Icon Raiden UX Jacket

In the online nerd world, UX means user experience, something RevZilla loves to make better every chance we get and apparently Icon feels the same way. The Icon Raiden UX Jacket takes rider experience to a new level by combining everyone's favorite garment (the hoody) with ADV functionality to blast off to new heights of riding comfort. The UX is constructed with a 4-way stretch HYCOR waterproof/breathable chassis. Completely seam sealed, it provides an all-conditions envelope for dual-sport riders. The athletic fit provides mobility, durability, and a new paradigm in the ADV scene. A quilted removable liner has mesh panels located just behind mechanical vents for air movement. Removable hood protects from the rain and unfortunate helmet hair, while a full D3O impact protector package does the dirty work.

Features:

  • ICON relaxed fit
  • 4-way stretch HycorTM membrane
  • D3O Impact Protectors - shoulders, elbows and back
  • Removable insulated Satincore Liner
  • Sublimated chassis
  • Reflective accents
  • Three position elbow protector pockets
  • Fully taped seams
  • Removable hood
  • Internal zippered cargo pockets

Awesome All-Purpose Jacket
They sell this as a year-round jacket and I was skeptical about being able to hold up in cold and hot conditions. My typical commute to work is 40-60 degrees in the mornings, the jacket holds up extremely well thanks to the removable liner. The outer windbreaker material takes away the icy morning gusts that cut through my usual jacket. On my way home, 70-90+ degrees in the afternoon, with the liner removed and the vents opened, it actually keeps me cool.

The only downside is that once I'm off the freeway the jacket gets pretty hot. It really only is able to keep me cool going faster than 30 MPH. Definitely would not recommend as a summer jacket.

The armor is a lot lighter than ICON's older models, which is a plus. With the looser fit style of the jacket, you can't even notice that it has impact armor.

Lots of pockets and other features as well. The casual look of the jacket is a plus so I'm not walking around in a "motorcycle jacket" while I'm off the bike. It's a little pricey but it's worth it. Highly recommend!!!

Great design, poor manufacturing execution
I like the design but as the title states, poor execution on the manufacturing of this jacket, at least the one I received. My initial order was for the Raiden DKR in “Glory” colors but I couldn’t get over the dang monkey paw. I thought I could live with it even though Anthony’s review warned of the monkey paw, but after slipping the jacket on…that’s negative for me. Thanks to Revzilla’s excellent return policy, I returned the DKR jacket and ordered the Raiden UX.

UX Pros:

- Overall Design
- Fitment
- Lightweight
- Armor

UX Cons:

Front Zipper - Based on Anthony’s review and watching the review several more times after receiving the jacket, the front zipper is not what I expected. I expected the front zipper to be the same as the vent and pocket zippers which appears to be YKK AquaGuard zippers, which would make it more water resistance. As a matter of fact, that is what it shown on the ICON Website. My biggest issues with the installed front zipper that are on this particular jacket is the potential of scratching the tank. I decided it was an acceptable risk because I liked the overall design and fitment of the jacket before the craftsmanship issues I noted below.

Taped Seams – In comparison to my Sitka hunting gear where the taped seams are actually visible, looking through the mesh liner it doesn’t appear to exist in the UX jacket unless there is a new definition for taped seams.

Craftsmanship - Ok, so I know China’s craftsmanship isn’t the greatest and I took a chance on the fact that ICON is trying to maximize their dollar but dang, they need to pick a better supplier. Imagine if you will, I’m sitting in the office and a colleague stops by to chat and as he is also a rider, he comments on the new Raiden UX jacket. I proceed to laud over the jacket until I see the stitching on the left forearm already coming apart at the seams… 4 days of commuting and it’s already falling apart at the seams?! Imagine my colleagues’ surprised look as I start dropping some unsavory verbal bombs. Anyhow, the moment I got home, I fully inspected the jacket… yeah, it’s not worth $360… $200, maybe.

