It's a brutal combination for race fans. Here we are, self-isolating, at the same moment all the racing has been canceled. The folks at MotoGP.com understand your pain. They have something that can help.
Even if you don't have a MotoGP Videopass subscription, you can watch some of the greatest races ever. MotoGP.com dug into the archives and selected 10 great races and made them available to everyone for free.
That includes the 2018 Dutch CP at Assen, with six different riders leading, and the fateful 2006 Portuguese Grand Prix. The latter was the race in which Dani Pedrosa crashed and took out his teammate, Nicky Hayden, who was then leading the world championship. It appeared to end Hayden's hopes of beating Valentino Rossi for the title, but at the end of the same race, Toni Elias scored an amazing victory over Rossi that would make all the difference in the final points standings after the next and final round. That Portugal race has to be one of the most dramatic of MotoGP races.
If you've just started following MotoGP in recent years, may I recommend you watch the 2008 U.S. Grand Prix at Laguna Seca? If you're new to the sport, that probably means you never saw Casey Stoner on the Ducati, the only man who could win on that machine. You never saw a MotoGP race on U.S. soil with four U.S. riders. The idea of Bridgestone versus Michelin battles may seem odd to you. You'll also get to see Hayden in his prime, Andrea Dovizioso in his rookie year and, best of all, a classic one-on-one battle between Stoner and Valentino Rossi. The ending was anti-climactic, but the first two thirds of the race made this one worth inclusion in the top 10.
If you want an incredible finish and even deeper history, go back to the 500 cc era when "traction control" consisted of riders expertly feathering the clutch to try to control the hyper-narrow powerbands of the powerful two-strokes and keep the bikes from high-siding them into the grandstands, a painfully common occurrence. The Spanish Grand Prix of 1996 was a classic battle between Repsol Honda teammates Mick Doohan and Alex Crivillé that was decided on the final corner of a chaotic last lap with fans invading the track before the race finished.
See the list of MotoGP.com's picks and relive some great races, at least until the real thing returns.
