What's this?

Icon Airflite Helmet

Don't be pigeonholed into a certain type of riding. You may not fit into a neat little riding category so rock a helmet that doesn't either. The Icon Airflite Helmet can attack corners on the weekends and battle against traffic on the weekdays. It doesn't matter if you're looking through ape hangers or gripping clip-ons. The Icon Air Flite Helmet doesn't care what you ride. It just wants to go fast and look threatening.

Its chin vent is functional to flow air and terrify à la a Hannibal Lecter face mask. Intake vents snort in so much fresh air that you can smell pedestrian's fear as you're rolling down the block. They will not jaywalk in front of you. A drop down internal sun visor allows you to manage the sun or go to incognito mode at the flip of a switch. The injection molded polycarbonate shell is strong to absorb energy and remain intact just in case you unintentionally headbutt something solid. Its Hydradry liner wicks moisture to keep your noggin dry and comfortable.

The Icon Airflite Helmet has functional features and an aggressive style that stands out. Chianti and fava beans not included.

Features:

  • Injection molded polycarbonate shell for strength
  • Multiple oversized intake and exhaust ports
  • Fog-free inner sun shield
  • Quick-change fog-free face shield
  • Removable side plates
  • Molded breath deflector

It's great but needs improvements
First of all. It does not fit like the Airmada. A more slim face is required to fit this helmet better.

Pros : Features ( drop down, Tinted visors, Airflow )
Bluetooth com fits. "scala rider packtalk" Even with clap mount.

Cons: TOO MUCH AIRFLOW. There are 2 vents on each side by your temple. After 70 + you cant hear much.

Opening the visor is a bad idea after 35.....

ALSO the drop down visor somewhat distorts your sight. It gave me a headache 10 mins after I realized it.

This helmet also rapes my ears when taking it off. But fits very nice when on.

In general, For $250 plus $50 for the shield. Not bad. The shield is somewhat 'thin' so that is something to consider.

Had a chance to be great... Instead just good.
Let me preface this with saying I'm a long time Icon helmet
fan and owner. My most recent one prior to this was an Alliance. I also own an HJC RPHA 11 Pro. I was considering the Airmada and the Airflite before I ultimately bought the Airflite. I picked this up in gloss white and have road tested it a bit.

I'll give my opinions on the Pros and Cons, then do a more detailed review.

PROS:
Aggressive style.
Drop down sun visor.
Features for the money.
Good Airflow to the face.
Decent airflow to top of the head .
Interior materials feel high end. Very good quality.
Very comfortable fit (i'm a long oval head shape) no pressure points.
Aerodynamic - I didn't notice any turbulence or strain on my head or neck at speed. Cutout on the back of the helmet helps air pass around you and help keep your neck cool.
Very wide field of vision.

CONS:
Airflow could be better. The HJC Rpha 11 has a brow vent, so does the Airmada from Icon. I realize now how much that helps. The Airflite would be great with a brow vent.
No 'city' position for the shield. It's either all the way open, or all the way closed. That should be obvious, but I'm mentioning it anyway.
Noise: Overall it's ok. But at speeds I notice a whistling noise. I closed all the vents to check that... and still I heard it. Gets steady above 50mph. Over 70 you surely notice it, but it's not enough to cause me headaches or anything.

Overall impressions:
I wanted to love this helmet. I love the mash up of the sportbike helmet and moto helmet look. Definitely not the same old helmet look. Some will love it, some will hate it, but to each their own.

I got this helmet so I could have a drop down sun visor so I wouldn't always have to worry about shield changes from day to night.

Head shape/fitment. I am a long oval head shape, I think this helmet is geared more towards that. Icon calls it intermediate oval... I'm not so sure. My Icon Alliance in a medium pushed on the top of my forehead a bit. The Airflite fits me perfectly, no pressure, but snug and comfortable.

The materials inside are great. Comfortable liner and cheekpads.
With the face vent open, it flows a ton of air to the face. The top vents do a decent job, but the lack of a brow vent is noticeable for me coming from my HJC RPHA 11. Icon has brow vents on other models, this one should have got it.

Here's my biggest gripe. Noise. Overall, it's suprisingly quiet. Personally, I find it less noisy than my RPHA 11, even with all vents closed.

BUT.... Icon could have done a better job with the seal around the face shield. It's not great. That whistling noise I mentioned earlier? It's coming from the air passing over and through the side plates for the face shield. When I put my hand over the front gap, the wind noise and whistling noise stop, and the helmet gets very quiet. The whistling noise sounds like it's right in my left ear. The left side is also where the lever is for the drop down shield, I wonder if that's related?

