What's this?

Icon Airflite Rubatone Helmet

Don't be pigeonholed into a certain type of riding. You may not fit into a neat little riding category so rock a helmet that doesn't either. The Icon Airflite Helmet can attack corners on the weekends and battle against traffic on the weekdays. It doesn't matter if you're looking through ape hangers or gripping clip-ons. The Icon Air Flite Helmet doesn't care what you ride. It just wants to go fast and look threatening.

Its chin vent is functional to flow air and terrify a la a Hannibal Lecter face mask. Intake vents snort in so much fresh air that you can smell pedestrian's fear as you're rolling down the block. They will not jaywalk in front of you. A drop down internal sun visor allows you to manage the sun or go to incognito mode at the flip of a switch. The injection molded polycarbonate shell is strong to absorb energy and remain intact just in case you unintentionally headbutt something solid. Its Hydradry liner wicks moisture to keep your noggin dry and comfortable.

The Icon Airflite Helmet has functional features and an aggressive style that stands out. Chianti and fava beans not included.

Features:

  • Injection molded polycarbonate shell for strength
  • Multiple oversized intake and exhaust ports
  • Fog-free inner sun shield
  • Quick-change fog-free face shield

ICON Airflite - Don't Waste Your Money
This helmet is fantastic.

Admittedly, the first thing that drew me in was the Aesthetics.
The elongated, narrowing shape of the Fliteshield is a very cool design. Once it becomes available in the RST colors, the unique design of the Fliteshield will be even more apparent. I'll likely be going with Red, but practically everything goes with Matte Black.

Now, onto the critical part: Performance.
Overall, the helmet performance is superb.

Ventilation: I was, initially, concerned with airflow. Until I discovered the chin vent was closed. I was pleased to discover that it was multi-position, and that at 70 MPH, the first position was letting in plenty of fresh, cool air on a 40? day, but not enough to freeze me out.

Noise: No helmet is soundproof, especially when it's lingering over an obnoxious Harley with drag pipes, but this one is great in terms of wind noise. At 75 - 80 MPH, I was still able to hear my music without cranking the volume. ICON definitely put some thought into the aerodynamic design of this helmet, and that much is immediately apparent when you get up to speed. So, not only does it look good, but it functions well, too.

Comfort: ICON helmets always seem to fit tight on me. That said, with this shape being intermediate oval, I don't feel any pinching around the crown of my skull. The cheeks always seem tight at first, but with time, they will break in and be as comfortable as any other helmet.

Quality: While I haven't had this helmet for very long, I have had to disassemble it to install a communication system (I went with a Cardo Freecom 1, to keep it low profile). The quality of the product is outstanding; the fit and finish seem like a machinist with Obsessive Compulsive Disorder designed every component on the helmet to fit in place seamlessly. The helmet liner is the company's Hydradry material, and while you might get toasty while standing still on a hot day, the liner does a good job of wicking away the swamp on your scalp. The Fliteshield and Dropshield both feel durable. This is important, as I want to be confident in the only thing standing between my face and a chunk of road debris at highway speeds.

Overview:

PROS
- Looks Cool
- Stays Cool
- Very Quiet
- Cost Effective
- Quality Materials
- Fit and Finish are great

CONS
- Speaker Cutouts provide limited range for adjustment
- Dropshield can fog when Fliteshield closed, at lower speeds
- Matte black material of helmet shows EVERY oily fingerprint

Summary:
Don't waste your money... on more expensive helmets.
If you found yourself looking at this one, you will not be disappointed. Once the additional tinted and RST Colored Fliteshields come out, you can zoom around your city, looking like Cobra Commander, a member of Daft Punk, or a Fighter Pilot who got his wings clipped for being too much of a maverick. And you'll do so in comfort.

Looking for something different?
I received the helmet today and just got back from taking it out for a test ride.

Pros:
Wide vision
Quiet
Cozy fit
Different style
Drop visor

Con's:
I had a little fogging to begin with
I can't order the chrome lense yet!

I'm looking forward to using this helmet more often!
I usually use my scorpion exo or my dark alliance, but this helmet is my favorite so far due to its unique design, and wide vision. Even when I put the face shield up it doesn't get in the way of my vision. Not gonna lie I call it the cobra helmet because with a silver lense it looks just like cobra commander from G.I. Joe.

A bit disappointed
My favorite helmet (Icon Airmada Rubatone) fits me perfectly, but is getting old. I've searched high and low for a long oval helmet that fits like the Airmada. I also wanted a drop-down visor and a quieter ride. And I really like the way the Airflite looks.

There are a few good points. First (and again), the thing looks great. I have a blue RST shield on it, which I think makes it look even better. Second, the liner is just as plush as the one in my old Airmada--very comfortable against the skin. The outer shield is also very fog-resistant.

However ...

Based on the video review, I was expecting this helmet to fit like my Airmada, but it doesn't. The Airmada is truly a long oval. This helmet is more intermediate. I can feel a pressure point on my forehead as soon as I put it on. Luckily it isn't bad enough to cause a headache, but it isn't that comfortable for those that need a long oval shape. If this is you, definitely wear it around the house for a while before you commit to keep it.

It also isn't quiet. The Airmada isn't a gold standard for low noise, but this thing is much much louder than that. At any speed above 50 mph, I hear a sound like two balloons rubbing together. I'll have to wear earplugs even for my short commute.

Also, though the helmet has great-sounding features, they aren't implemented very well.

