Biltwell Gringo S Helmet

The Gringo S is built around Biltwell's injection-molded ABS outer shell and features a shock-absorbing EPS liner with hand-stitched interior padding, cheek pads, and BioFoam chin bar cushion for comfort. A hinged eye port shield raises the style and function of the Gringo S by introducing 70's F1 flavor for bikeriders who eschew the feature creep that has plagued modern full face helmets for decades. The Gringo S shield boasts awesome optics and simple hinge mechanics for high style and easy removal for replacement or cleaning. A snap and tab configuration on the rider's left side offers speedy opening and secure closing to protect its wearer from road debris and wind irritation with little fanfare or complication. The comfortable chinstrap features brushed Lycra material on touch points and a flat D-ring fastener with an adjustable snap-style end retainer.

Features:

  • Injection-molded ABS outer shell with hand-painted finish
  • Expanded polystyrene inner shell
  • Hand-sewn brushed Lycra liner with contrasting diamond-stitched quilted open-cell foam padding
  • Internal BioFoam chin pad with hand-sewn contrast stitching
  • Rugged plated steel D-ring neck strap with adjustment strap end retainer
  • Injection-molded, laser CNC cut polycarbonate eye port shield with stylish, rugged aluminum hinge covers and mounting hardware
  • Rubber or Chrome accented edging on shell and eye port
  • Meets DOT safety standards

Bell 500 vs Gringo S
Now I understand that Im comparing a 3/4 face helmet to a full face helmet but I'm sure There will be someone out there in the same or similar situation as I was. Im pretty new to helmets as I have only owned a Custom 500 and now this. But what I can tell you is this helmet is 10x better that my 500 on every level.

First of all the bell uses this pleather/vinyl type of material on the interior which can get hot an uncomfortable. The Gringo on the other hand uses this microfiber suede type of material which is just much more luxurious and pleasure to wear over the course of time. All though this helmet is pretty basic, those basic features are done extremely well. I went with the S version so I could take the shield off if I felt like it but to be honest I don't really feel like I will be, since its such a nice addition to the Gringo.

As for fit wise I wear a 2XL in Bell Custom 500 and I wear the same in the Gringo S and It fits so much better. My 500 would ride up or push down on my head depending if I had a windshield on my bike or not. The Gringo S doesn't matter what Im doing, windshield or not it just stays where its suppose to. Im not sure if its true but the Gringo S also feels lighter than the 500 as well and its a full face! I forget Im wearing it sometimes because its that comfortable. When I get home from a ride the first thing I used to do was take my helmet off. Now I go and open the garage door and get my bike put away before taking my helmet off. Its usually the last thing I do now.

When riding in town I keep the shield up one notch and there is no fogging at stoplights get going 35mph and you can close it without it fogging on you. The mechanism on the side to lock the shield down works as it should and fells like it should last a long time. I wear sunglasses and headphones on the inside of the helmet and there is no problem with room. When i did the same thing with my Bell 500 I would pinch the side of head causing mild headaches. I believe this comes from the type of material differences the bell uses (pleather, vinyl). The microsuede on the Gringo S is lightyears better in comfort.

I rode all of 2014 with my Bell Custom 500 and decided this year I wanted something with more protection and comfort. I researched pretty extensively between the Gringo S and the Bell Bullit and after all the reviews I read about issues the Bullit was having also double the price of the Gringo S was another concern, Im firmly believe I made the right decisions as I couldn't be happier with the Gringo S.

Great Helmet
Biltwell Gringo S is a fantastic helmet. Having lived with it for a few months now, I'm happy with my purchase. A few cons to think about:
1. Only cheek pads are removable, to my knowledge.
2. Strap loops are small and don't hang low enough from the bottom of the helmet. Makes strapping up harder than it needs to be.
3. Shield can become loose over time.

But the pros far outweigh the cons:
1. Awesome, classic design.
2. Light weight.
3. Excellent full face protection.
4. Extremely comfortable.
5. No frills design...it's a helmet, wear it!
6. Excellent optics, no warped vision.

