Zippers are a bastardization of logic
Great style. Great protection. Great fit with a large (6', 190lb). Stupid, stupid, stupid external zippers.

I own other high performance Gortex shells for skiing. I assumed that spending $799 on a motorcycle shell of the same material would have exhibited the same properties that Gortex is famous for: wind and moisture proof-ness.

What the Apex shell has managed is a freak of logic - extremely expensive Gortex shell material perforated with s**t external zippers that leak water and wind like a sieve. I'd like to meet the genius product engineer at Klim that convinced management that releasing a product that's the equivalent of a weather proof house finished with fixed open windows is a good idea. He deserves a raise....or something. It's not like the Klim doesn't get weather proof zippers - for c****t's sake the napoleon zipper on this jacket (which, by the way, is protected by two layers of outside protective material), HAS A BRILLIANT WEATHER PROOF ZIPPER!

How...what...who...why? The coat fails at it's core purpose of 4 season weather protection because of s****y external zippers...which to their credit are numerous and easy to manipulate with gloves on. Surely they could have given us the same configuration with weather proof zippers knowing that during the summer we'd unzip the things rather than mandating screen door zippers on a $800 Gortex garment.

At this price point - sickeningly disappointed.

Awesome jacket, a buy it once jacket.
I have a 42in chest and a medium fits pretty well. It's a bit stiff at first, but it's breaking period is fairly short, less than a month.

Air circulates really well through the jacket. Wearing a backpack doesn't block any airflow because of the back protector.

There are a few issues, but minor concerns.

- My biggest issue is: I prefer to have gauntlet gloves tucked inside when raining, and there's little room to get the glove underneath.

- Wearing a base + mid layer fills the arms, leaving my arms a big snug. Not too big of a deal, still able to move around.

- Ask for the next version: I don't like the collar always being buttoned up and it smacks against the helmet in the wind. It would be great be able to keep it pinned open.

Great airflow
I live in Thailand and have been looking for a jacket that flows air well that is also GoreTex so when the massive rainstorm hits I can just stop, zip up, and keep going.

This fits the bill. The key is the arm zips -- with the forearm zips open and the upper arm zips open it really flows a lot of air.

I have it in gray so the sun doesn't roast me alive.

The trimmer style is great as well -- much preferred to the giant adventure jacket style.

Amazing in so many ways, not so much in others.....
Me:
6'1" 285 lbs, long arms; Commuter and avid rider; 2015 BMW 1200 GSA;

Fit:
Good, after the second return (3XL to 2XL). Arms are a bit small in circumference, especially if you plan on wearing a base layer underneath. I am a big guy, but my arms aren't huge, so there may be a fit issue for some of you body builders out there. I usually rock a long sleeve thermal and soft shell underneath in the fall. The body of the jacket can be a bit bulky. The material seems to bulk up in the upper chest. Overall, the fit is an improvement for them. You can not please everybody. Comfort is great. If you are not used to the inside mesh, you may want to rock a long sleeve shirt. I don't mind the mesh at all. My biggest gripe is the positioning of the armor. There is way too much play in the elbow protection in particular. Some double sided tape or Velcro can fix this easily, but for the money payed...it shouldn't be an issue.

Air Flow:

Amazing/ergonomically correct. Next best thing.....being naked. Zippers aren't the easiest thing to operate, especially with a gloved hand, but they get the job done. The side zippers are easy to open, but can be a pain to close (need two hands to hold the bottom).

Protection & Durability:

So far, so good. Can't say I have ridden in heavy rain, but it seems to do the trick in a normal rain condition. I have the black/gray. The gray areas obviously show dirt and stains more then the black (especially the chin area that bunches up as discussed previously. I haven't tried to clean it yet, but seems pretty straight forward. I haven't have an issue with zipper durability. The collar is o....k. Two settings and no tie back, Klim?....reallly? My biggest gripes are with the Velcro cuffs and main zipper. My prediction is that the cuffs will wear out prior to the end of its useful life. We will see.... Also, where is the protection at the bottom, so that your main zipper does not rub against your tank???? YOU HAVE TO MAKE SURE TO FLIP THE ZIPPER UP. Even then the body of the zipper still will make contact with things it shouldn't......like my tank plastics. A simple piece of fabric would fix this......

Features:

With the mentions above included, the features are good. Its a jacket people. If you are a pocket person, it works. Me not so much....I have panniers for all my "stuff". Arm straps are ok for small arms, but for us larger folk you wont be adjusting them to much. They do not hold the armor in place as mentioned in the description.

Style:

Not too shabby..... Klim is getting better at this game.

