Metzeler Roadtec 01 Rear Tires

The Metzeler Road Tec 01 Tires represent the latest evolution in touring tires - enhanced grip on wet surfaces, increased mileage, and a high degree of compatibility with different motorcycles.

Features:

  • Increased grip on wet roads, with a focus on low friction surfaces (such as city streets and worn tarmac, low temperature), thanks to radial position of grooves
  • Rebalanced tire stiffness to allow a better adherence of the rubber with the tarmac micro-asperities, increasing mechanical grip even on lower friction surfaces
  • Belt and carcass tension parameters upgraded to increase stability on rear tires during strong braking
  • Increased mileage vs. Roadtec Z8 Interact (up to 10%), thanks to a different footprint shape (larger and shorter) which also enhances motorcycle handling
  • Higher wear resistance, obtained through a revised land/sea ratio on the rear tire in conjunction with the new tread design, ensures product performance consistency allowing users to enjoy the tire for its entire service life
  • Metzeler multi-compound with increased harmonization between the different compounds
  • HWM (Heavy Weight Motorcycles) special version brings the ROADTEC 01 performances to a wider selection of motorcycles
    • Increased stability by reducing both intensity and duration of oscillations due to road irregularities or steering maneuvers
    • Distinguishable by a “Weight” icon next to the product name on the tire sidewall
    • Increased stability is reached by employing a 2-plies carcass on HWM rear tires, where standard rear tires have 1 ply
  • Blackwall
  • Tubeless (TL)
  • W rated for speeds of 168+ MPH

Dont belive the hype, they are good but not amazing if your an all year ridder
Tip in: The tip in is much faster than than Michelin but not as good as dunlop or Avon.

The wet weather grip: Is better than dunlop and avon but not up with Michelin, I could scrape the pegs / get knee down with Michelin's but not with these.

Debris: One main issue is that they are not as good at coping with debris/mud on the road as the Michelin they dont like gravel etc lots of this on the road in the UK winter

Dry Grip: Good dry grip, up with Dunlop and Avon (better than Michelin) but lack feedback to really push hard

Feedback: Again I found this to be lacking, they feel like they have a very still carcass, its hard to tell what the tyre is doing.

Mileage: I found they wore much more evenly than the Michelin (which tend to get stepped) but the back really started to square off at around 3000 miles and now at 4000 it makes them annoying in the wet, which considering i do about 20% of time on motorway is worse than expected id say.

Value: Most expensive pair of tyres I have ever had fitted

Summary: A good all round tyre but its not the best at anything, maybe a jack of all trades. As i get through two sets of tyres a year I preferred having the Michelin fitted in winter and Dunlop or Avon in summer

My ridding:
I ride a vfr 800, cover about 12,000 miles a year in the uk, and make a point of ridding whatever the weather.
Got these fitted as the reviews were glowing, but they were about the most expensive tyre pair i have ever had fitted. Before these I had Dunlop road smart II, Michelin pilot road 3, and Avon 3d xm. I get through two sets of tyre a year. I ride motorways, a roads b roads every day. I race motorcycles and do some instructing, i ride briskly on the road no stupidly, I dont normally write reviews but felt they were skewed too much for comfort for this tyre.

Outstanding Sport Touring Tire
Just completed a 1400 mile, 5 day trip on the best roads in N. Calif. These tires were new at the start and replaced Michelin PR4s.
Likes: Round profile, no center raised area, resulting in very smooth turn in. Better than the PR4s. Excellent grip, better than the PR4s for me. The have a silica grip feel to the touch. Look very good on the bike to me. Not as busy as the PR4s.
Dislikes: None so far. I got 8500 miles on the PR4s and was not to the wear bars, but wanted to try the Roadtec O1s for this trip. I ride a 2014 Yamaha FJR (650 lbs).
The Michelin PR4s were excellent tires, but I think the Roadtec O1s are better (for me). I felt like I had better grip from the jump. Durability is the only question for me. If they go 8000 miles without reaching the wear bars I'll buy another set.

The Metzeler Roadtec 01 Review
Purchased a pair of these for my S1000R and they are amazing. Turn-in is perfect, dry and wet grip are beyond my riding skills. Tread Life will be determined later whereas I have only had by first set for about 2000 miles. I love these so much I have also bought and installed a pair on my KTM 990 SMT and have yet another pair in the mail for my KTM 1290 Superduke. And, in about a month, a pair is going on my S1000XR. If these yield decent mileage they will be only tires I run.

