Video: The making of Ducati's new DesertX adventure bike

Jun 07, 2022

Back in 2019, Ducati brought a funky rally-inspired concept to EICMA called the DesertX, then feigned surprise at the positive press it received. Who knew a Ducati adventure motorcycle with a proper 21-inch front wheel and retro rally styling would be popular?

Riders around the world expressed interest in a new ADV option that blended classic looks with modern performance. The DesertX would become even more modern when the concept's air-cooled 1,100 cc engine was upgraded to the 937 cc Testastretta twin with liquid cooling.

The DesertX got the green light for production, and it finally became a production model this year. But how did Ducati’s new ADV go from an idea, to a concept, to a production model on the dealership floor? This new video from Borgo Panigale gives a look behind the scenes at Ducati’s development process.

Project sponsor Claudio De Angeli speaks with Director of the Centro Stile Ducati Andrea Ferraresi, R&D Vehicle Director Pierluigi Zampieri, Ducati Official Tester Matteo Graziani, and Vehicle Testing Department Manager Luigi Mauro to get the full story behind one of Ducati’s most unique recent releases. Our man Spurgeon traveled to Italy for a first ride review of the Ducati DesertX, so be sure to check out his story and video if this bike piques your interest.
