Badly Needs Software Update
As I write this review (mid Sept. 2017) the current software version for this com unit is still 1.0. It's absolutely horrible. I am eagerly awaiting a software update that will hopefully make this unit useable and not just a waste of money. I'm not one that has many problems with the things I buy, but this thing is a real mess.

I was SO looking forward to my new C4 helmet and SC1A, but after the disaster of trying to use this com unit over the past week, I'll be using my HJC helmet with it's Sena 10R unit for this weekends ride.

They say it's supposed to have the same speakers as the 10R, but it sounds thin and tinny, whereas the 10R has nice full bass. Then there's the garbled voice problem that users of the SC1 standard version have pointed out in their reviews. Mine is garbled with both the phone function and the intercom. And yesterday, when I tried to listen to music, even it was garbled. Ambient noise makes no difference, as I called my wife while sitting in the living room with my C4 on, and yep, still garbled. On several occasions, halfway through a call or com, it would magically clear up, but for the most part, I can count on everything sounding garbled.

Last weekend, my brother and I went on a short 120 mile ride. Four times the SC1 turned itself off for some unknown reason. No goodbye tone, just dead. Push both buttons to turn it on again and you're good, for a half hour anyway.

Perhaps the most frustrating part (aside from the poor performance versus cost) is the horrible com menu. It's a nightmare to just activate a conversation. The old 10R is brilliant, just tap the center button and you're talking with your buddy. But since the SC1 only has two buttons, you have to press, hold and tap your way through a com menu (which sometimes works and sometimes doesn't). By the time the conversation is finally initiated, what I was hoping to point out to my riding buddy was already a half mile in the rear view mirror (providing that the unit was still active and didn't turn itself off, in that case, you've got to turn the whole thing on again and then navigate through the com menu, by which time the point of interest is now a whole mile in the rear view mirror).

Schuberth and Sena are great companies, I can't believe that reps from both companies went for a ride with this thing and felt it was "good enough" to put out to market. I assume they actually ride motorcycles and actually use their own products? Maybe not. Sure feels like it was born in a boardroom but never went for a ride. Update or replacement please!

DO NOT BUY THE SC1 STANDARD OR ADVANCED!!
It has become apparent to me, that I have made a $1200 mistake with the Schuberth C4 and SC1A. I have been waiting for this helmet since March ’17 while receiving the SC1A as a partial shipment in the interim, and now upon finally receiving the helmet and after marrying the two together for the first time, I have come to realize I could and should have spent my money more wisely on something else.

After experimenting with all the other leading brands of comm systems through the years and then moving exclusively to Sena, I developed confidence in Sena as a developer of solid performance products that were out in front of their competition. I am sad to say, however, that is not the case with the SC1 and SC1 Advanced. The seamless integration into the helmet is great, but the performance of the SC1, to include shutting off when closing the chin guard, shutting down intermittently for no apparent reason, interfering with other Bluetooth pairings you have going on nearby, garbled outgoing audio during phone calls and/or intercom, lack of dynamic range with music audio just to name a few issues, represents an amateurish product release at best and a complete disaster at worst, and in my opinion has tarnished the reputation of a company known for producing leading edge products. But the real kicker in this whole disappointment and frustration scenario is that neither Sena nor Schuberth seem to be motivated to do anything about it. If they are, they are not being forthcoming about it nor offering viable solutions. Since negative reviews and inquiries from all over the world have been pouring in on both Sena’s and Schuberth’s tech help sections of their respective websites, the responses have gone from vanilla, “Thank you for contacting Sena/Schuberth tech help, we are sorry blah, blah, have you tried resetting to factory default settings?”, to “try yelling really loudly with the visor closed”, to “we’re in complete denial of any issues, so it must be your fault” type responses to lately not responding at all. And after several months in the marketplace, the firmware version is still sitting at v1.0. To say that I am disappointed and angry about having purchased the most expensive helmet/comm system combo in the world with this lackluster result would be an understatement.

My recommendation to anyone considering this product is to avoid it at all costs until when and if the substandard performance and shortcomings of the SC1 Standard and Advanced are addressed. Sena and Schuberth have apparently gone off the rails with this one, and until they get a fix in place the SC1 will continue to be source of irritation and disappointment to loyal customers not to mention scaring off potentially future ones. As a major supplier, Revzilla needs to apply serious pressure to both Sena and Schuberth to get this thing fixed.

Wait for firmware updates before buying this
I am having the same issues as Rod L described. Also, unit shuts off while in use and I have to remove and reinstall the battery to get it to restart. Obviously I cannot do this while riding. I am disappointed in Sena and Schuberth for releasing this without better QC and testing.

I did not purchase this from Revzilla because I had a coupon from another seller.

Worst product i have ever spent $1000+ for!
Schuberth C4 and SC1A are the worst combination of poor technology and poor testing being sold at a premium price. While i own many other Sena product I cant believe they put there name on this JUNK!

Everything written in these other reviews is correct. This thing glitches out and needs the battery removed to get restarted. It fails to work or charge every time i need it to work.

SENA PRIORITY ISSUE
Hello, I am the owner of a product SENA (the SC1 Advanced for Schuberth). I discovered, after purchase, that products SENA offering the RADIO did not allow to have the vocal instructions of the telephone by Bluetooth resulting from GPS application or other when you are using the RADIO FM. So, if the radio of the intercom is swithed on, you cannot have of road guide, informations of safety or informations resulting from your telephone by this way. The instructions are completely inaudible.

Thus SENA prioritized the radio with regard to the information of safety for the motorcyclist. In 100 additional euros to have this radio feature, I do not especially recommend you this product. You cannot use it when you would want to use the GPS guide from your smartphone.

