Sena 30K Bluetooth Headset
Sena 30K Bluetooth Headset
The Sena 30K is not simply a Bluetooth headset, it is an adaptive-mesh communicator: the future of wireless communication. The 30K operates on Sena’s Mesh Intercom technology, a 2.4 GHz frequency, connecting to other riders in an entirely new way. Group connectivity is made simple with the 30K. Should one of the group’s riders go out of range, the Mesh Intercom intelligently keeps the rest of the group in seamless communication, while actively searching to reconnect, should that rider come back within range. Never again will you have to stop and reconnect, or worry about dropping connections from overly-complicated daisy-chain group pairings.
Utilizing two antennae and two separate and dedicated processors, the Sena 30K is both a 4.1 Bluetooth headset and an Adaptive Mesh-Networking device, the two working simultaneously in concert within one low-profile unit to accomplish all your communication and entertainment needs. Sena 30K Audio Multitasking technology allows you to have a conversation via Adaptive Mesh-Networking technology while simultaneously enjoying Bluetooth operations such as streaming smartphone music, taking or making phone calls, or listening to turn-by-turn GPS navigation, so there is no clunky navigation between devices or channels or frustrating re-pairing of devices. Promising the smoothest, most uninterrupted listening experience ever, the Sena 30K is a huge technological leap forward - simplicity through sophistication, so you can focus on the important part: enjoying the ride.
Using the private group mode, the 30K can pair in full duplex communication with up to 16 riders at a range up of to 1.2 miles, while an endless amount of additional Guest users can tune in for listening only. When riding with 5 or more riders, the Mesh Intercom is capable of keeping the group connected at a range of up to 5 miles. Although Mesh Intercom is the next big thing, you won't leave your Bluetooth buddies in the dust either. The 30K is still capable of pairing with up to 3 other Sena or non-Sena Bluetooth communicators at a range of up to 1 mile, depending on the range of your riding buddies' headsets. Using Sena's RideConnected Mobile App, the 30K is also able to connect with riders anywhere in the world via your mobile network.

Reviews & Questions
Other than this issue which was very disappointing in our particular case the rest of the communicator seems to work very well. The ability to simply to turn on your mesh intercom with one push of a button and have it automatically connect to any other mesh intercom users is certainly very easy - sure beats the old "pairing" system required with the older Bluetooth intercom models. I noticed that when my Mesh Intercom was on I would get random "Beep" noises at unpredictable intervals throughout the ride. I'm not sure what this was about but it was annoying and I could not relate it to any circumstance such as my partners riding distance or if she had her mesh intercom on or off. I also felt that the amount of background noise heard with the Mesh Intercom was a bit higher than the older Bluetooth models.
I have not tried the voice control features or radio yet.
Overall this product works well... just as the older Bluetooth Sena systems do. However, other than the ability to automatically pair the intercoms with the push of just one button I see no other great benefits of switching to the Sena 30K.
In my particular case had I known that the simultaneous music/intercom ability was not really there in reality I would have just staid with my good old reliable Sena SHM-10 and saved my money. I'm was so good at pairing the SHM-10 by now that it was almost as easy as the 30K. However, if you don't already have a Sena intercom there is no reason not to buy the 30K as it does everything the old Sena systems do plus the intercoms pair much more easily.
One thing I noticed right off the bat was that the 30K takes a little bit longer to turn on and connect to your phone.
Another thing that has bothered me quite a bit about the 30K is how you cannot listen to music while using the bluetooth intercom. The only way to listen to music while talking to someone is by using the new mesh intercom feature. For some reason, the Mesh intercom silences my music every few seconds, making it impossible to listen to music while it's on.
The speakers on the 30K are only slightly better than those on the 20S. It gets to about the same volume, but the 30K speakers are slightly clearer.
The style of the 30K is a lot nicer than that of the 20S, but it's not a deal breaker.
In my opinion, I think it's best to stick with the 20S for now, until the issues with the 30K have been worked out.
I've been a Sena 20s user for about 4 years now. Was excited to try the new 30k.
Have to say - pretty disappointed so far. It doesn't seem to be much better than the 20s - no new features beyond the "mesh intercom" stuff, which at the moment - I'm not using. I'd hoped for better Bluetooth range/cleaner signal between phone/headset - but it's no different.. If I have the phone in a thigh pocket on right side of body, and 30k/20s on the left side of helmet, it regularly drops out. If I put it in a left chest pocket, then it's usually pretty stable.
It also seems to be a LOT more sensitive and frustrating to use for "tap", "1 sec hold", "5 sec hold" modes than the 20s - way way way more sensitive and inconsistent.
Pairing it with a 20s a couple of other 20s units was a pain in the ass. The user guide documentation is wrong ... and the procedure doesn't work 9 out of 10 times. It took forever to get 2 other 20s units paired with the 30k. DEFINITELY don't do this standing in the sun with full riding leathers on trying to get paired before a ride !!
I do have to say - that what the 30k does - it does well - but those are the things the 20s does well, too. Sound clarity is good, features are pretty good - though requiring a new mobile App for the 30k is annoying. Audio pick-up on the microphone is extremely clear.
Audio multitasking works perfectly (Ahem .... "John M") ...

The installation was fairly straight forward and easy. The hardest part was figuring out how to take apart my helmet and getting it all back together. I installed the 30k on my HJC RPHA ST Zaytun Helmet with very few issues. I opted to use the boom mic in hopes of a clearer connection. The boom mic fits perfectly between the cheek pads and the chin guard. I love that I don't have to sacrifice the chin guard in cooler weather riding.
It's a snug fit to get the top module mounted into the base unit with the standard clamp installation. This may be remedied with some spacers, but I opted to leave it as is for now.
I love the voice activated features. I can use the speed dial and call up to 3 people without taking my hands off the bike. I also love that I can turn the FM radio on/off with just voice controls.
I have yet to find others to test the unit with as I ride solo most the time. I'm looking forward to a group ride and testing the rest of it's capabilities later.
The phone app is a nice feature to configure the unit as you wish without trying to figure out how to navigate all the menus with the jog dial and buttons on the unit itself.
I'm still learning what all this can do but so far I have no regrets.
My only problem is that my helmet no longer fits in my rigid side bag with the added dimensions of the Sena 30k mounted on the side on my helmet. (I know, I know, 1st world problems...)

No multi-tasking (they say it will be in the next firmware update)
Witch means they put it for sale before they finish the product.
Q: Is the 30K water resistant, and if so, what spec?
A: Yes, the 30K is water resistant just like the other SENA headsets, but we don't have a specs yet.