Overall, I would recommend it to my worst enemy. I wouldn’t recommend it to my friends. I have no choice but to keep this jacket due to Revzilla’s policy, (paraphrasing) “if you use it once, it’s yours…” oh well. I must note that this review is not given against Revzilla as they have no control on the manufacture of the articles they carry, it’s against ICON.

Great Touring Jacket
Just got back from a 3600mi vacation, and the Raiden UX handled everything with ease! Cool 50deg mornings were comfortable with the excellent lining in, and hot days over 90 were fine with the lining out and the vents open. The D30 armor in the elbows, shoulders, and back provide protection, and the light flexible fabric make the jacket comfortable on long days. This is a serious motorcycle jacket. The fit feels awkward while standing in front of a mirror (as it should), but makes perfect sense sitting on the bike. Along with being a great 3 season jacket, its also waterproof when things get wet...Quality construction, terrific performance, and a good price. If you only want to pack one jacket for a trip, this is it!

Style and function but still not for hot weather
I've always been a sucker for Icon Raiden's style and I hate looking like every other Starbucks rider. I've noticed Icon Raiden's function has been improving with each iteration (Patrol, DKR, UX).

I really like the lighter weight and fit of this jacket. I live in SoCal and no jacket has been truly great in the hot temps but I would have maybe gone with two front vents and two rear vertical rather than the two side and rear horizontal vents.

This jacket rocks in the cooler temps though. I have not had a chance to test it in the rain (SoCal) yet.

The hood isn't really something I find useful except for off the bike around the campsite and I've left it off.

Fantastic quality still.

Winter Came Early
The Raiden UX jacket was delivered to my home while I was on a business trip. I was quite excited, so the day I got home I tried them (I also bought the pants) on and they fit very well! With too much jet-lag I decided to wait until the next day to go for a ride and test them out. And overnight we got 4 inches of snow. I'm still waiting for dry pavement to give a thorough test. But they are quite comfy, movement is good and it looks great! A solid set for sure.

Cool but the hood is flawed
Once I saw this jacket, I thought it must have been the coolest one I had ever seen. It looks like the Merc jacket, but it had a better appearance in my opinion and it was rain proof. Although the price is freaking insane, I decided to suck it up and buy the jacket anyways. I LOVE the hi-viz option, but I didn't want to go too flashy first, so I decided to go with the gray/black version first to see how I liked it. If it fit and worked well, I would have purchased another one.

At the beginning, I ordered the Merc jacket too just to compare the two, but I ended up returning the Merc jacket later. I bought both of them in a medium, and the Raiden UX jacket definitely fits looser, but that was what I wanted. The sleeves on the Merc definitely hugged my arm more securely.

I rode the Raiden UX through 3-4 days of rain on my trip from South Florida to Tampa and back during the summer, and it kept my body dry. (If you read on, this trip was done between the time of the hood coming off the first and second time. In short, I went on this trip without a hood.)

However, here's the biggest flaw in the Raiden UX jacket. If you don't know by now, the hood is removable. Well, if you ride too quickly, the zipper will get caught by the wind and will fly off. The first time I rode with the jacket, I was going around 140 mph. Call me stupid, but I did not expect it to happen. The hood had flown off by the time I had stopped at my destination. I called Revzilla, and they were nice enough to send me an extra hood for free.

Ever since then, I would only ride with this jacket if I wasn't riding on the highway. Well, a few months later, on a potential rainy day, I decided to wear this jacket again and ride on the highway. Since at the time, I didn't know how fast I could go with the hood on without it coming off. I kept checking the zipper with my hand every time I rode faster. Once I got to around 80-90 mph and checked my zipper again, I noticed that it was already half way off and flapping in the wind. Luckily I was able to grab it before it completely came off, and I ended up putting it in my left hand while still holding onto the handlebar. Yes, I know it was it was dangerous to do that on the highway, but I didn't want to lose another hood!

Icon needs make some type of cover/protection/locking mechanism over where the zipper ends to prevent it from coming off again. For $360, I do not think it is worth it. I personally think it is still the coolest jacket, but for that price, they need to fix that zipper!
