Triumph introduces certified pre-owned option in U.S. after success in Europe

Dec 08, 2020

Certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicles are an increasingly popular option in the automotive world, and for many buyers, they make plenty of sense. These used cars offer relatively low mileage, extended warranties, complete service histories, and other incentives in exchange for generally higher prices than you’ll find in the non-CPO used car market.

In exchange for paying more, customers have greater confidence when buying late-model cars on a budget. The programs also benefit dealers, who can incentivize sales of leased vehicles and low-mileage trade-ins while growing their margins. Almost every auto brand offers a CPO program today.

The same can not be said for motorcycling, where CPOs are sometimes offered by individual dealerships, but not by the OEMs themselves. Harley-Davidson came close with their Reman program, later called LongBlock, which offered complete rebuilds with warranties, even for customers who selected H-D-approved upgrade parts during the rebuild. Still, that’s a long way from the automotive world’s standard.

The motorcycle industry may be ripe for a CPO revolution, because these programs depend on a steady supply of low-mileage, late-model vehicles and a healthy demand in the used market. Triumph spotted this opportunity and tried a CPO program in Europe, and now they’re bringing it to the United States.

“We are proud to offer a Certified Pre-Owned program, ensuring that customers joining the Triumph family with a pre-owned motorcycle are given the same great product experience and factory-backed assurances as someone buying a brand-new Triumph,” said Rod Lopusnak, Triumph North America's General Manager. “The program also offers a great benefit to new bike buyers, by protecting the residual value of their brand-new Triumph when they’re ready to sell or trade-in for a new bike. And for our dealers, they’re now able to list their Certified Pre-Owned motorcycle inventory on our new website for national visibility.”

Triumph’s CPO bikes come with a full service history, a “quality check and technical inspection,” plus verification of the bike’s mileage and history. Triumph’s CPO program adds a one-year (unlimited mileage) warranty and one year of roadside assistance coverage. Finally, financing is available on CPO models.

CPO programs for cars thrive on leases and low-mileage trade-ins. While Triumph does not offer a lease program in the United States, they do have “Triumph Triple Financing,” which gives customers with 36 months of payments on their Modern Classics three options:

  • “Trade-in and upgrade to the latest and greatest Triumph”
  • Pay off the remaining balance in one lump some to own the bike
  • Refinance the remainder through their bank of choice

CPO inventory is controlled by several eligibility requirements, including a max age of five years, a max mileage of 25,000, and an accident-free history. No race bikes allowed. Triumph accessory parts are allowed, but no other modifications are permitted for entry into the CPO inventory.

Expect the program to be popular with new riders shopping for a first bike, existing Triumph customers looking to step up to a premium model without blowing their budget, and people who already prefer buying CPO cars. Browse Triumph’s national CPO selection here.
