Motorcyclists in self-isolation: A sampling from social media

Mar 23, 2020

If you're one of the pro Supercross riders with a 40-acre spread and your own practice track, maybe you can keep up with your training, go for a ride, have some fun and still easily maintain social distancing in the age of lockdowns, restrictions and cancellations. For the rest of us, whether you're a dad at home with the kids or a guy who has spent months building a motorcycle-powered portable toilet — yes, that's what I said — you may have to get more creative.

Here are some of the coping mechanisms riders are employing these days and sharing on social media. I'm sure there are even better ones I haven't seen, so share them in the comments.

A close and interesting Monster Energy Supercross season was interrupted midway. How to make the best of it? Ken Roczen posted a video by @extrememx on Instagram of his toddler enjoying a virtual lap with Roczen.

If you're FIM Trial World Champion Toni Bou, being stuck at home doesn't mean you can't get in some practice. He just incorporates it into his morning routine.

When the Flat Out Friday indoor flat-track race in Milwaukee was canceled, it was a real disappointment for Mike Casto, who had spent months building his entry for the goofball race: a motorcycle-powered portable toilet. Not to be denied, Casto took his invention for a night-time street run. While I can't speak to the street-legality of powered portable toilets under Wisconsin law, at least we know he was practicing social distancing inside his vehicle.

Some riders are going to lengths to keep motorcycles in their lives even if their lives are a lot more domestic than usual.

If you're spending more time by yourself, working on your motorcycles is always a way to stay productive, even in self-isolation. Roland Sands Design is encouraging you to unleash your creativity with its Instagram-based #coronavirusbikebuildoff.

#coronavirusbikebuildoff work in progress from @pilgrim_motorcycles - “Hi there, strange time has come, we were supposed to chenge a little bit in close future, re-set our main goals in company and start super cool project - and we are doing it but You know - this „unknown” feeling in Our minds is just there and make Us distracted. But fck it, we build and won’t stop, we also take the challenge made by @rolandsandsdesign 🤠 #coronavirusbikebuildoff sounds ridiculous, but hey - this whole shit is ridiculous so why not, it’s just coincidence because we started this cardboard project last monday, work is going pretty fast, most photos here are from the stories far from good resolution, watch our stories this week, we will be posting progress over there. The build is modified softail frame matched with 2012 sportster 1200 engine. By far aluminum wheel covers, aluminum body, and clip-on handlebars appeared. Lot of work ahead of us. Stay tuned 😷⚡️” #harleydavidson #bikebuild #caferacersofinstagram #pilgrims #pgm #customharley

Of course if you're a professional racer who has no way of knowing when the season will resume or start, you have to keep training, stay in shape and be ready. MotoGP's Fabio Quartararo demonstrated some of his training moves on Instagram, in case you're looking for something new for your home workout routine.

We'll finish up with some advice from Moto2 rider Sam Lowes, who has obviously been perfecting his indoor golf game and has some advice.
