Arai Pro Shade System for VAS-V Compatible Helmets

Nowadays it is quite common to use a retractable sunvisor that is situated between the helmet’s outer and inner shell to protect against sun glare. However, it is Arai’s opinion that this construction could affect the performance of a helmet during impact. As the Pro Shade System is completely mounted on the outside of the helmet, it will not in any way negatively affect the performance of the helmet.

The Pro Shade System is a small peak that is locked in position. Unlocking is easy; just pull the Pro Shade System forward, then it can be flipped down with a flick of the hand to act as an effective sun-visor. The Pro Shade System is the complete all-weather system for serious touring riders, offering protection against sun glare, fogging and misting, especially for riders that prefer an upright seating position and/or the comfort of a fairing, the Pro Shade System will enhance the rider’s comfort significantly.

Features:

  • Fits the Arai Corsair X, Signet-X and Quantum-X
  • Complete system, pre-mounted on clear Arai VAX-V MAX Vision visor (included)
  • Enhanced aerodynamics
  • Increased helmet stability
  • Removable for easy cleaning
  • No contact with visor, no scratching

Better than the original
I've been using Arai's Pro Shade system on Corsair-V helmets for a full two years, and the new VAS compatible Pro Shade on the Corsair-X takes things to a new level.

There are multiple improvements and refinements over the original SAI compatible version.

First, it now has four detent positions, making it even more flexible in use.

Second, it has more coverage. This means it sits further out in the top most position, but there's no consequences to aerodynamics at speed. And it covers more of the clear visor when in the down position.

Third, it has better clearance to the MAX Vision visor underneath. No scratching.

Fourth, the VAS system eliminates the annoying scratches that would form along the top of a Pinlock insert after a few months of opening and closing, due to the superior clearance of the VAS.

I'm very happy with this item.

Really great upgrade...
I have the Larger Pro Shade System on my Arai RX-Q. It was so great when I upgraded to the new Signet-X I had to get the new VAS-V Pro Shade System. I really like the upgrades such as, larger Shade, the system has more stopping points, it does not come in contact with the shield, and it is more aerodynamic, which means less air noise and no drag when it is either up or down.
It really is a most buy due to the over all advantages the system offers. Visor like a baseball hat or flip it down for complete UV protection. Flip it down during the night to avoid oncoming traffic lights. Adjust the visor to get that perfect shade from the sun reducing glare. On so much more. I saved so much money on extra tinted shields. I also saved time by not having to stop pop off one shield and put on another, beside an extra shield means extra storage and a shiled protector when not in use. This is a helmet upgrade I did not regret...

Works as intended, doesnt feel like "Arai" quality
This is my first impression after a short ride. I bought this visor for the Quantum X, an expensive, but high quality helmet. My stock visor locked closed when I closed the visor from the open position. After applying the supplied silicone oil and trying to make it lock by flicking it down slightly harder than normal, it will not seat into the locked position. I now have to remember to give the shield a push to completely lock the shield. The brow vents are a definite step down from the stock visor as well. They feel super cheap, wouldn't be surprised if this is the first point of failure on this helmet. There is only an open and closed on the brow vents, as opposed to the stock shield having a half open position on top of the fully open/closed positions. So, I gained the ability to tint the visor on the fly, but lost the quality feel of the brow vents and the automatic shield locking when you close the visor. I feel a bit cheated, I added money to my already expensive helmet but I feel like I lost some quality. This shade is 90% of the way there, just needs some TLC.

Don't grumble, give a whistle!
"Always look on the bright side of life"
and on the shielding bright light, this piece of kit does a grand job.
Clearly manufactured by Arai from Japan versus Ali from China, very well.

Owning already a clear and a smoke visor but not wanting to carry either as "spare" all the time, this seemed the perfect solution.

With the sun visor down, great! No discernable extra wind noise. Perfect blended vision. Happy chappy.

Put it in the middle or high up position and a distinct whistle appear which rises and falls with the variation in speed. Not a happy camper.

For reference: with the entire visor up, there is no whistle.

With main visor down and sun visor 1/2 or completely up, I can make the whistle go away by placing my hand over the rubber strip on the sun visor, but that was not in the design brief I reckon.
Or tilt my head 20 degrees down (which then stops the whistle) which doesnot allow safe viewing of the road ahead.

Both on my -pretty much sitting straight up- Honda VF500F2 and my -Ducati here I come- Honda RC51, this annoying whistle is always there. with the sun visor 1/2 or completely up.

Acceptable for a 10 second ride though a tunnel or a shaded forest section. But absolutely not for say riding home in the evening after a day riding in the sun.

So no, for me, on my bikes, this is not what I expected and see this as a unfortunate purchase.

But as always, YMMV

Ride safe!

Great idea, just needs more refining
My first 2 rides in my Aria Signet-Q with a pro-shade included some rain, some sun and everything in between. After returning home from a day out and a day back I noticed a bunch of scratches on both the sunshield as well as the clear lens. The whole lower edge of the sun visor must have have picked up some grit from the road in the rain and when it got sunny again and I lowered the shield that grit must have vibrated between the 2 plastic layers and damaged both. Clearly the rubber bumper which is designed to keep a gap between the lenses is not thick enough and allowed this to happen. It's too bad as the design is nice and the function is great, but I can't tolerate looking through a scratched shield. Basically a waste of $100.
