Forcefield Contakt Shorts

The Forcefield Contakt Shorts are a specifically designed 8 panel riding short that features both CE approved armor and a 3D Coolmax Silver anti-bacterial chamois pad for maximum protection and comfort. Fitted with FLHex Armor from the Nitrex Evo family, the removable fully CE approved armor is just 9mm thick and boasts incredible multi directional flexibility and a super malleable compound which allows the armor to contour around the riders shape and flow with the movement of the body resulting in the most dynamic and comfortable armored riding shorts available today.

Insufficient coverage and protection
Although comfortable to wear, this might be good for hot summer days. I decided to order the Proaction shorts with 4 layers to ride in cooler weather and get more protection. I'm finding the fabric covering the armor inserts is fraying from wearing against my pants and the stretch losses it's stretch. I'm a 32 and medium fit just fine.

Too expensive
I have been looking for alternatives to my Bohn's which I turned from long pants into shorts. No armored undergarment is going to be that comfortable, but these $170 Forcefield shorts do not seem to offer substantially more protection or comfort. Yes, it seems like a well-made product. But, I think the Bohn's and perhaps some of the lower priced offerings here might offer as much or more protection. I have had the Bohn's for five years and they have held up. The only thing I hate is putting the padding back in them after washing. I do have pair of $99 Klim shorts and think they are very weak on protection. These Forcefield shorts do not appear to provide enough for the thigh or hips and the tailbone area is thin. The thick chamois crotch area is supposed to add comfort, but they feel like I imagine adult diapers might feel. Try something less expensive.

Contakt shorts for Mtn Biking
Worked ok, fit was a bit larger than typical bike shorts.
Protection in low slide crashes was nice. Wore under bike baggie shorts so cannot comment on abrasion resistance. Protection is decent, price is a bit high, but they worked. speed at time of impact with ground ranged from 5-20mph, so nothing approaching motorcycle speeds. tail bone protection did not interfere with seated bike position. Chamois for bike riding is ok, not bad not stand out.

Forcefield vs. Klim
I own the Forcefield Contakt Shorts and the Klim Tactical Shorts, this review covers both. I use them for bicycling and I think they would be fine for low speed off-road motorcycling. For riding a motorcycle on the street I use motorcycle pants with thicker pads.

Both the Forcefield and the Klim are well made and comfortable. Even pedaling a bicycle I don't notice them and they fit fine under all of my cycling pants. The built-in chamois works well. I haven't crashed while wearing them but the pads look like they would help in a 25 mph crash on pavement.

The Forcefield pads are about 8.5mm (1/3") thick and fairly hard. The Klim pads are about 9.5mm (3/8") thick and softer. Pad coverage is similar except the Klim coccyx pad is too short.

I wear size 32 pants and the Klim medium fit me well. The Forcefield medium is a bit larger, if I were purchasing it again I would choose small.

The Klim pads are sewed in so I wash the Klim gently. The Forcefield pads are removable (with some difficulty) for laundering. I suspect Forcefield sacrificed convenience for better energy absorption.

I also looked at the Moose Racing XC1 Base Armor Shorts but the pads on those appeared too thin for much impact protection.

Both the Forcefield and Klim shorts are expensive but nowhere near the cost of a fractured pelvis or femur.

Most of my riding pants have little to no protection in this area. These are lightweight and have additional padding for longer rides as well.

Having a look at these - are they meant to be a supplement to ones leathers/kevlar trousers to give Uber levels of protection or are they something that is designed to supplement say a pair of draggin jeans to give you a little more protection whilst still giving an air of normality?

(am assuming they can do both, but am interested in what application they are meant to be used in)
