Cardo PackTalk Slim JBL Headset - Duo Pack

Cardo partnered with JBL to deliver the best sound quality the market has ever heard. The JBL speakers included with the PackTalk Slim measure 40mm across for a full-range immersive listening experience. You'll hear balanced bass and crisp treble like never before.

Good technology should only compliment your riding experience. With Cardo PackTalk Slim, an advanced Natural Voice Operation platform keeps your hands on your bars where they belong. "Hey Cardo, music on", "Hey Cardo, next track", "Hey Cardo, mute audio"; a full suite of menu navigation lies right within easy reach of your vocal fingertips.

The Cardo PackTalk Slim is high powered DMC (Dynamic Meshwork Communication) technology with a slim, stylish design. DMC allows up to fifteen riders to maintain uninterrupted communications within a spontaneous and fluid virtual network. Unlike other devices, DMC allows each rider to randomly join, leave and re-join the group without compromising the multi-party conference conversation and without pressing any buttons.

When the weather gets tough, the PackTalk keeps going. The PackTalk carries an IP67 waterproof rating. Any rain, sleet, hail or snow will not have an impact on your PackTalk's performance.

The PackTalk Slim includes a set of long and short unit mounts as well as long and short battery mounts. This modularity enables the PackTalk Slim to be compatible with most helmets. See "Helmet Fitment Information (pdf)" for a list of verified fitments with the recommended unit and battery mounts.

Slightly disappointed with product, very dissatisfied with Cardo customer service.
*DISCLAIMER*
This is my first communication unit ever. So this could be the best unit to date as I have no reference to compare too.

My gripes with the product are the following:

1. The cable between unit and battery could stand to be longer. It's uncomfortable how far back I have to reach with the battery centered in the back.

2. The dynamic audio function almost seems non existent. I still have to manually turn up and down the audio as I slow and accelerate.

3. Voice control is nice, but very limited. Would be nice to gain some more controls and I'm hoping will see them in upcoming firmware updates. Siri and OK Google both work with thru this device. So that does add more voice capabilities.
*ATTENTION ANDROID OWNERS*
There is a bug for some devices that prevents OK Google from being activated by a bluetooth mic. It has been reported many times since August 2018 with no fix to date. It affects my device, Galaxy Note 8, and severely limits the usefulness of the Cardo Packtalk. If you're banking on using OK Google thru this comm, as I was, you should verify OK Google will respond to another bluetooth mic you may have.

4. More layers for the speaker extension pads would be nice. Without the extension mine are so far back I can't hear them at speed. With them in the speakers push against my ears which gets painful on 1 hour+ rides.

5. Not even close to the claimed range. If I would have known it was going to fall this short of the claimed range, I would not have went with the Slim. My buddy split lanes and went ahead. I wasn't going to do that so I just sat and waited. He was still in eye sight when we lost connection. The unit did automatically reconnect though. That was nice.

6. App could definitely use some work.

My pros:

1. JBL speakers have great quality. It's hard to tell at speed, but trying them out in the house I was really impressed.

2. Voice control is amazing and I'm excited for it to be the industry standard.

3. Install was very easy. Almost universal if you have an X-Acto knife.

4. The unit addresses you as the nickname you set. I don't know why I enjoy this so much, but I really do.

Now for the customer service experience and disappointment...

I recieved my device on the 27th of February. Over the next 6 days I get about 5 hours of use out of it. I come home the night of March 5th, plug my helmet in, and double checked the charging light. I had a long ride planned for the next day so I wanted to be sure it'd have a full charge. The morning of the 6th the charging light is dark and the unit refuses to turn on. My ride got cut short due to snow. So I came home and called Cardo customer support.

First off, the call quality is crap. I could barely hear the rep over the rep next to him who's on a call with someone else. That complicated the process from the start.

I told the rep everything that happened. He said he understood and would get another unit on the way ASAP. I just had to send them some information in a response to an email he was about to send. I get the email and immediately respond with the info he needed. I didn't get a response, but I figured they were on it.

The next morning I get an email back saying "Out of curiosity which buttons are you using to power on?". This kind of irritated me as it seemed like a question to ask during the call. Also, there's only one way to power on the device. Basically they were asking if I knew how to turn it on. Which they should have known since I told them I had already used it a few times. I respond politely and name the buttons.

The next day I get an email informing me that my new unit will ship after I submit proof that I shipped the unit in my possession out. At this point I'm upset we've wasted 3 business days for something that could have been accomplished on the first day. I express my dissatisfaction in a reply. That was the one and only time I didn't have to wait until 6:30am the next day for a response. A response that was essentially meaningless, though I appreciate the rep trying to help me out. I got my unit shipped out the same day and submitted the proof.

They sent me another email saying the case is being sent to logistics and that I'll get a tracking number when it ships. That was four days ago and still no tracking number. Maybe I'm an a-hole, but for a product that costs this much, that broke so soon, you'd think they'd try to make it right ASAP.

TL;DR
I paid $600 after taxes for a unit that broke in less than a week. I've been without it longer than I had it. Really wish I would have gone with Sena.

Slim yes, but adds some bulk to other areas
Fitted to a medium Arai XD4. This helmet is somewhat slim and compact so I thought it would be a good fit for the PT Slim. I ended up have a couple of fitment issues though. The control unit overhangs the shell slightly which ends up putting some pressure on the neck roll. This reduces the opening size and makes the helmet difficult to pull over my ears. After a few on and off exercises my ears were raw and I knew this would be a problem. Also, the battery pack blocks some rear venting and ends up contacting the collar of my jacket (no good).
The quality and features of this unit are top notch. Sound quality is noticeably better with the JBL vs. the previous model Bold and you can tell someone spent some time getting this right. I did have a hard time using the buttons for volume control vs. the roller style, part of the trade off in the design I guess.
I think the slim design will work for some helmets very well, just not good for my personal fitment. I'll have to stick with the Bold style instead.