Great Looking Lid But..
This is a really sweet looking helmet. For the price it really is hard to beat. The closest helmet that fits the cafe/vintage look would be the Bell Bullit, just navigate over to that lid and see the price difference. In comparison to the bullit, the Gringo S is much more comfortable. I'm just going to list out some pros and cons for you:

Pros:
- Quite light.
- Snug fitting on the cheeks.
- Great quilted lining on the inside.
- Pretty quiet.
- Good airflow.
- Despite not having a rubber seal around the chrome, rain was not a problem.
- Cuts the wind pretty well considering how retro it looks.
- Liners have good sized cut outs for Bluetooth coms.

Cons:
- Only the cheek pads are removable, the top lining isn't.
- The chrome border around the visor has already started wearing down from rubbing against the visor.
- Included helmet bag is a tad small, so quite a bit of the helmet will be showing through.

I'd still highly recommend it. Sharp looks, great price.

Boiler Plate Helmet with a Fresh Look
Owner of a size large Gingo S in Matte Black
Tested 300+ miles commuting and cruising southern Maine

Cons:
Non-removable liner
Chincy chin strap
Weak visor
No vents
You can find a cheaper helmet for your first bike

Pro:
Wide field of view
Comfortable fit
Full face protection
Wide bottom opening is good for air circulation
Looks even better with the visor out
Compatible with goggles

Summery:
Used factory size chart to order a L, which was snug out of the box on my typically XL dome, but the padding compressed and settled-in nicely after about 100 miles. I went with the Gringo S over the Gringo on the basis of wearing glasses and needing to have easy access to adjust them (as I saw this was more difficult with the snap on blast/bubble shields). No vents mean riding the visor 1/8 open to stop fogging and to let air, this isn't a problem really and in my opinion well worth being able to flip up your visor and scratch your nose. I didn't try any anti-fog treatment because I cracked the visor (where it connects with the helmet hardware) the first time fastening it on a ride. Oh well, visor is not a quick released, but is very easy to remove. Tried to find an old jet pilot helmet shield that would interface well, but no dice. Instead I picked up two pairs of Kroop's Triple Slot Horse Racing Goggles, one in tinted one in clear for cheap online (they are perfect, side vents eliminate fogging even when where them over prescription glasses). Lack of feature doesn't upset me, the Gringo's basic design is ergonomic but also athletically beautiful in it's simplicity, offers full face protection with a classic look that is hard to find for less than $399 (currently on sale for $319.96, haha). Overall I would recommend this helmet, I would get it in Gloss White next time!

definitely some drawbacks
There are some serious pros and cons but For starters it's darn light. Like box feels empty when you get it light. The shape works well when riding and there is no struggle with wind buffeting etc. it's a nice smooth ride. The field of vision is excellent and the face shield seals well. The size runs true to the sizing chart. The padded chin strap is a very nice touch including the strap keeper.

Now for the cons. The helmet is not the quietest by any means. The entire helmet is about an inch to shallow so while it fits the crown etc perfectly, expect your chin to stick out of the bottom. It's just the style I guess. The biggest complaint is the amount of wind that sucks up in the chin area. There is no padding in the mouth of the helmet so it acts like a dang wind funnel and makes it as if you stuck a blower permenently blowing air up into the visor and back into your eyes. Not cool. Makes a cold ride miserable.this is while riding my 72 cb450 so im fairly upright. may not be as bad if leaned over on the tank with lower bars. There are no vents (didn't expect any) so it will fog up rather quickly when slowing down in cold weather. A larger size just makes the wind funneling worse so i chalk it up to design flaw.

Overall I'm going to keep rocking the helmet but I should have spent the extra cash and got a bell bullitt

Light, pretty, stilysh, WINDY
I like most things about this helmet. It is light, pretty, comfortable unless you have a long chin. I bought it for daily commute use, on a highway. The windshield has a huge gap (2 mm) to the helmet, with nothing to seal it... As a result, you get almost as much wind in your face as if the shield were not there... I would be crying after riding for 30 mintues at 65 miles / hour.
Buy for short, mellow rides or city rides. Do not buy for the road commute or road trip.

