Bell Star MIPS Helmet

The latest, extremely aggressive generation of a helmet that started a safety revolution in motorsports, the Bell Star Helmet, now with MIPS, has been reborn to serve the two wheeled masses with even greater performance and protection. Redesigned with a smaller profile for a more refined fit and tuned specifically for the upright riding position, the Bell Star combines the comfort and riding characteristics of a touring helmet with race-bred aerodynamics and performance.

The Bell Star feels small at first, it has a narrow neck roll opening and snug cheek pads to occlude noise and to mitigate movement at high speeds. These padded elements will conform to your unique features by a break in margin up to 20% over time as the foam compresses. The Streetview profile used for the Star Helmets is designed for a more upright, sport or touring position. No matter what or how you ride, one factor remains constant: the need for maximum visibility. Whether racing or going on a simple ride in the mountains, the ability to make safe head-checks and see obstacles clearly is critical. The Panovision viewport in the Star offers riders additional vertical and lateral visibility over the previous Star and more traditional viewports. This allows the rider to see better in a tight  or tucked position and make safer lane changes and head-checks.

Using prescription glasses or a preferred pair of shades is now possible with eyewear arm pockets woven right into the interior liner. A leader in antimicrobial fabric technology, the X-Static liner material is clinically-proven to provide bacteria and odor protection throughout the life of the liner. X-Static fibers are permanently bonded with a layer of 99.9% pure metallic silver. This silver layer is the key to X-Static’s powerful antimicrobial properties, as it creates an ionic shield that permanently inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi. Fabrics made with X-Static fibers are flexible, with the natural look and feel of traditional textiles, while offering all the benefits of pure silver.

A proprietary mix of Aramid, carbon fiber, and fiberglass delivers all the strength of carbon fiber in a more budget-protecting package. Woven synthetic fibers have long been proven to be some of the most practical solutions where lightweight strength is required. Bell's Tri-Matrix shell utilizes the combined power and superior characteristics of these race-proven synthetics, offering unmatched strength and durability.

FIT: The Bell Race Star has a narrow neck roll opening and snug cheekpads to occlude noise and to mitigate movement at high speeds. These padded elements will conform to your unique features by a break in margin up to 20% over time as the foam compresses.

Great helmet for slightly narrow head shape
I selected this after trying on and examining a lot of helmets. I am a fan of Bell helmets as they vent well and and fit my intermediate to long oval head. The only helmet I liked better was the Aria Signet-X but it was a lot more expensive but not significantly better. New anti fog visor coating really works, unlike other visors cannot get this to fog with breath. New visor mechanism is perhaps best there is currently out there. New magnetic chin strap only requires letting go of strap and it will properly latch after doing up helmet. As with most bell helmets first class venting although slightly quieter than previous helmet. I needed to remove aux top head pad for proper fit. Easy to install Sena or Cardo unit. Heavier than most helmets in this price range but also safer with a rare 5 star Sharp rating.

Not perfect but my favorite helmet to date
Here's my helmet history - Arai RXQ (tiny vents and pain in the butt shield removal); AGV Veloce (great helmet, flimsy visor ratchet breaks easily); Shoei GT Air (zero ventilation, super heavy, foggy).
Now I have a Bell Star - first the cons - no detentes except open, slightly cracked or closed like the AGV; tough to fit eyeglasses.
Here's the pros - vision - it's like nothing else, puts the Shoei to shame; ventilation is great the brow vent in particular; the chin strap so easy big flat D rings and a magnet to hold the loose end (every helmet manufacturer should copy this. The Shoei strap in particular is a royal PITA.
Fit is race helmet snug but it breaks in. Looks great too.

I realized just how good this helmet vented on the first ride. Normally when I stop at the lights in 100 degree heat - those other helmets I would grab the shield and flip it up for air - on this one I don't even think about it - lots of air, lots of 'space' inside. No need for a pinlock.
There may be other helmets out there that are better - one can never know until you try them but for me I rank the Bell Star at the top of those 4 - Shoei GT at the bottom, AGV I will never buy again due to the ratchet breaking and I see no point in spending $300 more for another Arai.

