Supercross racing will return with seven more races to complete the season, though all will take place in one building: Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.
Feld Entertainment, the organizer of the Monster Energy AMA Supercross championship announced today that the series will resume on May 31 and finish on June 21, with races being held on Sundays and Wednesdays with no fans present and a limited number of racers and crews. The top 40 riders in points in each class will be allowed to enter. The races will be televised on NBC and NBCSN, in addition to being streamed live to subscribers of the NBC Sports Gold Supercross Pass.
By running a full season of 17 races, the series can crown champions in all three classes without adding too many asterisks to the record books.
"It is the hope of the series that the final seven races will start to bring some normalcy to race fans by creating memorable experiences through the live television broadcast that continue to bring people together via a shared experience while also uplifting the human spirit, as all forms of sport do," said the statement from Feld.
The last round of the series that took place was the Daytona Supercross on March 7, just days before everything started shutting down. While the Supercross race took place during Daytona Bike Week, the Daytona 200 scheduled for the following weekend was postponed until the fall.
2020 Monster Energy Supercross 450SX standings | |

In the 450SX class, the pandemic interrupted a close and exciting race for the championship between Monster Energy Kawasaki's Eli Tomac and Team Honda HRC's Ken Roczen — with Red Bull KTM Factory Racing's Cooper Webb, the defending champion, making a gritty comeback from injury to add another dimension to the story. Tomac won Daytona with Roczen finishing second, and that three-point difference in the race is also the difference in the season standings.
In 250SX East, defending champion Chase Sexton of the GEICO Honda team leads Shane McElrath of the Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM team by 10 points. In 250SX West, Dylan Ferrandis of the Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha team leads his teammate Justin Cooper by seven points.
The statement said a variety of measures will be taken to ensure the safety of the participants and staff involved in the racing: "Mitigation efforts include mandated prescreening, testing, temperature checks, face masks, increased sanitation efforts and social distancing to limit contact among individuals executing the events."
The plan to resume Supercross racing — the most popular form of professional motorcycle racing in the United States among spectators — closely follows the announcement Wednesday by MotoAmerica that it plans to resume the premier national roadracing series the same weekend, May 28 through 31, at Road America, putting on a race without fans. MotoAmerica plans a second race at Road America a month later that will be open to fans.
