If you thought Bikers for Trump was a new kind of partisan political display by motorcyclists, well, everything's bigger in Brazil. On Saturday, thousands participated in a massive ride in support of — and led by — controversial President Jair Bolsonaro.
Bolsonaro is one of the national leaders most skeptical of the seriousness of the COVID-19 pandemic and most resistant to restrictions aimed at controlling its spread. He not only has resisted imposing national measures to control the virus but has also openly flouted local and regional governments' regulations to reduce the impact of the pandemic, which has killed an estimated 450,000 people in Brazil.
Bolsonaro is up for election next year and his popularity appears to be declining, but it's clear he can still draw a crowd of supportive motorcyclists, as the videos below show. "For freedom, for democracy and accelerate for God!" he shouted, launching the ride. News media estimates put the participation at around 12,000 motorcyclists, though some participants claimed wildly higher numbers.