The ventilation is good overall, but instead of one switch for top ports (like the Airmada), there are two separate switches. That makes it unnecessarily difficult to use while riding. Even more frustrating is the position of the front ventilation switch. It's inside the helmet, and is quite difficult to operate while riding.

Finally, the drop-down visor switch is a pain. It works backward (down is up, up is down), and is more difficult to use than other internal-sheild helmets I've owned (EXO-500, Nexx XT.1). It takes a good deal of force to flick it down while riding.

Since I've already ridden in it, I'll have to live with it for a while, but I was expecting more based on the video and other reviews.

Honest Tested Review
To start, this helmet will grab everyone's attention. Its extremely stylish and any colored shield you throw on it, steps it up another level. Some people complained about a strange noise above 70MPH, but I can tell you after testing multiple times over 70, that the noise is not there. The shield covers make a slight whistle when you turn your head at high speeds, but it is faint. Now when it comes to temperature control, you get to really decide how your noggin gets to feel. It has great airflow through the "Bane" opening in the front, and pulls alot of heat off of your head with the top vents open. I have riden this all week in Iowa weather, it has been 32 degrees here. My head hasnt had one cold spot the entire time. If you shut the vents, it will hold the heat. And if you open them it will pull all of it out. Great system. It fit differently than I expected. My head measured as a medium. My head was a 23 3/4" measurement. I measured at the highest allowed diameter that a medium helmet allowed. If your at the high range of the measured allowance, I suggest going a step up. I had to return my medium for a large. Not a downfall at all, because Revzilla outperforms everyone on their return policies, and got it refunded very quickly and easily. I would recommend this helmet to anyone.

Great helmet
This is an awesome looking helmet. Has very sporty appearance on a matte black Sportster. The a few things that I dislike about the helmet is that I did have to modify a small part on the cheek pad of the liner to fit a com unit on and still had to use the sticky mount instead of the clap mount on the Sena 20. Also the cut outs for the speakers didn't line up with my ears and I have to install the spacer pads to move them down. Also on the 20s extendable antenna dose interfere with the side of the helmet where the visor cover peices snap in. With using the sticky mount and adjusting the placement of the unit I was able to make it deploy without hitting the side of the helmet. After getting the com unit all squared away it looks good and fits great. Other then the negatives of installing a com unit. It's a solid helmet for the price point and has a very nice fit and finish. So the investment was good and I will have this helmet for years of riding.

First Helmet
I'm a lady rider and I purchased this as my first helmet. I tried it on in store prior to purchasing it here on Revzilla. I love the style, color, fit, and weight. I wore it for two straight days for the MSF course and it didn't cause any discomfort and it dried out quickly as I was sweating in the 90+ degree humid weather.

However, the cheek pads that attach to the helmet have torn at the seams because it is a tight fitting helmet. I've had them replaced through the warranty and yet again, they have torn after only a few times wearing it. Whether this a QC issue or something particular to my headshape, it's rather unfortunate. I'd like to see some attention to this as I'm sure it's happening to more people than just myself.

Otherwise, the only other issue I have with this helmet is that the drop down visor doesn't seem to be low enough. Again, this may just be the way my head is shaped but according to the way the helmet is supposed to be worn, the visor is a bit short for me.

Airflite works great!
I've always worn half helmets but recently got a smaller, sportier bike (Indian Scout) and wanted something with a bit more face protection from wind. I test rode with a buddies Icon full face in XXL and loved it so I found the Airflite in Rubatone (my scout is flat black). The sizing is spot on in my opinion. I have a large noggin, the XL I tried on in a competitors store squeezed my head so bad it began hurting after only a minute or so. I ordered the XXL based on my experience borrowing my friend's helmet. The XXL was slightly tight fitting at first, but now after 300 miles it is broken in well to my head and fits like a glove. Viewpoint is great, I don't feel like I've even got a fullface helmet on. I'm quite happy with the airflow, although living in Memphis, TN, well, I'll be back in a half helmet for the summer. But this is great for night use and during the winter months. Plus, it looks badass, so there's that.

Great Helmet (High Quality)
I was looking into a new helmet by Icon and the rubatone to fit the color of my bike, I also enjoy the look of the shield, I got the silver mirror and it looks great and turns heads. The overall quality of this helmet is a high quality creation and the padding fits great! I am a long oval shape and this fits my head perfectly. I especially like the new design for the air vents, the ones on the top part of the head are good but the one by the mouth gets you air coming into the mask to keep from fogging and keep your face cool.

Eye catching
The style and the look of this helmet are incredible and eye catching.

I noticed that is pretty loud compared to my old Nolan helmet.
aerodynamics is perfect I love it.

the issue is that looks pretty big from the outside, Im 5'6" and I went for the small size fit pretty good but makes my head looks huge,it almost as wide as my shoulders.

Could I wear my glasses with this lid? I have a shark sqwal that says you can but it does not allow me to wear my glasses.
Edgar O on Jul 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I wear both Rx glasses and sun glasses with this helmet, the drop down brown lense doesn't come in contact or get in the way with either pair. It is a bit snug around the temple area, so I have to kind of wiggle my glasses in a bit. My hope is that will change as the helmet gets more and more use. I've owned it for 2+ months and not used it every day.
Will I be able to wear my glasses with this lid?
Edgar O on Jul 7, 2018
BEST ANSWER: I wear eyeglasses everyday and that was a concern of mine. I am able to wear my glasses under the face shield...and can even drop down the inner sun shield without it hitting my glasses. Its a great helmet!
Hi, I wear a L size on Harley Davidson full face helmets, what is the recommended size for me with the Airflite? Thanks.
