REV'IT! Sand 3 Jacket

Bigger vents. Better armor. The Sand 3 Jacket builds upon the beloved Sand 2, adding even more value and improved features to the 4-season favorite.

Where 4 season garments typically make concessions is in the heat of summer riding conditions. The Sand 3 boasts vastly increased vent area from the Sand 2, with longer zippers exposing larger swaths of 3D mesh. The waterproof layer, like the thermal liner, is also completely removable, resulting in a lighter, more breathable standalone shell than other jackets with fixed, laminated membranes.

The REV’IT! Sand 3 uses a lightweight durable polyester ripstop main construction, now with a seamless armpit panel design, which ensures the highest comfort and freedom of movement - essential for adventure riding. The included shoulder and elbow armor is REV'IT!'s proprietary SeeFlex CE Level 2 breathable net. The Sand 3 can also accept a CE Level 2 SeeSoft back protector and pair with the Sand 2 Pants for complete Level 2 protection.

Taking into account the extreme use and abuse it is designed to withstand, REV'IT also prepared the Sand 3 for both the Leatt and Moveo neck brace, as well as the Challenger Cooling Vest and Hi-Viz Connector Vest.

Best of all, unlike some of the motorcycles and other gear in the Adventure market, the REV’IT! Sand 3 won’t require you to take out a second mortgage for the cost of admission. Save some coin and take an extra riding trip this year instead- after all, that’s what it’s all about.

Good jacket fell short
Bought this jacket to replace my old gear. Loved the idea of a four season setup. Took it out about 5 times. Twice I was in the rain and both times my forearms and left side chest got wet. Love the jacket but at 500, part of the purchase was staying dry. It didn't deliver. I know the waterproof liner was the shortcoming. Thinking about trying the jacket again but am apprehensive about getting another waterproof liner that leaks. Return to Revzilla was painless though.

a very good coat at a good price
I went with this jacket after alot of research for 2 reasons. 1st it has CE level 2 armor at the shoulders and elbows and is cheap to upgrade the back protector to level 2. The 2nd reason is that you can integrate the revit neck brace with it.

So far quality has been great. The fit is snug. I'm 5'11' and 250 lbs and the 2xl was snug on me with the liners in it but an acceptable fit. (the pants are another story. I couldn't get into the 2xl at all.

I have ridden in this down to 35 degrees and I was warm. At about 60 degrees I was too hot with the liners in but when I opened the vents it was fine.

Over all this a a great bang for the buck. You are at half the price of a klim badlands and you have alot of modularity with it.

Good construction, bad design.
This jacket looks great on paper. It hits all the major features.

However in practice it is quite a disaster.

Sizing: This jacket is not great for larger people. I tried it on in store first. I had to get a 3XL to get a comfortable fit around my chest. However this left me with extra length in the arms. I thought I could deal with it but it just sucks. I replaced the stock armor with Forcefield flexible armor and that helps with getting my arms in, but they can still be snug.

Wrist cuffs: The wrist cuffs are also way too small. With them adjusted all the way out they're snug on my wrists. It makes wearing a watch very uncomfortable.

Warmth: Overall it is colder than my Fly Terra Trek that I was hoping to replace. And the worst part is the arm pits... why are my pits so damn cold? And I wear a heated jacket underneath. The rain insert helps a bit with the wind, but overall this jacket is borderline too cold for the winter.

Storage: It would be nice to have a couple more small pockets. The pockets that are provided are all large, so anything you want to carry is hard to fish out when they're all co-habitating in the cavernous pockets.

Weather resistance: forget about it. This jacket lets water in at every zipper. And somehow funnels it all straight down my First Gear riding pants and straight down in to my gloves. Be prepared to be soaked even if prepared for the rain.

Overall this jacket is a disaster and I'm willing to take a loss on it to try and return it for any semblance of a refund.

Great for spring, winter and fall in Vegas,
I purchased the Sand 3 Jacket and pants basically for winter riding in Vegas. Since Vegas's winters are a bit milder then some states it works great. I'm not sure how practical they will be in the summer here when it's 100 plus degree's.

