Good supplementary protection
These shorts are very comfortable and flow lots of air. The padding is in the right places. They don't inhibit your movement on the bike, I forget I'm wearing them. They fit true to size, I wear a 30X30 in Levis and weigh 145 lbs, the Medium fits well.

These are good for adding additional protection underneath motorcycle pants. I wear them under my Cortech Sequoia XC Air pants, the combination is a god-send for scorching Texas heat. I plan to wear these shorts when I go mountain biking as well, they seem perfect for it.

If your going to do track time I would opt for something like the Forcefield action sports, but for street riding these are perfect.

not for hard enduro
I am leaving neutral review because those shorts are not for me, but are probably perfect for many other people. we ride hard enduro, lots of rocks. my concern is that there is simply not enough padding to protect from even small injury if landing on small sharp edged rock. I think I prefer protection of thicker/harder armor for my use case. however, those shorts are built nice, fit well and will likely offer decent protection for street or MX type guy where impact protection need is more general. Also, they way those fit me, the point of my hip bone is not protected at all.

Just What I Needed for Summer Riding
I used my new Leatt GPX 5.5 AirFlex Impact Shorts for about 1800 kms (1100+ miles). They are extremely comfortable and they keep the perineum cool. However, I was wearing my open face helmet, mesh jacket, riding jeans, lighter boots and perforated gloves. I mean, the feeling of security they inspire is on par with lightweight hot weather garments. I am neither qualified nor willing to evaluate the level of protection they offer –God forbid- but since they are CE Level 1 certified, they must be matching my summer riding outfit in terms of protection. Furthermore, their upper hip protectors make me feel substantially more secure than I would otherwise feel, even if these protruding pads are rather thin. After all, some pad on the iliac bone should be better than no pad at all.

I had used Dainese Hard Shorts E1 for their mesh frame during two summers. They flow a ton of air but they are so bulky and so restrictive (in terms of my movements) that I had kept looking for alternatives. With them, I was looking like the Michelin Man in jeans. The Leatt GPX 5.5 AirFlex Impact Shorts are just what I have been looking for summer riding. My regular jeans size is 38W36 and Leatt’s 2XL fits me snugly. The leg cuffs are a bit too tight for me but this may be necessary for preventing the rotation of the thigh protectors. My belt also helps in keeping the shorts firmly in place, thanks to the protruding upper hip pads.

I no longer have to wear oversized riding jeans. Yet, I still get CE Level 1 hip protection, along with thigh, tailbone and pelvis (iliac bone) coverage. Nonetheless, I will keep wearing my Forcefield Action Shorts under my roomier/bulkier riding pants, as long as the sun is not coercive enough to shift to riding jeans.

The product info page reads “removable CE impact protection” but I have to disagree. The upper hip and thigh protectors are in double stitched pockets with no opening at all. The tailbone protector is in a double stitched pocket which leaves such a small opening that I wonder if someone can remove the pad without tearing the –thin- fabric. The hip protectors are gummed/adhered to the fabric.

Washing instructions call for cold washing and drying in shade. Everything else is nay, including tumble drying. I did not wash it yet but I think water will not harm the non-removable protectors. However, I don’t think that the pocketed protectors would air-dry overnight. If they were removable, as advertised; washing the shorts during a night stay in the course of a trip would be possible because the fabric is a fast drying material like the thin, moisture wicking summer riding base layer t-shirts.

I deduct one star for advertising permanently stitched protectors as removable. However, they still get five stars from me because they are so comfortable that they deserve six stars on a five star scale in the first place. I can highly recommend these shorts to those who would content with CE Level 1 protection (as opposed to CE Level 2) in favor of unparalleled comfort and ultimate off the bike convenience.

I would call them just base layer shorts, not "impact shorts"
If you're looking for decent hip and tail bone protection... I am not too convinced you will like this product. Although it's comfortable, I don't see how it could offer any added protection. It may be good for you if your riding pants already have hip protection and you're looking for just a base layer for comfort. Sizing is pretty spot on, I have a 32" waist, size medium fits perfectly.

I would like additional CE armor under my textile riding pants without adding too much bulk and the padding on these is claimed to be CE Approved but only 6mm thick. I also like the mesh panels, its hot and humid here in Texas in the summer.
Allan P on Aug 9, 2016
Seemed like a good alternative to the Forcefield Action Shorts since the armor is thinner.

Is the padding similar to D30 or SAS? Or is it the standard foam pads

can i wear this as my base layer alone? or is it made for over undergarment?

BEST ANSWER: It's a perfect base layer if that's what you're looking for it, but I'd personally wear them over undergarment