It whistles on both sides, but the left side is more noticeable to me. Overall it's not crazy loud, and isn't distracting if you don't focus on it.

It makes me think they should have paid more attention to the seal/gasket for the face shield. Due to the design and the large size, there's noticeable gaps between the shield and shell of the helmet on the top side, which likely leads to more noise.

So overall a very solid helmet. It was almost a great helmet. It feels good on my head, great fit for my head shape, and good features for the price point. Certainly worth the money in this price point, if it didn't have that annoying whistle around and over 50mph I'd give it 5 stars.
As it stands, I give it 4 stars.

Icon Airflite 2018
So far this helmet has been great. The chin vent has three positions: closed, one click down for air to your chin, and two clicks down for air to your face. The visor took a little getting used to being that it is not a typical visor.

It extends down the entire front of the helmet and flips upwards in the middle, meaning you can crack it like a normal visor but if you want it open in traffic it has to go all the way up.

The drop-down sun visor seems to be great. It covers almost my entire field of view except for a sliver at the bottom of my peripheral vision.

The helmet is also very light which keeps my neck stress free. It has bug openings inside for the ears to sit comfortably, I have large ears so this is nice, which harkens back to a dirt bike/adv feel.

My only real complain is how noisy the helmet gets with the wind. I guess it makes sense being so light and all the vents so I'll just use some ear plugs for rides longer than an hour and solve that issue.

Absolutely love this helmet
Coming from a Castle Atom Modular helmet, this is a much needed upgrade. The Clear and RST Blue visor doesn't fog up but it does accumulate dew/water drops which is almost just as bad. Makes seeing through it very hard. Unlike fog, you can't just open it up for a bit to clear it up. It has to be open for a long time at speed to push the water off. And in the freezing North Dakota temperatures, that's a no go.
Sadly the drop down visor does Fog, even inside my house which is 70ºF. But I'll take it. With the Castle I still have to ride with the front vent open/visor cracked in winter.
But this visor doesn't seal. There's a pretty big gap on the top, about 3mm wide. And the clips that hold the visor in whistle sometimes.

The fit so far feels fantastic. Slides on almost effortlessly, and the cheekpads are much softer than my Castle's.

BUT. Ohboy. It does fit True. Except the entry is small af. Getting this helmet off nearly takes my ears with it. Took me a solid 10 minutes the first time I tried. Hopefully that goes away with wear. But not too much. I don't want it to be loose like my Castle a few months in.
(few weeks later it no longer rips my ears off and fits great still)

The visibility is amazing. Crystal clear.

I ordered the RST Blue shield for it. Which I really wish was less see through from the outside and not as blue as I'd like :/
I may order a different one, oddly enough Red, Gold, and Silver seem to be the better colors for this (based on pictures)
It scratched really easily though :/

The dropdown visor could have been better implemented. It's slide up for down and slide down for up. The Castle has a much better switch on the bottom of the helmet. But the Icon's isn't awful. Just awkward.

The chin curtain seems to be nicer. Pops off sometimes when taking the helmet off.

The chin vent to open and close is honestly terrible. I get it, the faceshield is in the way. Form>Function this round.
But reaching into your helmet seems like a terrible idea for this. Not to mention that it's really stiff. It definitely needs break-in.
(few weeks later it still awful. Did not realize it has 3 functions at first. Closed in in the middle. One click down to get air to your face or one click up to get air to your chin. So going from open to closed is annoying. I'm always thinking I went and extra click and have to fiddle with it to make sure. Which isn't great when you need to make a quick adjustment on the fly.

Overall I'm really excited for this helmet. I think it looks phenomenal.

Icon
Helmet is great except for one thing...........the chin windscreen. There is no way to remove the helmet without this windscreen from coming off. So it becomes a pain in the ass every time you take off the helmet you have to mess with this piece and reattach it to the helmet. Every time...so i just threw it away.

Beautiful beast of a helmet
So I've never written a review before but this helmet brought me to the keyboard for the first time! It is absolutely visually stunning- add the RST silver visor and this thing is just badass. I haven't taken it out for a ride yet, but I already were getting nervous looks from my neighbors when I tried it on! This thing has great field of view, airflow is amazing, fit is a little more round than most Icons so take that into account. I can't say enough about how awesome this helmet is. Noise looks like it could be a slight issue but we'll have to see. Also, a bit heavy but those cons don't even remove a star. Go out and get this bucket!