Nice allroung 3 season jacket
I have many jackets for the individual seasons. Wanted one jacket for the 3 riding seasons. Picked this one based on reviews and to date I like it. Honestly, have tested it in temperatures below 45. But it was warm and I wore it from early morning until dark. All my other jackets are size "L" , so I ordered the "L".... I only wore a sweatshirt on every ride so far, and the fit was fine. If you plan to wear several layers of shirts, it may get tight quick. I don't think you'll be disappointed if you decide on this jacket.

Ride with confidence. Even against the cold.
I just went on a long ride from Kentucky to California which lasted two weeks, before Thanksgiving. It being the time for winter to come through, I was in the market for gear. I wanted a jacket and pants combo that would carry me through the seasons, but especially stand up to the cold and rain, while offering a confidence inspiring level of protection. After shopping around and a lot of mulling over options, I chose the Sand 3 jacket and pants.

I'm glad I did. Though I planned the trip out best I could, it didn't stop Mother Nature from hitting the States with one of the largest cold fronts we've ever had. That being said, I went near the full scale on the thermostat with the temps I experienced. From 70°Fahrenheit to 29°Fahrenheit. For the most part, they were enough by themselves down to 48°. Beyond that, extra layers were needed. I also had a heated vest on so that helped as well. But the worst was the wind. If it weren't for the Sand 3 jacket and pants, the wind would've cut me apart. But they held it at bay, and cut down the chill at least by 40-50%.

I did run into some light rain, but not enough to really test their waterproof level. Still, they kept me dry. If I get the chance in the future to update on the waterproof level of the jacket and pants set, then I will do so.

3700 miles in southwest on naked BMW R1200R
I bought this over the Dainese Tempest only because the Dainese didn’t have white pants. I want visibility.

Worked great in temps from mid forties to high seventies in the same day. In morn I’d dress for coldest expected, then remove one layer if too warmp. Often adjusted zippered vents while driving 80mph. Took some practice.

Jacket with Levi’s saw 90s. I’m sure I could go well over 100 with all those zippers.

Only saw mid 40s, but I think 40 would have not been a problem. I might have had to use full zipper to the pants and/or down vest, and/or put the waterproof liner in, but T-shirt, sweater, thermal liner were fine down to mid 40s.

Pocket design is great. Easy to get in and out.

Adjusters around trunk and arms (3 pair plus waste) worked well. Thermal liners easy to deal with and worked well, once I figured out I didn’t need waterproof liner. Wrist and ankle Velcro pretty well sealed things up to keep wind out.

Sleeves were long. This is good because I often have a problem with short sleeves on medium size jackets. (5’9”, 160 lbs).

The pants snap took some getting used to and a whole bunch of broken fingernails.

Only thing I might change would be handles on zippers. I tied some string to them to make the easier to find at 80mph with gloved hands.

Best accessory was a neck protector that covered gap between helmet and jacket collar.

No rain experience.

Wow
Alhough I just received this jacket, I have to say how impressed I am. This is my 3rd Rev'It jacket.

Completed my first commute in it this morning. 35 degrees F and pitch black. 35 minutes wearing only this jacket and my button down work shirt underneath, and I was completely warm still upon arrival. The inner linings and ability to remove them give me confidence that this may be the only jacket I need going forward. Ventilation and technical features seem to be incredible and I can't wait to try it in more temperatures and weather conditions

Bizarre sizing vs the Sand 2
I rode with a Sand 2 jacket for nearly 4 years, so when I needed a new jacket the Sand 3 was the obvious choice. 3 months later, I'm mostly disappointed in the jacket and wish I had returned it. Both the sleeves and the overall length of the jacket are longer than the 2 and have left me in a position where the jacket just doesn't fit right. With the liners and back protector in, the chest and stomach area are snug and precisely how I want it to fit but the sleeves come down to the middle of my palm and the bottom is low enough that it bunches quite a bit while I'm on my bike (a 1290 Super Adventure, so it's not positioning). In the summer time, this wasn't as big of an issue since I wasn't wearing gauntlet gloves but now that I've switched to my winter gloves, the sleeves fold in on themselves. My first ride in a downpour (it was 3.5 hours) left me soaked even with the liner in, which definitely didn't happen with the 2.