Awesome helmet
This is my first helmet all to my myself. Prior to that, I was borrowing a helmet. I am a new rider so I don’t have much in the way of reference points, but I do have some.
For my head size(Med) and shape(long oval)I went with a medium and I have no issues with fitment. I have almost 20hrs in this helmet, with many 3-4 hour stretches and I have no hotspots or anything like that. The neck roll is a bit small to get into but it’s for a purpose, it really helps seal the wind from coming up underneath. The chin curtain may seem small at first but any larger and it might pose some issues so I give it a thumbs up.
The helmet is snug even though it’s not fully broken in, but that’s the idea right, to stay on your head.
The aerodynamics of the helmet are phenomenal. I ride a gs500 with no fairings so I’m really exposed to the wind and the highways around my house are fast with traffic going 70mph or better. Headchecks don’t rip your head off and spoiler on the back of the helmet does a really job of prevent lift and it really stabilizes your head compared to a round helmet.
I don’t have any Bluetooth for my helmet yet so I can’t offer a great deal of info as far as space, but I can say that without, my ears have plenty of space to be comfortable.
The seal of the visor is great! There aren’t really any detents for the visor, it’s either fully open or closed, but there is a placement just before the shield snaps shut to use a “city” option.
As far as noise is concerned I have only worn one other helmet, everything is loud at 75mph IMO.
The best BEST part of this helmet is by far the venting. It is unreal. It’s actually so good that during colder weather I may need to invest in some kind of liner or balaclava. The front of this helmet is ALL intake vents! The back of the helmets ALL exhaust ports. The amount of air this helmet vents is ridiculous! Even in with all the intake vents closed, the exhaust vents under the spoiler remain open and they just PUUULLLLL air through the helmet. The amount of air this helmet flows is gonna be a real asset come summertime.
Overall, the folks at Bell did an amazing job with the design of this helmet.

Great,but...
My last helmet was a Bell RS 1 and loved it. However, after six years it was time to change it as the gasket around the visor was developing leaks. I have eyes that are very sensitive to light and the Transitions shield on the RS 1 was incredible so I decided to stay with Bell and get the auto tint shield again. The shield on the new Star MIPS is not a Transitions shield. It is called a ProTint and it is awful. Unlike the Transitions shield it has a weird green tint to it, does not go near as dark, and at night on coming headlights really magnify the distortions in the visor. Now, it is better than having to carry a clear visor in case you get caught out after dark, but no where near as nice as the Transitions visor on the RS 1.

As has been said in most of the other posts, the amount of air this helmet moves is simply unbelievable. Last night I had all the vents closed and was still getting more airflow than all my other helmets with the vents open. Unfortunately, riding in Alaska, this is some what of a problem when you are using the helmet for warmth as much as safety. But on hot days if you can't cool your head down enough, you have missed opening a vent or two.

I have an XL, and it fits the top of my head fine, but with a fat face, I went with the smallest cheek pads, and it is breaking in ok. That is a nice feature of this helmet, being able to tune the fit with different size cheek pads. I do have a problem with the way it fits over the ears. It takes bit of work to get a comfortable fit in the "ear pockets" so the lower part of the ear is not pinched. It is also hard to put on and keep earbuds in. About 20 percent of the time I have pull it off and put the left ear bud back in.

As for noise, I think it is generous to give it a average rating. I notice a lot of noise coming up through the bottom. It is not too loud, but I would not be comfortable riding without ear buds or ear plugs.

The field of view is excellent with this helmet. Bell got this very right! It is listed as being glasses friendly, however I start to feel my glasses after about an hour. This could change as the helmet continues to break in, but I have been using it for probably 500 miles now, so I am not sure how much more it will break in.

The styling of the helmet is awesome. The vent latches are very positive feeling and you can easily manipulate them with gloves on. I kind of want to dislike the way the helmet does not have detentes to hold the visor open, but then again, you really do not need to open the visor due to the air flow. It is all the way open, all the way closed or just barely cracked. So, I think it is just a matter of getting used to the way the visor works as it is different than all the other helmets I have had. The magnetic helmet strap is very nice. You just would not think something small like this would matter but it really does.

I guess my one major complaint on this helmet is the visor.
I bought it for the auto tint visor and to have it be as bad as it is, that is really disappointing. Bell, please go back to the Transitions visor.

big in safety -- small in size
After wearing a 4.5 year old Bell Star I knew i wanted to get another one like it. My old one was an XL and I ordered the new MIPS model in Xl as well. The thing kills my ears and is hard to get on and off. They are working with me to get me slimmer cheek pads but say since i wore it, it is not returnable. Live and learn.

If MIPS really worked, why doesn't Bell use it in either of their race helmets, the Race Star and Pro Star? Seems bogus.
