Realism be damned: Amazon Prime debuts "One Fast Move" trailer

Jul 16, 2024

When Hollywood puts motorcycles on the silver screen, realism hardly applies.

Why does that Ducati sound like an inline-four? Did that BMW R 1200 C just jump over a helicopter? Is that Yamaha Road Star keeping up with a jet-powered superbike?

For every "Easy Rider," there’s a "Biker Boyz." For every "The Wild One," there’s a "Torque." One is rooted in reality. The other, not so much. Based on the first trailer for "One Fast Move," an R-rated action-drama set in the club racing world, it’s clear that it sides with the former. Or, at least it tries.

Before we unpack that, let’s set the scene. Wes, played by former "Riverdale" star KJ Apa, is running from a troubled past. He illegally races his motorcycle and promptly crashes said motorcycle. For the trailer’s purposes, that’s enough evidence to justify his incarceration. The plot only thickens when Wes completes his prison sentence and seeks out his absent father.

Enter the obligatory love interest, who waits on tables at a local diner. (Talk about a stock character.) Then the “legend, Dean Miller ‘speed killer’” (what does that even mean?), a local club racer and Wes’ estranged father, arrives on the scene. That’s where the trailer goes left.

At the 30-second mark, Wes utters the famous last words, “I want to race.”

“Your time has passed,” responds Dean.

To which Wes reveals, “I’ve got $76 to my name right now.”

Well, you won’t have that $76 much longer, bud.

As Lance previously acknowledged when writing about another motorcycle movie, racing is a good way to spend money, not make it. That’s not the only way "One Fast Move" stretches the truth in the name of drama. Are fistfights common in the pits? Are club racers typically funded by “one of the wealthiest families in the state?”

At the same time, the film (well, the trailer at least) gets a lot right. The sport bikes don’t sound like Harleys. The crowd sizes feel accurate for U.S. club racing. Even the on-track action looks authentic.

Motorcyclists are used to suspending disbelief at the cinema. "One Fast Move" still requires that, just to a lesser degree. That’s why I’ll be planted on my couch when the film premieres on Amazon Prime on August 8. It’s a movie about motorcycle racing. How often do you get to say that? Take my money, Tinsel Town.
