We’ve had Honda’s CRF1000L Africa Twin here in the ZLA motor pool for a while now, and it’s proven to be a very capable machine. Honda’s big ADV bike delivers a nice balance of power and grunt. It’s totally unfazed by road trips, and it’s got quite a reputation in the dirt, too.
Adventurous as they are, most AT owners will not be taking their rides to a track day. An ADV bike couldn’t be more different from the average supersport. How can a tall, hefty, long-travel twin fit in on a circuit?
By going flat-out in the hands of a skilled rider, that’s how. Billy Burke of Nürburgring Biker Blog hustled his stock 2017 Africa Twin around the ‘Ring in an astonishing 8:38 BTG, which is about a minute and a half off the all-time BTG record for motorcycles. (BTG denotes “bridge to gantry,” which is the section of the Nürburgring open on public days.) In another video, he gets down to just 8:35. Not bad at all for a giant dirt bike.
Again, that’s a bone-stock AT, down to the Dunlop D610 Trail Max tires! Billy says he’s going to Avon Road Riders once the Dunlops wear out, which should be any day now if he keeps posting laps like that.
You’ve probably heard that your bike is more capable than you might think. I’d say this video proves it.
