If you ever hear me say "I do my own motorcycle stunts," it probably means something mildly ill-advised like I rode my motorcycle to a track day and successfully didn't crash, so I had a way to get home. For Tom Cruise, it's a little more grand.
In case you missed it, video is out of the actor's latest motorcycle stunt for the next Mission: Impossible film. Yes, he rides off a ramp atop a mountain and parachutes away. Here's one of the various clips you can find on YouTube.
If you want more, this short clip of quotes from Cruise talking about doing his own stunts also serves as a sort of "greatest hits" compilation. And he did take a few hits, it seems.
My only question: Why is it totally taboo to wear a motorcycle helmet in the movies? Skydivers wear helmets. Motorcyclists often wear helmets. Why is it absolutely out of the question for the character in a movie to be wearing a helmet when he's riding a motorcycle off a cliff and skydiving?
I never understand Hollywood.
Update: Now there's a more complete look at how the stunt was done and the planning that went into it.