Overall:

Great jacket. Is it worth the price? Yes and no. The positives out weigh the negatives. If you are looking for a great commuter jacket, I would say you have a good time with this jacket. I haven't had it a full riding season yet, but look forward to rocking it in the spring and summer.

1 yr review: Awesome jacket
Live in the northeast U.S. Cold late fall and winter and potential for hot summer stretches (90F +). Bought the Hi Viz model May 2015 and wore 4-5 days per week commuting to work M-F and recreational street riding on weekends. Wore the jacket (no liner) almost all summer. Even on the hottest days with all the zippered vents open and all the armor installed, I stayed cool and dry from sweat. Love all the features on the jacket. 2 zippered pockets on chest are a clutch location for bike key and wallet/registration. The length hits at the waist, so its very sporty looking for a touring-style jacket. Never wore hi-viz clothing in 20 yrs of riding, but decided it was a good move for commuting, especially. The liner that comes with the jacket is very comfy, fits well underneath the outer shell and can be worn on its own if you choose. I feel safe and protected while on the highway at high speeds with nothing flapping on the jacket the faster I go. Cannot speak to the weather protection since I was never caught in the rain, but something tells me this jacket will take a beating. I bought the Klim Torrent pants about 5 months after the jacket. Wore the pants a few times on cold riding days this past winter (34-44F) and they did their job to block air, but I mainly wanted the pants to wear in case of rain.

Great jacket and venting
I ordered a size Large Apex in black. I am 5'10", 180lbs, wear a 42 suit jacket and L t shirts.

This jacket fits great, I can layer up with my heated jacket and long shirt no problem. The sleeves may be not large enough if you have very muscular arms. I'm average I'd guess, not pencil arms but not like Anthony if the videos either.

I've ridden in 88f temps and also a downpour of a rain. The jacket flows lots of air with those side vents open, and I really like the difference the forearm vents make too. In the rain storm I rode for an hour and stayed dry. None of the zips leaked. Klim says the zips are YKK Aquaguard that are water resistant, but looking at them, they are YKK Aquaseal zippers (when looking at the jacket compared to the photo's on the YKK site).

The D3O armor is nice and beefy, not the thin stuff that was in the Klim Blade jacket that I also tried. Very happy with my purchase and it looks and feels like this jacket will last me a long time (it's replacing my 18y/o 2pc Roadcrafter).

Best jacket ever. Been riding for over 20 years and worn multiple sport bike jackets. Rode this jacket in cold & heat and this is definitely the ultimate best jacket. Enough armor, air flow, pockets, and visibilty good. The touch of leather really gives it great style.

My Only Gripe: inner pocket needs to be deeper.

Jacket fits very well with Torrent "Over The Pants"

Works well
I had a chance to break this in on a 100 degree day in NY for a 12 hour ride. I was a little warm but when I was moving it was fine. The comments about the arms being tight is true. That's the only area I felt hot and sweaty. I got this jacket so I wouldn't have to carry a lot of gear. Plus for the protection. I ride 400 mile rides on the weekend and I hate having to stop to put on rain gear. Now if they only made pant for large guys.

Perfect winter cycle jacket.
Top of the line protection. Lots of venting zippers that come in SO HANDY. All zippers are of the utmost quality. Great protection from rain. I bought it a tiny bit large so that I can wear layers underneath it. (I prefer to choose my own layers rather than a zip in layer.)

Nit picks... The collar snap is really tough to do, especially if you put your helmet on first.

I got the grey version. (more visibility)

Good design and integration of Gore-Tex, for fall and spring riding, may end up using it in Summer as well base on comments from other riders. Protection capability is also a significant factor. Although on the higher scale of cost, I may just end up using two jackets instead of three, or maybe just one most of the time.

I purchased the Klim Latitude pants for 2 reasons. 1 - I have Klim snowmobile wear and it is the best riding gear I have ever owned. 2 - the 2015 Klim jackets and pants of different models (Apex jacket, Latitude pants for me) will connect together with a common zipper system. Please note they must be 2015 or new releases, prior years may or may not be compatible.