All the press reviews seem spot on!!
I read all the press reviews which were very glowing but not until a friend got a set and raved about them did I decide to give them a shot. Boy am I glad I did. Now granted, I haven't had them on long so I cannot comment on tread life, but based on the previous Z8's they should be respectable. My previous tires were the Pilot Power 3's...awesome sport tires. These feel just as good and perform better in the wet. Super neutral handling, quiet, stable...no hiccups in trail braking...what can I say. My friend has 1,800 miles on his set and they feel and look brand new. So many good tires out there....this should definitely be on your short list!

Really diggin' these tires
Was unhappy with the rear treadlife I was getting on another sport touring tire, figured I'd give these a try. I only have 500 miles on them of freeway, commuting, rain and some twisties. They leave nothing to be desired - they are predictable, not at all twitchy and very stable both upright and at a lean. They require less input to keep leaned over, mid-corner corrections are a breeze. Rain grip was fine, though I didn't push them too hard in the wet. Metzeler really hit a home run with these.

Best Sport Tour Tire Yet
These tires warm up quickly, grip very well on dry road, have excellent feel and feedback. Very confidence inspiring and they tip in nicely too. At 2,000 miles, there is no perceptible wear or cupping. Have just completed three straight touring days in the rain, and I must say I'm amazed at how they perform wet...can't even tell the road is wet while riding in rain mode at the speed limit. Have them on my R12GSA and will put them on my K13S when the time comes. I can't think of any reason why I'd ever buy a different tire, they're that good.

Just breaking them in
Replaced a set of Michelin Pilot Road 4s with these RT 01 tires on my 2012 Suz V-Strom 650. The price was in the same (expensive) ballpark. Relatively few miles at this point, but here's my initial impressions. Very stiff sidewalls, especially on the 150/70-17 rear. Not easy to install - they just about call out for a pneumatic powered machine. I did them without, but it was the toughest install I've ever done the "old school" way. Very easy to balance however. As for the ride quality - very similar feel to the PR4 set. Smooth, quiet, predictable in every sense. Went for a 110 mile out and back to the Outlook Roadhouse on the Ortega Hwy. 3 days ago. A light rain was falling during a portion of that ride. Excellent in semi-aggressive cornering on damp tarmac, but again, similar to the PR4s in their prime. A confident "on the rails" type of tire when banked fairly far over with the power on. Now, if I can just get anything close to the overall mileage that I got with the Michelins, i.e., 14,000 miles rear and 20,000 mi. front, I'll be a completely happy camper.

Good update to the Z8 Interact
Replaced my Metzler Z8 Interacts with the Roadtec 01. 80 miles in...Rides smoother than the Z8 and stability on the highway is better with the same sporty feel. Grip is better in the dry, but feels about the same in the wet. That said, it definitely cuts through standing water on the road more, because when riding in the rain, I have a bigger rooster tail. Can't comment on treadwear yet, but it should be easier to measure with proper treadwear bars, versus whats on the Z8.

Super handling and ride
Put these on my 09 RT in mid-September, replacing Mich PR3s. The great reviews for this tire overcame prior bad experience with Metzelers that came on my BMW. These things are tremendous: turns feel like the bike knows where it should go, with no negative feedback, nice wet and dry traction. I liked the Michelins, but love these so far.

Not the cheapest, but very good in the wet
So I have about 3000 km on my tires now and making a call on the tread life would be presumptuous at this point, but based on what I have seen so far I am impressed with them.
My previous set were Pirelli Diablo Rosso II’s and through they were great tires commuting on them every day I just did not get the tread life on them. Personally I have found the Roadtech-01’s to very confidence inspiring especially in the wet, it’s the first set of tires I have consistently felt confident enough to get peg scrapes with on wet roads. The tires are not the cheapest but if I get more tread life out of these than my Pirellis then these will become my new regulars.
Overall very happy with the Meltzer’s so far.

Excellent commuter tire, OK for the occasional rain, but also the mileage in the middle is incredible, and the sides have excellent grip. I like tires that improve confidence, and these definitely achieve that.

Loved Metzeler tires on older BMWs and it time to try them again. All reviews are very good and I want a sport-touring tire vs sport so these should be an excellent choice. (p.s. I've had 3 flats in 4 years on PR3/4s and those are the only 3 flats in over 30 years!!. The PR3/4 carcass is soooo thin, so I've given up on them.)

Melis H on Apr 10, 2016