On paper it's a significant improvement over it's predecessor but the reality for me is that I'll be switching back to the 2 and hopefully can sell this second hand to recoup some of the cost. If it fits you properly, I'm sure it's still a great jacket. I've never had a problem with other jackets or shirts, but this one just doesn't fit right.

Inspired Coalescence of Form, Function, and Utility
I very rarely have the opportunity to write the kind of review I'm about to write about the REV'IT Sand 3. But, the feeling I got when putting the jacket on for the first time was literally akin to picking up a hand crafted piece of Japanese steel, or sitting on my GS for the first time.

First, a little background; 6'1", 193 lbs, Coming off 7 years wearing my Olympia Moab High Viz Adventure Jacket, which served faithfully through 28+ seasons of every condition possible. While the jacket functioned, I wanted something with a better fit, increased functionality, more comfortable...

Let me just say that the Sand 3 not only met, but completely blew away my expectations for what my next Adventure jacket could be, at a price point that is absurdly more affordable than competitor's higher end jackets.

The competitors? The new Olympia Dakar 2 and Klim Badlands Pro. Before reading the reviews on Revzilla, I had honestly never considered REV'IT as a possible replacement. I assumed BMW would offer something ideal, but that it would be absurdly expensive. I figured Klim or Olympia would battle it out.

But, once I put it on, I was totally and completely blindsided by the quality of the Sand 3.

1. The build quality is spot on. No loose stitches. Fit and finish on par with something that costs twice as much.

2. The comfort was akin to a perfectly sized glove... But on my entire upper torso. This thing fits so incredibly well.

3. The design is nothing short of brilliant. Oversized pockets that close with a button in addition to velcro...and buttons all over the jacket to back up either velcro or zippers. The chest area has not just 1 but 2 separate straps (4 total) to adjust the chest size. REV'IT knew that riders would want to utilize all the liners included with the jacket, and unlike my old Olympia, which fit my midsection like I had never seen the inside of a gym and downed a 12 pack every day, the Sand 3's side straps allow for just enough tightening that the jacket fits and looks *just* as good without the liners as it does with them.

4. The combination of the design, the features, and the materials of the Sand 3 combine to deliver a jacket that is, for lack of a better word, perfect for what I'm looking for in an adventure jacket. It has enough room that I could include my own layers if I wanted to beef up the cold weather protection. But, the layers that REV'IT includes, instead of being an afterthought, are sized so well (My Olympia Moab was always too big in the chest, and not long enough in the arms...a really annoying combination!!), that I actually see myself using the jacket exactly as it comes, with almost no need to heavily modify with my own layers.

5. I put this jacket against the Klim Badlands Pro jacket...and it was almost embarrassing to compare the two. The Badlands Pro, don't get me wrong, seems like an amazingly constructed jacket. Protection is superb in it. But, it also weighs a ton, and was so uncomfortable when I put it on, that I was surprised that a jacket that would cost that much, could be so uncomfortable.

I know this is a long review. But, I don't have enough good words to say about this jacket. Whoever designed it did a fantastic job of knowing what adventure riders are really after with this type of jacket (modularity, modularity, modularity... and function, function, function)....they also happened to make it look absolutely slick in the process.

This jacket made the process of buying my next adventure jacket worth all the time and effort I spent researching, ordering, waiting, fitting, etc totally worth it. I couldn't ask for anything more than to be rewarded with the next 5-7 years of riding the "Swiss Army Knife" of motorcycles, wearing the "Swiss Army Knife" of adventure jackets.

P.S. - I will be pairing this jacket the the Helite Turtle Airbag Vest, so the lack of included back protection is no problem, and I can say firsthand, that a size Large Helite Vest fits like a glove over my size XL Sand 3. As far as sizing, I feel like the Sand 3 runs *slightly* small for what Americans are used to. You may want to run 1 size larger. I tried the Large but it was just too snug.

Happy Riding!!!!