Best >$300 helmet you can buy? Me Thinks Yes.
I replaced my AGV with this Icon as I'd had good experiences with Icon helmets in the past, and the price seemed great for what features you get. Gotta say, I absolutely love everything about this helmet. I own the White version and it so far is keeping relatively cool in the summer heat.

The visor allows you to see EVERYTHING, seriously surprised by the wide viewing angle. Drop down visor is a god send, and if you pick up an aftermarket gold visor you immediately start rocking the White Power Ranger look.

Super cool.

Air flow is great as you'd expect considering the name.

Really cant find a fault with this helmet at all, especially in this price range.

Will be buying a 2nd helmet for 2 up riding sooner than later!

Noise Issue
The helmet is beautiful. The drop down visor is epic. No fogging and all features allow plenty of airflow. Fit is snug and anti wet padding is comfortable. This helmet should be one of the best on the market, but there is a noise issue. It’s minor and can be ignored. Definitely switch out the see-through visor.

Would recommend
This is my first 'premium' helmet that I have ever purchased in the 8 years that I have been riding. I searched high and low to find the perfect helmet. I had already ordered a Speed & Strength helmet but kept looking while I was waiting for it to ship; then I found the Airlite. I was immediately drawn to the aesthetics of this helmet because it just looks bad***. I was able to cancel my S&S prior to it shipping so I could give this another look. After looking at it some more, I placed my order.
Box opening: My first impressions were that it looks really well built and felt of excellent quality. The shield was super easy to replace since I bought the RST sliver replacement. Very nicely packaged with all manuals and a sticker was included!
Appearance: The helmet speaks for itself. It looks mean, it looks aggressive, and it doesn’t look like anything other helmet out there. It was one of the main reasons I purchased this helmet. The gloss black is shiny and the silver visor just makes it pop. I really like that the visor mounting points are covered by the little trim piece so it isn’t exposed and gives it a really clean look. The drop visor with the front visor open makes you look like a fighter pilot.
Sizing: My head measured 60.96cm or 24in which put me at the high end of large and small end of XL. I talked to a RevZilla rep and he suggested I start small and go with large and if need be, upsize to XL if it did not fit right. I questioned it and decided to go with my gut feeling for the XL and I am glad I did. The XL fits snug but is not uncomfortable. I think the large would have squished my head and I would have been stuck waiting on shipping it back and ordering a new one. For me, it fits true to size. If you fall in the sizing range, you should be fine, but if you were like me, I was glad I went a size up over what was recommended.
Noise: I have been riding my bike to work the last few days and it is quieter than every other helmet I have had. Keep in mind, I have only purchased ‘budget’ helmets for $100ish over the years. I can’t imagine any helmet is silent but I am very happy that it does not sound like I am in a wind tunnel gong 85mph. Aerodynamics feel good when I look around and it doesn’t want to rip me off my bike which pretty much is naked (FZ09).
Cons: The gloss black helmet looks really good but it shows EVERYTHING that touches it. It is kind of annoying since I am OCD about it being clean because I have to wipe it down every time I take it off or put it on due to fingerprints. I wish there was some sort of clear coating that could be applied to keep smudges off of it. I took some Meguiars 2.0 car wax and applied it to hopefully protect it. For me, the cheek pads are a bit think and ride against my face. I am sure overtime, they will break in and loosen up so that might help. The drop down visor fogs in a hurry with at stops but clears up quickly once you get going again. The main visor only has two positions (open or closed) and no half way setting which can be a con for some.
Conclusion: Overall, I am very happy with what I got. For less than $300 total, I got a really bad*** looking helmet that has a lot of nice features. I really wish the rubatone one was in stock but I needed a helmet ASAP so I am letting the gloss black grow on me. I don’t feel like I over paid and got a lot of helmet for the money. RevZilla was awesome to work with, very response and shipped damn quickly!

Anyone else getting a really loud whistle on left side ?
T S on Mar 13, 2018
BEST ANSWER: Yes. I commented on that in my review of the helmet. I believe it's coming from the side plate, or has something to do with the sun visor lever. When I put my hand on the left side plate and push on it, the whistle stops. I may try putting some clear epoxy on the inside of the side plate towards the front edge to try and make more of a seal and see if that helps. This helmet was so close to being great, but that dang whistle is such a let down.