Great helmet--light weight looks great
This is my third helmet in my search for one that offers comfort and protection. I love this helmet. It takes a few attempts to master the visor snap, and raising it between stop lights is the only way to control the fog at low speeds. However, once on the highway, there is plenty of air coming up from below to keep the visor and your glasses clear and there are no rattles--it's solid. The large opening provides good peripheral vision. The light weight and internal construction make it comfortable for long rides.

Style was the main choice. The helmet is great for short city riding, very comfortable, but zero ventilation and lots of wind gets in the helmet so its loud and breezy, compared to other helmets. Great retro, clean style though, get a lot of compliments with the gold mirror bubble shield.

Amazing helmet with great comfort and even better design.

Great helmet. Sizing chart is accurate. Super cool look. Pop up visor is useful to me since I wear corrective glasses. It is also nice to sheild from the wind, although I typically do not clasp it all the way because fast speeds on the hwy create a bit of a wind tunnel through the top & effects visibility.

Sleek vintage style, for a reasonable price. It's the "tuxedo" of motorcycle helmets.

love the look, good fair price, even though you do see it around a lot. Just wish is was also snell certified but can't complain too much when you are buying a $200 helmet.

Wanted a cafe racer type of helmet which provides adequate protection, style and comfort. From the reviews this helmet fit the bill.

I really liked the style of this helmet and the interior is very friendly for warmer climates.

Wanted the Spectrum at first, but went for the gloss instead. Timeless, universal style. Shield was a must for eye/sunglasses.

The sizing charts (Biltwell vs. RevZilla) seem to differ quite a bit (two whole sizes, in my case!). My head measured around 58cm, but I do plan on making sure.
Anyway, according to the RevZilla chart, I seem to be a medium. As I was with my AGV Skyline and my Dad's Shoei GT Air. But Biltwell's chart says I'm an XL.

Has anyone had any experience with a similar situation?
Yarden Z on Nov 14, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Same here. I ordered the M, it doesn't fit. Being returned. Way too small. Now the debate is, try the L or go with XL as per Biltwell site.
Does anyone know if the shield and hinges on the Gringo S can be removed and used with just goggles? It gets to be 110 in the summer where I live so the extra ventilation from removing the shield would be really nice, but I also want the shield of the S to be an option for when (if) it rains
ryanxalves on Oct 8, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Yes, it appears so. They offer replacement hardware kits that just screw on, so I would assume you could just unscrew it and replace the screw without the shield.

How easy or hard is it to wear glasses with this helmet?
Corey J on Nov 23, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Very easy. I wear sunglasses and eyeglasses all the time. Very comfortable helmet.
Hi,

I wear size L for Arai RX7. what size should i get for the Biltwell Gringo Shield?
A shopper on Feb 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I used the sizing guide provided on the website. Simply measuring the circumference of my head and comparing it to the size guide provided a perfect fit.
Hi. I often ride in Europe. Does the Biltwell Gringo meet the european standards (E...) ?
Or does any retro design helmet meet the Europeen standard ?
Thanks a lot for you answers.

Is this the same exact size and shape as the original Gringo with just an added hinged shield? Or is it slight smaller and less bulkier?
A shopper on Dec 2, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Shape and size are the exact same as the original gringo. Just make sure you verify your helmet size using the Biltwell sizing chart as I usually wear a size medium in all other helmets but went with a size Large with the biltwell and it fits perfectly.
Any chance of vents as I see this will have shield now so wouldn't it fog if there no vents???
Umarot12 on Nov 17, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Enough air cones up under the chin. I have the Gringo, I put a bubble shield in it and I wear glasses. No fogging for me
Is there any anti fog insert fits to this helmets visor? or is it possible to make it pinlock compatible? I am about to urchase but im worry about the fogging

I have a question about the fit of this helmet. My head measurement is 56cm.
I know that RevZilla mentions that their sizing chart differs from the one that Biltwell provides but in my case (56cm) I would need a Small according to RevZilla and a Large according to Biltwell.
That's quite a difference and I'm confused now which size to choose. Any advice on this? Maybe settle for a Medium instead?
A S on May 19, 2015
BEST ANSWER: I have a 55-56 dome and I got the small fits perfect! I would go with the small. The medium was a little too big so sent it back.
