The 2022 Progressive IMS Outdoors motorcycle shows have been canceled with no plans to resume the events, organizers announced today.
The news was announced on the IMS social media channels and via a brief news release. People who already bought tickets to an event should receive a refund in the next seven days.
Organizers had planned to hold eight events this year, from June to November and from Long Island, New York, to Southern California. The IMS Outdoors shows were a revamp of the previous IMS events, shifting from off-season indoors static displays to outdoors events that featured demo rides and other activities. That was partly a response to the pandemic, but it was also a response to the evolving ways manufacturers were choosing to present new models to the public. Some manufacturers had already begun scaling back their participation in both national shows and the big international events, such as EICMA and INTERMOT.
With manufacturers turning to virtual presentations in a world that still has to deal with a pandemic, consumer shows may not make sense anymore. But consumers can't test ride a motorcycle virtually. Rethinking the future of motorcycle shows is probably overdue, but let's hope the manufacturers step up their demo ride programs to fill the void as IMS Outdoors disappears.
