Schuberth E1 Crossfire Helmet

The Schuberth E1 Helmet offers adventure riders a premium modular helmet designed to perform when the ride leaves the pavement. The Schuberth design team developed the E1 in Schuberth’s proprietary aeroacoustics lab, resulting in a helmet optimized for both aerodynamic and aeroacoustic performance. Schuberth’s Anti-Roll-Off System keeps the helmet in place, while the removable and washable inner lining allows riders to keep their helmet clean in between adventures.

One of the most innovative features is the fully articulating peak visor, which can be adjusted to three different positions independently from the face shield and chin bar. The E1 can be worn with both the face shield and peak in place, or riders may opt to easily remove either piece for the ride. The E1 also features a closeable air vent in the chin bar to ensure that riders get enough air as the ride intensifies, while a removable and washable filter will help clean the air in dirty and dusty conditions.

The E1 includes a built-in antenna for Schuberth’s SRC-System PRO. Utilizing the latest in Cardo communication technology, the Bluetooth SRC-System serves as an intercom with other riders and can connect to a GPS unit, MP3 player or mobile phone for navigation, music listening or phone calls.

Features:

  • Interior liner has been designed with fewer seams and a more universal interior fit
  • Improved EPS with integrated antennas for SRC-System which improves radio and Bluetooth range
  • Micro-lock ratchet chin strap
  • Large reflective panels on neckroll
  • Improved face shield ratchet mechanism
  • Integrated sun visor

Outer Shell:

The outer shell is offered in two helmet shell sizes and combines an aerodynamically optimal shape with excellent protection. It is manufactured using Schuberth's typical compression molding process and thus permits great stability and a low weight.

  • Shell material: S.T.R.O.N.G. fiber
  • Helmet shell technology from SCHUBERTH permits low weight
  • Glass fiber with a special resin added is compressed in a vacuum at high pressure to form a helmet shell which is exceptionally sturdy
  • Perfected aerodynamics for higher speeds
  • Upward lift = 0!
  • Directionally stable
  • No oscillatory tendency
  • No buffeting
  • Spoiler integrated into the helmet shell

SRC-System Ready:

The E1 is equipped to accommodate the SCHUBERTH SRC-System (sold separately). To guarantee ideal radio reception, the E1 is already equipped with two integrated antennas to boost FM and Bluetooth reception.

  • Optimum reception at all times
  • FM and Bluetooth antennas integrated into the helmet for optimum reception

EPS:

The EPS foam liner is modular in design to ensure optimal shock absorption. This complex segmentation guarantees enhanced force absorption and distribution.

  • Made of specially optimized EPS foam
  • Complex multizone foaming allows optimal shock absorption

Inner Lining:

A special inner lining of the E1 was developed according to Schuberth's innovative Comfort Fit concept that ensures the helmet fits comfortably and securely in all situations. The combination of carefully selected COOLMAX and Thermocool materials, with the additional use of Interpower coatings, also make the inner lining a highly-effective moisture removal and cooling system.

  • COOLMAX pad system, completely removable and washable
  • Optimized fit
  • Variable venting for effective ventilation
  • Adjustable for summer/winter
  • Allergen-free
  • Antibacterial
  • Removable comfort cheek and head band pads

Ventilation:

Thanks to the design of the vents, the supply of fresh air is increased by up to 60%. The combination of multipath channels in the EPS foam liner and the head/chin/mouth ventilation ensures that fresh air is distributed effectively over the entire head area.

A.R.O.S. and Neck Strap:

The Anti-Roll-Off System (A.R.O.S.) was especially developed by SCHUBERTH as a safety feature and is incorporated into every SCHUBERTH motorcycle helmet. It ensures that the helmet cannot roll off of the head when the chinstrap is closed and correctly adjusted:

  • The helmet cannot pivot off the head from behind
  • The risk of contact between the chin section of the helmet and the chin or throat of the rider is minimized due to the small angle of tilt
  • Reduces the chance of the helmet coming into contact with the chest as the result of an accident
  • Precise setting of the chinstrap length through adjustment on both sides
  • Micro-lock ratchet lock

Face Shield:

The EasyChange visor mechanism makes changing visors extremely quick and simple without the use of tools.

