At 37, Travis Pastrana’s resume of records, wins, projects, and motorsports disciplines can make him seem older than he actually is. Then again, he was only 15 when he won freestyle MX gold at X Games 5 before jumping his bike into San Francisco Bay. Neither Pastrana, nor FMX, would ever be the same.
There’s little the man hasn’t done or won on two wheels in the last 20 years. One exception is American Flat Track’s Super TT racing, which takes the sideways dirt action of flat track and adds more turns (including at least one right-hander), jumps, and longer straightaways. Speeds across the finish line on the front straight of the tri-oval course at Atlanta will exceed 100 mph.
Super TTs attract flat-track regulars as well as motocrossers and other dirt racers for a relatively diverse grid. For example, motocross star and ISDE winner Ryan Sipes won the Buffalo Chip TT twice with Red Bull KTM.
“I haven’t been able to beat Ryan Sipes at anything on two wheels in a very long time,” said Pastrana. “It probably won’t happen at the Atlanta Super TT, but I bet him $1 that it would. Either way, it’s going to be a lot of fun trying!” Anything can happen with Pastrana on the course. Just ask Colin McRae.
The AFT Super TT is ideal for experienced wildcard riders like Pastrana, and a fun way to start watching AFT if you’re looking to get started. The race goes down on a modified track at Atlanta Motor Speedway with two right-hand turns, a jump, and a long road section. (If this goes well, maybe Pastrana can make his own reboot of “The Superbikers” for more racing on mixed terrain. )
