Motorcycle trailers save lives and other wild stuff from Daytona Bike Week

Mar 14, 2022

A year ago, as Daytona Bike Week got into full swing, we posted a video of a guy on a Harley-Davidson jumping a drawbridge that was in the process of opening. This year, it's already gotten a little wilder — and didn't go so well.

A rider on a Honda Gold Wing decided for some reason (presumably one that seemed like a good idea at the time) to ignore the warning gate lowering to close the drawbridge. Amazingly, the bike was left dangling over the edge of the bridge but was saved by the trailer. Somehow, the rider survived.

And yes, there was some racing, and probably much rejoicing in certain circles, when an old guy on an Indian used age and experience to beat the Harley-Davidsons in the second King of the Baggers race. Of course that "old guy" was 57-year-old Jeremy McWilliams, who has MotoGP rides on his resume. He doesn't have much experience on an Indian Challenger turned race bike, but he used his experience to draft past his teammate, Tyler O'Hara, at the finish line to win the second Mission King of the Baggers race by 0.025 seconds.

The finish of the Daytona 200 was even better, with four riders drafting each other to the finish line and all four finishing within 0.126 seconds. Brandon Paasch won his second straight Daytona 200 on his TOBC Racing Triumph, just 0.007 seconds ahead of Attack Performance Yamaha rider Cameron Petersen. Petersen's fellow South African, Sheridan Morais, was less than a tenth of a second back and four-time AMA Superbike champion Josh Hayes was fourth, all of them covered by a blink of an eye.

Perhaps just as wild as a Gold Wing dangling from a drawbridge was Anthony Mazziotto getting a little too intimate with the wall at the Daytona International Speedway. He came out of it OK, however, still finishing on the podium.

All kinds of strange stuff happens at Bike Week.
