Lower chin vent is also terrible but It will serve well in the cooler months. Flip down works great good coverage. Overall an excellent value.

My favorite helmet
Bought this helmet for the lighting, but it is much more than illuminated. The fit is really secure. My field of vision is complete left to right and I really like the drop-down sun visor.
Air flows well though the vents, but it is a very quiet helmet. Best of all is the sleek, aggressive look. I am very pleased with this item and recommend it to everyone wanting a stylish upgrade to their head wear.

Overall really good average helmet. Love the sun visor
Cons:It's slightly large in the fit of the back relative to the width of the front(around the cheaks).
Doesn't really cut down wind noise anymore than average, as to be expected.
The lights are washed away by any significant ambient light(bright moonlight, street lamps etc)
Pros: Nothing functionally wrong with it. It sits well has adequate vision etc no problems there.
The drop down sun visor is excellent. This is my first helmet with on, and I will be having it as a must have feature in any future helmets.
Charger for the light is well recessed so you can't feel it at all when riding.

Love it!
Beautiful looking helmet; lightweight, and a lot quieter than my old Bilt. Took about 120 miles for the pads to adjust. (I ride daily as a commuter.) Very comfortable fit. I've owned two HJC helmets also and they'd always put a lot of pressure on my temple, making a nice ride into literally a headache. Not this helmet! The drop-down sun visor is a nice dark-but-not-too-dark tint, very large and completely covers your field of vision. (It also makes the rider look fighter-pilot cool.) The lighting system get a lot of attention from sleepy morning commuters, and the gate security at work. The color is more hi-vis yellow than green, which is great because it matches my hi-vis jacket.

My only grievance is the fogging, which is typical in the cooler months but it seems more pronounced with this helmet. So much so that included is a fog-resistant lens from Pinlock that you have to install yourself. Admittedly I have not done so, but to me it's an admission of a design flaw and a post-production fix. Hopefully next years model will come with the lens pre-installed at the factory.
But don't let that stop you from buying this awesome helmet! Every helmet fogs a little, so it's not big deal.

1500+ kilometers and I still love it.
Ended up having to get a size larger due to the tight fit but it was well worth it. The shape fit perfectly and I love the sun visor. Took it for a 4 day trip in the Swiss Alps, at least 8 hrs a day and no headache! The lights were great for the dark country roads. Cheek pads are a little snug but tolerable. Pad cutouts for the com speakers made install a breeze and great sound. Very happy with this helmet.

Simple and Great
At first I almost returned it because it felt too snug. Then I followed the instructions on fitment. They explaimed it easily and said not to worry if too snug at first. It was true! After a few weeks it fits perfectly and I am really glad I held on. The LED function probably saved my skin on one or two dark and rainy nights already. Good stuff! It did not come with the speed buckle as advertiaed but I am okay without it. The included pinlock antifog visor is a revelation to me in the fog and rain. I love it. Ventilation seems a bit poor but my previous helmet didnt have a chin guard so it is not a fair comparison, I admit. I wish I could get it without the brand stickers all over it. I love the finish, but dont like the conpany name in three places on my gear.

1 week review
I've had this helmet for one week. Returned my Icon Variant after the screws were cross threaded. I'm done changing the visors out, I wanted a built in sun visor. This has it. Easy switch. Visor is very stable under high speeds. Huge difference from the variant to this. Comfort, noise, vision you name it. So far everything about this helmet is better than the variant, and the variant costs a bit more. Lights are built in and you don't feel the little charger inside, it tucks in perfectly. The lights definitely turn heads at night if that's what you're into.

Shark SKWAL - Nice, innovative helmet
First off, Shark helmets are top notch. I have two, and both are are excellent quality. The SKWAL is light and has some nice featutes. The sun visor is dark and you will not need sunglasses. The LED's work great and I use them anytime it is dark. VERY visable. Combine that with a white helmet and you get great visibility. I normally wear a medium, but require a LG in Shark helmets. I get some side to side buffeting at highway speeds with this helmet due to the squared off chin bar, but I'm on a naked bike.

Almost perfect. But....
This helmet has a lot of value for the money. An internal sun visor that works well even over my glasses, an upscale interior, and an excellent lighting system. It has two weaknesses. The first is the ventilation. I almost can't fault it for its poor top vent, because that is quite common on helmets, especially ones with an internal sun visor. But the chin vent? It's not hard to make a good chin vent. Sharks design on this helmet is one of the worst I've seen. It comes straight off the Speed R series. You push on the bottom of the vent to open it and the vents are on the top. You would have to be riding with the top of your head completely forward to get air in there. It must then flow at an acute angle and out a few tiny vents that vent only to the visor.

The other weakness is the faceshields opening and closing. The tab is on the left side of the shield, and when you push up on it the shield torques and flexes quite a bit. I worry about the constant torquiing/twisting weakening the shield where it attaches. Time will tell. It would work much better if the tab was in the middle.

There have been many reviews on its good points, so I won't go into that. All in all I am happy with the helmet. With a couple design tweaks, this helmet could be perfect.

Regarding the Shark SKWAL Helmet, my size in shoe is L (59-60) if i buy the SKWAL will it be tight if large so i get the XL or its ok to get the Large size ?
Mahmoud E on Dec 13, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Large should fit your head fine. The only thing I noticed is that the cheek pads will squeeze a bit more than other helmets. If that is a concern maybe a larger size might be beneficial. You don't want your helmet to fit incorrectly, though.
