Here at Common Tread, we’ve covered the basics of buying a used motorcycle pretty extensively, from a basic checklist to how to avoid getting burned. Colton takes a more dirt-specific approach in his guide.
As a used bike guy, I’ve broken almost every one of Colton’s rules when buying dirt bikes. I’ve had the steer clear year bikes, the basket cases, the unknown non-runners, and all the rest, and I have to agree with all his pointers. All this information is especially important to those of you riding two-strokes, since used is practically the default, unless you want a KTM or a few others.
One great tip goes unsaid in the video, although it’s clearly shown: Sometimes buying from a friend is the best way to go. Understanding the seller is at least half the battle when buying used, and unless your friends are a lot shadier than mine, you can focus on the bike instead of polite interrogations and you may even get a friendly price thrown your way. Two of the best used bikes I’ve ever purchased came from fellow Zillans, so if you’re in the market, don’t forget to ask your buddies!