  • City position offers maximum ventilation while traveling at slower speeds
  • Pinlock visor prevents shield from fogging

Safety Certification:

  • DOT (as of Spring 2018, Schuberth USA is no longer importing ECE rated E1 Helmets)
Shape: Intermediate Oval

Fits nice, looks great, quiet, but there are issues you wouldn't expect.
There's no denying this helmet looks great, fits very well to my head, is nicely balanced and light, and is one of the quietest helmets I've owned. But, I didn't expect the downfalls that came with this hefty price tag. The modular chin doesn't always slide into the guides, leaving a gap in the side of the helmet. When this happens, it's difficult to unlock the chin to lift back up and try again. It also takes effort to pull it down that I didn't expect. It's not a smooth action like others do. The buckle rides in your Adams apple, which can be painful. The visor buffets easily at 35 mph, but I read this before I bought it. I can ignore this but wondering if this will be more annoying at higher speeds over long distances. The sunshield inside doesn't drop down as low as I would prefer, like much less expensive brands do, but is effective. And lastly, being one of the most expensive helmets on the market, and how nearly all helmet locks available on most bikes, it's nearly impossible to lock this helmet to your bike. Hoping Schuberth takes these into consideration if they make an E2 model.

Nice, But not without gripes
Like many of the previous reviews, I found the chin strap to be a little uncomfortable. ( does sit on Adams apple if not rolling helmet forward for relief )
Honestly that & the Price are it's biggest gripes.
The Latching mechanism is a nice feature & can be used with gloves.
Helmet has many nice features & I found the airflow to be adequate. ( Read the instructions & open the 2 holes in the helmet shell under the lining )...
The Visor/Chin bar & Bill functions are perfect for me & my Missions as a Dual-Sport Helmet. It's a Real nice helmet to be thrashing around in the woods & such, But If ya got a $5 head, you can buy a cheap helmet!
Overall I Like it, Just don't cinch the hemet strap real tight & roll the helmet forward before cinching!

Not much bang for the buck even on sale
I have always wanted one of these and at $300 off decided to give it a try.

I never got to try them because the modular closing on the L was terrible. Maybe one out of three hard slams would get both sides to close. But most of the time it only closed one side and jammed like that. The neck roll opening is also tight. It is difficult to don but OK once I squeezed into it.

OK, so I had also ordered an XL because the L was a little too tight. I could barely get the XL on my head because the opening is so tight. WAY tighter than the L. There is something crazy with the neck roll and liner. It also has the same modular closing issue. This helmet was dated 2016.

For the two helmets I received the build quality wasn't even up to a $500 price point much less the normal $800 price.
Maybe they are good out on the road. But I just couldn't get past the lack of build quality for a helmet this expensive. I give it a two stars mainly due to very high price vs. mediocre to poor quality.

Average Helmet
I bought a large using the size chart NOT good. Returned it XL fit better but no way to test due no returns after removing any stickers. Second helmet received with damage but Schuberth sent me the replacement part and offered great service.

So now the review,
Upper chin vent is so noisy it is worse that my old helmet. Unable to ride without earplugs even a short ride to town. I also bought the Schuberth intercom for the helmet which is a Sena sc10u. PIA to install. I broke off one of the end pins from the neck roll that was no mentioned in the install video. Only 47 bucks to fix that - new neck roll. So intercom cannot be heard at any speed above 45 on my BMW pretty worthless for 270 bucks and you have to open the visor to answer the phone to press the + button. Intercom said to update firmware but has to be done using a computer and only from Schuberth site NOT Sena. Would not update from Windows 10 had to use my old Windows 7 computer. All updated ready to go now just can't heard it over 45 mph.

So my conclusion, save your money I found the snowmobile chin flap/seal for 8 bucks for my HJC helmet and using my UCLEAR intercom I now can listen to music and answer calls without opening my visor.

I did buy the remote control for the Schuberth intercom but if I can't hear it no need to control it just saves from opening the visor.

I do not know why Sena supports their other helmet products just not Schuberth.

Not sure if it is the peak on the Schuberth but be careful turning your head at highway speed to check for traffic because it will grab you better off just turning around on your seat.

A simple case of no recourse like it or live with it.

Good but not perfect.
I have only had the helmet a few days so keep that in mind. Initial impression was that it was too tight. After wearing it a while I think its snug but not to tight. They say it will break in over time.

