In what could be a big leap forward for electric two-wheelers, the company that sells more motorcycles in the world than anyone has teamed up with the company that has implemented a successful battery-swapping system in Taiwan.
The partnership between Indian manufacturer Hero Motocorp and battery-swapping network company Gogoro has a lot of potential. Hero is number one in unit sales of motorcycles and India is a huge market. Hero will build bikes and Gogoro will bring its system of swappable batteries to the partnership. As we've noted before, swappable batteries is one way to address issues of the limited range of electric two-wheelers and works especially well in urban areas, such as Gogoro's home base of Taiwan, where many riders may not have an easy way to recharge at home.
India's reliance on small motorcycles for transportation and its serious problem with air pollution in some cities means there's a lot of room for growth for electric vehicles — assuming, of course, the energy infrastructure to support it can grow along with it.
"We are at a critical stage in the transformation of urban mobility and the evolution of smart cities. With more than 225 million gas-powered two wheel vehicles in India, the need for smart and sustainable electric transportation and refueling is vital," said Horace Luke, founder, and CEO, Gogoro Inc. "The Hero-Gogoro partnership addresses these challenges."
Hero sells motorcycles not just in India but also in more than 40 other countries around the world, opening the possibility of electric motorcycles with swappable batteries being extended around the world. This partnership between two companies that are little known in the United States is one that's worth watching from a global perspective.
