One point. You can't get much closer than that and, in fact, the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship battle is the closest in history as it heads for a conclusive showdown Saturday.
Monster Energy Star Yamaha Racing's Eli Tomac is just one point ahead of Team Honda HRC's Chase Sexton going into the final round, the PristineAuction.com Fox Raceway II National at Pala, California. The two championship contenders traded moto wins this past weekend at the Tucker Freight Lines Ironman National in Indiana. They emerged in the same position as they went into the weekend, just one point apart, though Sexton was credited with the overall win with his 2-1 finishes to Tomac's 1-2. See the highlights from Ironman Raceway in the video below.
The season concludes at Fox Raceway, the same track where it began on May 28. That could give Sexton a little confidence boost, as he won both motos in the season-opening round while Tomac finished 7-4. Sexton needs to outscore Tomac by two points to win the championship, since Tomac would win the title on the tie-breaker if they end up with equal points. Given the way the two competed with each other for the moto wins at Ironman, that may mean that Sexton needs two moto wins. He can't count on anyone else getting ahead of Tomac to help him out.
If Sexton prevails, Honda riders have a good chance of winning both championships, as Jett Lawrence has a big 41-point lead in the 250 class as he defends his title from 2021.
Whatever happens, Fox Raceway is going to be a pressure cooker, both literally and figuratively. The forecast calls for triple-digit temperatures on race day.
