Video: What actually happens inside a carburetor?

Jul 06, 2021

Carburetors can be intimidating, or at least mysterious, if you don’t have a clear idea of what’s going on inside. Destin of SmarterEveryDay decided to build a transparent carburetor with his father, Derryl, to better explain the basic principles at work inside a carb.

Destin is an engineer who started a YouTube channel after making a video to show his friends how to start a bonfire with fireworks. Now the SmarterEveryDay channel has almost a billion views across 350 videos on all kinds of topics. I highly recommend his videos on how an engine works, the physics of motocross, and riding a bicycle with inverted steering. That said, this carburetor video must be my favorite SmarterEveryDay video yet.

I’ve had my fair share of carbs apart, but my understanding always came from diagrams and theory, not observation. There isn’t much to see once a carburetor is installed (especially with an airbox) and the engine is running. A clear carburetor, on the other hand, provides the perfect opportunity for Destin to showcase his signature slow-motion camera skills. I must have watched those atomization shots a dozen times. Keep in mind that your average motorcycle carburetor will have more features and passages for better fueling across a wider rev range — you get the idea.

Fuel injection is dominant today for a long list of reasons, but injectors can’t match the beauty of what happens inside Destin’s carburetor. Hopefully you learned something today, too. Destin accepts video ideas, so if there’s a concept you’d like to see explained, drop your suggestion here.
