MotoGP postpones U.S. round at Circuit of the Americas

Jan 22, 2021

MotoGP has given up on plans to hold the two rounds of the championship in the Americas in the spring. The U.S. and Argentina races have been postponed.

MotoGP issued a revised schedule today that simply labels the two rounds in the Americas as postponed, with no new dates set.

Instead, the series will start with two rounds at the Losail International Circuit in Qatar on consecutive weekends, instead of the usual single opening race. Then comes a race at the Algarve International Circuit in Portugal in April, when the series expected to be at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. After that, the series resumes its previous schedule in Europe.

"The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and resulting lockdowns and complications sadly oblige the postponement of both the Argentina GP and the Americas GP until the last quarter of 2021, with the Mandalika International Street Circuit in Indonesia being placed as a reserve Grand Prix venue, subject to homologation," read the statement posted on the MotoGP website.

Moving people and equipment across oceans for the two rounds in the Americas is a complex and costly procedure, and MotoGP organizers Dorna most likely wanted to cancel earlier, rather than at the last minute.
