If 2020 didn’t throw you for a loop, you were either very fortunate or very recently born.
This year has been an absolute rollercoaster for motorcycling. Dealership closures and a steep dropoff in bike sales clouded the spring, but stimulus checks and the allure of socially distant riding revitalized the industry. Used and off-road bike sales exploded over the summer, and a slew of new motorcycles in what would have been EICMA season showed great promise for the dual-sport, naked, and middleweight sport classes. Electric motorcycles gained new footholds, EURO 5 emissions standards forced lots of powerplant changes among ICE bikes, and economic swings threatened the world’s largest motorcycle market, India. Sturgis provoked national discourse, more motorcycle publications folded up or went digital, and Editor Lance even changed up his motorcycle fleet for the first time in a decade with the addition of a last-gen VFR. I could go on, but I’ll leave that to Spurgeon, Zack, and Lance in the latest episode of Highside/Lowside.
In addition to a 2020 recap, the hosts are also looking ahead to 2021. What’s next for motorcycling, and what will it mean for us? I think we’ll see large numbers of lightly used bikes for sale in the spring, so keep some cash handy if you’re in the market. We can also expect to see Harley-Davidson pivot in new directions as Jochen Zeitz completes his first year at the helm of the company. Here’s hoping we’ll see a cautious and safe return to riding together, but as Zack points out in the episode, we don’t have a crystal ball tucked away in RevZilla’s HQ. (If we did, our annual predictions would get much better scores from Lance!)
What stood out the most to you in 2020? And what do you hope to see in the next year? The future is anyone’s guess, but if you’re wishing for more episodes of Highside/Lowside, the odds are definitely in your favor.