You can note that others brands like N COM for example of whom I was the owner provide you perfectly a prioritization of the instructions from the telephone compared with the RADIO. The Radio cuts itself when the GPS application from your telephone guides you.

I asked SENA to plan an evolution and shall hold you informed if it was the case. In the meantime, if buy you SENA, make it with full knowledge of the facts !

fyi update v1.1 is out
I don't have any issue with it. However I only use to listen to music or podcast. On occasion I have to call the mrs, however that's not a problem. I'm probably a poor test subject however it works just fine for me. One caveat, I also bout the remote. So mush nicer to control via your thumb while your hand is still on the bike

Works flawlessly
I am very happy with my purchase of the SC1 Advance. It is a huge improvement over the SRC that I had in my C3 helmet. It is great not having to deal with the boom mic. The buttons are much easier to use. Scrolling through the features is easier and more intuitive. The sound quality has met or exceeded my expectations. I have no issues with connectivity or dropping the signal or connections. I paired my BMW Nav VI to the SC1 and paired my iPhone to the Nav VI instead of pairing the phone and Nav VI to the SC1. This set up has worked great. I am glad that I did not let the negative reviews -- which caused me to think long and hard before making this investment -- to deter my purchase.

Excellent communication and built in
Two minute install, inconspicuous with no fiddling around to fit. Works right out of the box. Easy to use or at least better than the unit for the original c3 & c3 pro.
Charges up quickly. If you purchase it, be sure to download the complete manual; the little fast guide is not that great to read.

May work for someone, but not for me
I did some research on positive feedback's on SC1A (was not that hard, because there are less than a dozen of them in whole internet) and found a pretty clean pattern. Here's my observation. Whoever likes SC1, are:

1. Using it only with one device connected to the headset. If they have multiple BT devices, they use some other device as a hub (Zumo 590, etc.). That eliminates SC1 priority and device's switching issues. But, then, any cheap BT headset (like the one for $50) will do the job.
2. Not using intercom functionality. Otherwise, they would notice a poor VOX functionality and horrible inconvenience of using tiny buttons of SC1 (which you must hold down for several seconds) in order to initiate intercom connection. BTW, #1 issue also applies here
3. Mostly riding big bikes with large windshields that minimizes wind noise. The audio volume of SC1 (especially via A2DP connection) is unacceptably low and makes it impossible to listen to music on any speed over 50 km. I adjusted the position of speakers properly and even put thicker pads under the speakers to move them closer to ears, but it did not help much. 2 things make this matter even worse: a) there is no provision for using earbuds; b) Smart Volume Control function DOES NOT WORK AT ALL!!!

Now, in my case:
1. I must have at least 3 active BT connections to SC1: a) cellphone; b) GPS; 3) Intercom (one or two other riders). You could only imagine how badly SC1 works with multiple BT connections!!!
2. As VOX function does not work as it should, I'm forced to use buttons to initialize an intercom connection. Unfortunately, I feel it's very unsafe to remove a hand from a handlebar for such a long time (keeping tiny button pressed for several seconds) just to initiate an intercom connection. I can't use a remote controller either, because it takes a lot of space on a grip and makes reaching out to bike's control buttons very inconvenient.
3. I'm riding a naked bike. There is a lot of wind noise on speed and I wear earplugs all the time. The fact that Smart Volume Control function does not work, makes it impossible to listen to music because of a very low audio volume. I hoped Sena would fix it with the new (v1.1) firmware, but they didn't. I can't wait another year or so for a next firmware update in hope Sena will finally make Smart Volume Control work.

My problem is:
1. I really like C4 helmet, it fits me perfectly and I'd like to keep it
2. I must have Sena BT headset, because all my rider buddies are using Sena and BT intercom between different manufactures (universal intercom) has a lot of limitations and very short distance
3. I can't use SC1, because it's simply a CRAP.

My solution:
1. Remove SC1 completely
2. Unsolder built-in speakers. Fortunately, it's very easy and can always be reverted.
3. Buy a new Sena 20S clam kit and install it on C4
4. Use 20S (which I already own)

My suggestion:
Buy SC1 only if you expect to:
1. Connect one and ONLY one BT device to SC1
2. Do not use intercom
3. Has a bike with EXCELLENT wind protection (or don't rider faster then 50 km/h :-) )
4. Trust Sena to release a next firmware version soon with all bugs fixed

Otherwise, DON'T waste your money! Look for alternative solutions.

Not sure why you’re complaining!
So I read the NEGATIVE reviews on the SC1 Advanced but pulled the trigger anyway.
I have the new Schuberth C4 and wanted to be able to listen to music while out on my Harley.
While the SC1A doesn’t provide front row concert level clarity it is MORE than enough to allow me to enjoy my tunes.
I ride a performance built HD ElectraGlide with what most would call a loud 2-1 exhaust.
I can hear the music JUST fine under all riding situations other than full out highway blasting in WINDY conditions.
I’m not bitching because prior to this I couldn’t hear my fairing installed stereo at all at highway speeds.
Today I received a pleasant surprise while listening to tunes on the way home.
My cellphone rang.
A quick press of the button allowed me to take a call from a Brother with clarity and connectivity BEYOND the quality I was expecting, all at 85+ mph.
Buy the SC1A if you’re not expecting CONE OF SILENCE clarity under all riding conditions.
DO BUY IT if you want to hear your music, take incoming calls and it all comes in a very nice inconspicuous sleek package and without looking like a tumor protruding from the side of your dome.
The downside?
Paired with the C4 you’ll have a brain bucket pushing value in excess of $1000 so you’ll want to invest in some type of locking mechanism to protect your investment.
Leave this hanging on your throttle grip outside your favorite Biker Bar and you’ll wind up sad, broken hearted and without a helmet for your ride home.