Ryan N on Jan 16, 2016
BEST ANSWER: It feels a bit constricting at first when I'm standing around. But once I'm on the bike and riding, I don't notice it. And it does a great job of keeping out wind and water.
I am 6' tall with a 42" chest and 34" sleeve. A 34-36" sleeve is "normal" for these measurements. The sizing chart, however, says a Large with 42-44" chest has a 31-32" sleeve which seems to be at least 2-3" too short for a 6' man with a 42" chest. Does anyone have similar measurements to mine and did the Large coat seem to have sleeves that were too short ....meaning a gap between a non-gauntlet glove and the coat sleeve? So....is the 31-32" sleeve found in the Large size correct or is it longer? Thank you. Chuck in Montana
Chuck F on Feb 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I am a similar size to you and have a real problem with the Klim sizing. I tried this jacket in the medium and large. Sleeves fit on the large but the body was huge. Medium fit in the biody but sleeves were too short. A shame as it's an awesome jacket.
Not really a question, but wanted everyone to know that while the Apex jacket may have been "designed for torrent pant integration" as reported in the description (it works great wit the Torrent pants), it also zips to the new Badlands pants just fine. Also, the gray Apex matches the gray on the Badlands pants perfectly. ?
Gregory L on Jul 29, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Thanks for the info! Do you mean that the grey jacket here matches the grey lateral and seat portion of the badlands pants? The jacket displays almost completely white on my computer screen... I have the gray badlands pants, and was thinking of buying this jacket. Are you happy with the badlands pants and Apex jacket combination?
One reviewer felt strongly that the external zippers were a design that allow air and water leaking. Are other folks finding this to be a problem? Very interested in this jacket but for $800 want something very wind and water proof. thanks for any more opinions on zippers.
William L on Feb 18, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Hi William,
I have owned this jacket for a while and worn it on my daily 120km commute to work. I have been through torrential rain more times than I like and have had no water in through the zippers. I have had water come in through the neck as the jacket is a size to big for me and I can't get a good seal around my neck. I can say it is totally waterproof, especially if you get the right size.
Cheers, Nick
How does this fair in warmer weather?
A shopper on Dec 27, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I bought this n the beginning of August here in PA. I will say that with the vents open it is find up to about 85 if you keep moving. It's really humid here in the summer so that plays into it. When it was in the upper 80s and 90s I usually switched over to my Alpinestars Viper AST, especially if I was going to be in a lot of stop and go.

I did however do a ride in the 90s with this on, an Under Armor heat gear shirt, and an Alpinestars chest and back armor piece. I was sweating like crazy but it wasn't unbearable as long as I was moving. For this coming summer I'm buying the Klim induction jacket for the super hot days.

I've been using the Apex all fall and still riding now and it's fantastic in these temps. When it's down in the mid thirties with all the vents closed and fleece underneath I'm just fine. I ride dual sports with no screens.

Hope this helps you out.
How cold is this jacket good for without heated gear?
Nick S on Oct 11, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I was OK at 52 degrees on my 27 mile commute with speeds up to 50mph with just a T-shirt on. If it had been too much longer, I'd have been chilled. Next morning I put on the heated jacket liner and did not even have to turn it on at about the same temps. So, with some light layering you should be good into the 40's unless you are on a long ride.
Question on sizing

Using the Klim size chart, my actual sleeve measurement is 32" and chest is 38".
Height 6', weight 165lbs
That puts me in the Large for sleeve length and Medium for chest.
I would typically just wear a shirt and/or t-shirt underneath.

I like good sleeve coverage so wondering if a large will be problematic/too baggy in the chest, especially with the vents open ?
William W on Sep 24, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I'm 32" sleeve, 40" chest, 5'10" height, 168lbs. Sleeve length is exactly at hand/wrist intersection in upright riding position on BMW R1200GS. Just purchased the jacket a few weeks ago and did first ride in it, a 450 mile tour last weekend on North Cascades hwy through Eastern WA and then back over Stevens Pass to Seattle. Weather ranged from sun to hail, averaged about 60 degrees. Unless it dipped under 45 degrees at altitude, under the jacket I was in a basic UnderArmour athletic long sleeved workout shirt and totally comfortable. Never used the vents. Big fan of Klim, use all their gear offroad, but this is my first on-road apparel purchase. I can emphatically say that the jacket is unbelievable. Weather protection is bomber but not at the sacrifice of riding comfort. 3.5 season jacket if you layer underneath, which I had plenty of room to do. A note: when you get the jacket and try it on, it might seem like the elbow armor is awkward. But in riding position (at least mine), it is totally comfortable.
Will this jacket match up with Latitude pants?
Kevin on Nov 16, 2017
BEST ANSWER: I am pretty sure it will. I think this jacket will match anything and the leather parts look just great and give a refined finish to it.
What pants zipper connect to this jacket? I know the KLIM Torrent & Badlands have been mentioned, but are there others or any types by other manufacturers?
Michael T on Sep 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: I have the Klim Latitude pants. Their look, construction and zipper are all perfect matches for the Apex. I've never found it necessary to zip them together...perhaps it would provide a little less movement in a crash, but it's not necessary to stay dry inside.
When is the Apex due to be released?
