Highside/Lowside podcast: How modern are those vintage-style new motorcycles?

Mar 04, 2024

The trend of motorcycle manufacturers building new, modern bikes with vintage looks is definitely not new. It's been going on so long now that some of the early examples are getting close to genuine vintage status themselves.

If you really want to go further back and get a running start at the topic, there's the 1989 Honda GB500, a motorcycle styled to look like a British single-cylinder motorcycle from the 1950s or 1960s. It didn't catch on, however, and was quickly discontinued in the U.S. market, which is why it came up in the previous episode of Highside/Lowside. But the trend really took root and found success when Triumph revived the Bonneville name in 2001 with a classically styled twin that paid tribute to the original Bonnevilles from decades earlier.

RevZilla's own Ari Henning joins Spurgeon and Zack for this episode to discuss modern bikes with throwback looks. There are plenty of entries from Triumph, but they also discuss offerings from other manufacturers, from pricier options like BMW's R nineT line to affordable retros such as Honda's Monkey, Super Cub, and Trail 125. And then there are companies like Royal Enfield and Ural that didn't have to go back and create a replica of something from the past because they never stopped building motorcycles in that style.

Join Zack, Spurgeon, and Ari for a look at modern classics, as well as the "Not the news" segment, the motorcycle sound guessing game, and more.
