Video: "Bennett's War" trailer, new motocross movie

May 02, 2019

Motorcycling gets so little attention from Hollywood that we tend to gush over just about anything that features motorcycles, good or bad.

Example: Not long ago, a friend was raving about the old 1970 movie "Little Fauss and Big Halsey," so I decided I should watch it. There went 90 minutes of my life swirling away.

This summer we get another chance, as "Bennett's War," a film focusing on motocross from Forrest Films, debuts in August.

The lead, played by Michael Roark, is a wounded vet who is told he can't race motocross any more. He comes home to find out that his father, played by Trace Adkins, is in danger of losing the family farm. So he decides to go racing, despite the risk, to win the money needed to save the ranch.

Anyone who knows much about racing will immediately recognize the flaw in the plot. Motorcycle racing is a fabulous way to spend money but a terrible way to accumulate money. I am certain that motocross has led to far more second mortgages being taken out than first mortgages being paid off.

But this is Hollywood, so a suspension of disbelief is always required (and sometimes that suspension is large enough that cranes are necessary). I'm sure the film will convey the excitement and passion of racing, however. It was written and directed by Alex Ranarivelo, who has incorporated his interest in motorsports in previous movies, all the way back to his thesis film in school.

And I'm sure a lot of us will love "Bennett's War," just as some very prominent people in the motorcycle world continue to gush over "Little Fauss and Big Halsey" and any other Hollywood production that happens to turn a light on our particular obsession.
