Dainese Torque D1 Air Boots

The latest iteration in the Torque series, the Dainese Torque D1 Air Boots combine several generations of organic and sculptural shape with a more refined and dynamic fit that offers one of the most comfortable and secure boots on the market. Along with unsurpassed comfort, the Torque D1 Boots have a completely redesigned D-Axial system that is centered around strengthening torsion control and increasing airflow into and around the boot. Updated shock absorbing material around the ankle and shin is thinner than previous versions, reducing bulk and weight yet providing higher levels of shock absorption.

The geniuses at Dainese have not only made the Torque D1 Air Boots safer, but have also designed them to help increase lean angle at the track. When off the bike, the reinforced shift pad has been given an integrated flex zone to increase mobility. Subtle changes like the type of internal foam and the addition of magnesium sliders have allowed the Torque D1 to come in at 40g lighter than the older RS, keeping you light on your feet and more maneuverable in the saddle.

Perfect riding boots
I had a very hard picking the right set of boots, and I was willing to spend up to $500 to get good ones. After trying Astar, TCX, and a couple of others, the Dainese are the only ones that truly felt "right" to me. They fit snug which I like, but they are not uncomfortable even after a full day of riding. They also have good but not amazing air flow, and even if you ride in colder environments I would recommend the Air version - just wear warmer socks in the winter months.

The most important aspect of any gear is how it holds up in a crash, and I actually have a first hand account of that now unfortunately. It wasn't actually a crash, but I was on a group ride (which I've never been a fan of - you never know who is competent in the group) when another rider pulled up alongside me and completely inexplicably dropped her 500 pound bike into me which caused a domino effect crash. I was parked with my feet on the ground, and her bike landed on my right leg which forced me onto the ground to the left with her, her bike, and my bike landing hard directly on my left foot and ankle pinning it to the ground. (I also ended up with my shoulder getting slammed into a parked car on the left.)

I had to wait for other people to lift the bikes up so I could get out, and I was pretty confident I had just shattered my foot. Low and behold, I got up and started walking around just waiting for the pain to kick in, but it never came. I thought for sure I would be sore the next morning, but my foot and ankle suffered no damage at all! If I wasn't wearing proper riding boots (I'm sure plenty of other brands would also hold up fine to be fair), I can guarantee I would have been in the hospital with extensive injuries to my foot. The coincidental part of the incident is that it happened when I was stopped and parked about to hop off the bike, so it's important to note you need to protect yourself even when you're not actually riding.

For the protection alone these boots are worth the price, but the fact they're stylish, comfortable and high quality goes a long way to justifying their purchase. I bought another pair of the same boots for my wife to ride on the back of the bike which only happens about once per year, but it's crucial to be geared up even for a single ride!

Great boots with lots of protection
I did a lot of research before buying these boots. I wanted the maximum amount of protection for my foot, shins, and ankle I could find, with a good fit, and not have to break the bank. I tried on a couple of different styles of Dianese boots at one of my local retailers, and a 44 fit perfectly. I wear a US 10.5-11 depending on the brand, and my feet are a bit wider than most, so I was expecting that an Italian company would be on the narrow side, but I was pleasantly surprised at how well these boots fit when they arrived. They're very easy to walk around in, at least for long enough to get off my bike, and into the office. I wouldn't want to walk around in these all day, mostly just because I would feel silly wearing racing boots. Air flow while riding is awesome. My feet stay cool and dry in warm weather, and if it's a bit cold out, I just pitch my toes slightly outward on the peg to move some of the venting out of the main air path. All in all I'm very pleased with these boots, and I would buy them again.

Fantastic boots
These boots are beautifully designed, lightweight, extremely sturdy, and comfortable to wear. I use my motorcycle for canyon carving and a few track days a year. Given that I like my feet in tact, I needed a SOLID pair of boots. These are a great option for the track and bulletproof option for aggressive street riding.

One thing to note if you have wide feet:
Those with wide feet might not feel comfortable in these boots. I don't consider myself to have wide feet; however, it is a pretty exact fit. If my feet were any wider, I'm not sure these would be as comfortable.

Worth it!
I was hesitant to pay the price for these boots, but they are worth every penny. I went down the first track day I had them and they held up better than I could have hoped. Not so much as a sore ankle and they'll certainly hold up to more crashes. Besides all of that, they are very comfortable and my feet felt right as rain at the end of the day, no break in needed.

Great styling, not the best function.
I originally went for these boots for their great styling. Simple and not over the top. Also the rear zip entry and exit makes putting them on and off easy.
However I found riding with them to be not so great. The main issue I had was the design of the inner side that comes into contact with the bike. The plastics stick out too much, sometimes catching or hitting the pegs when lifting my foot onto the bike. This made riding a bit annoying and also makes the plastic scratch up easily. I also found this thickness made tactile feeling on the bike vague when riding (It also made searching for the kickstand vague as well). Some other brands use smoother, less bulky inner sides for better feel on their race boots.
The other general issue I have with Dainese footwear is they don't make 1/2 sizes. They fit true to size with a bit narrow toe. I am a 9 1/2 and a 9 is too tight and 10 tad too loose on all the Dainese footwear I've used. Thus their boots never fit spot on for me.
So overall a good looking boot that could be improved.

Crappy QC
I wasn't sure on size so I ordered two pairs to test. The first was too small, sadly-- they were perfectly made.

The pair that fit had a nasty defect inside one boot. The padding on the top of the foot was bunched, warped, crushed and shifted to the point of discomfort, the folds creating 3 different ridges that all could be felt on the foot in various places.

I thought it was a result of being shipped with the packing paper bunched up, but after 5 days of leaving them to "settle" and 5 nights of "massaging" the material to try to get it in the right place, I realized that they were stitched that way and would never move.

The boots were the last ones in the size I needed at the time, so I didn't try for a third pair.