The Good.: Very quiet for a modular. Excellent visibility. The drop down internal sunscreen works well and comes down far enough for me. Pinlock included and installed.

Not so good: Chin bar takes a little effort to latch. You need to make sure its clicked in as its a tight fit. This may break in over time. The Sun visor vibrates at speeds over 50MPH. Doesn't bother me a ton but it may some and of course it all depends what kind of wind protection your bike has. The locks that hold the sun visor from moving can be pain at times....Don't force them. The top air vent isn't the easiest to move, its stiff and difficult with gloves on. This may also free up in time with use.

The bad: Price: I would not pay retail for this helmet, personally I don't see its value at $800+ I purchased it on sale for under $600. Still a lot but close to its value.

The buckle can be annoying to some as other have stated. I found coming from a Nolan its about the same so it wasn't a big issue for me. I like the ratchet strap over the D-ring but it is bulkier and may rub on some people necks.

Conclusion: Overall I am happy with the helmet, its not perfect but is over all a good helmet. I plan to remove the sun visor when touring on the highway and snap it on for the back roads.

Good but not perfect
After riding Kabuto and L2 helmets, the E1 is my first "premium" lid. I had eyed it for a while and when it went on sale I bought one (still almost 600 bucks). Here are my impressions after a long weekend of mountain road riding:

The Good:
Fit and finish are solid as expected at that price. The materials all have a premium feel to it.
The chin-bar is easy to operate, even with gloves on. The face shield and the drop down sun visor are of great quality. Riding with the shield open in city or slow traffic is not problem and it stays put in any position. Overall vision is nearly perfect (without the beak).
Airflow is very good, which is surprising because there is no vent at the back.
I like the design and the yellow hi-viz elements contribute to safety.

The bad:
Noise level is the big disappointment. My hope of being able to eliminate earplugs were destroyed quickly. Knowing that component helmets are louder by nature, the E1 is still very noisy. Schuberth is big on aerodynamic but the E1 Designer must have been on vacation for that part. There is a lot of wind noise and it's even worse with the beak on ..
Speaking if the beak: I have mixed feelings about it and it is a good thing it comes on and off fairly easily; once you figured the right angle out aligning the locks. It does a great job blocking the sun and it did cut out the strobe effect in wooded mountain riding on a sunny day. It does stay in place in different positions and it is a nice feature that it pops back in position when opening and closing the chin-bar. Overall though it feels flimsy and I had expected a more solid material. It wiggles and makes a lot of noise once you go 60 mph in any position. I will keep it off and put it on on days when I need it. It fits nicely in my tank back and I'll just keep it with me while touring.

One irritating fact is that Schuberth helmets no longer come with ECE certification. I know they are among the safest helmets out there but having anything beside the DOT stamp gives me piece of mind. So I have an L2 Breaker for $150 bugs (a good helmet btw) with ECE stamp and a Schubert (original price $800) with DOT only. Just doesn't feel right. Bad decision on Schuberth's part.

In toto - I like it but am glad I didn't pay full price.

Good quality helmet - but Heavy.
THE GOOD:
Great quality helmet. Good attention to details. One of the best liners quality I've seen.
Very good looking helmets. Graphics beats the Japanese ones by far. Loaded with features, including modular.
Extremely quiet - great helmet in that regard.
THE BAD:
Heavy. Not much when yo stand still, but when turning the head you can feel the weight.
Hard to put on & off.
Modular part is hard to close, most times it doesn't work.
THE VERDICT:
If you get them on a big sale (full price is definitely not worth), and (only) if you want a modular helmet, then is an ok buy.
Otherwise I would spend more & get an Arai.

Awesome Helmet
This helmet ticks all my boxes. My original helmet, a Bell RS1, is now five years old and due for replacement. The Bell was a great helmet but, in my new helmet, I wanted the following.
Great fit and safety
Easy blue tooth comms fitment
Modular style
Quiet
As light as possible for a modular style helmet.
Be able to use as an adv style helmet (good air flow plus peak)

Having put some miles with the Schuberth E1, it does tick all the boxes. The only con so far, it's a bit fiddly closing the chin bar, especially when the helmet is off my head being stowed away.
