KTM offers its idea of the ideal track-day bike, in very limited numbers

Jul 22, 2021

KTM's idea of the perfect track day bike goes on sale today, so if you have 40 grand to spend on a track bike and want to have the rarest orange bike for your next outing, move fast. Only 100 are being made.

The bike is the RC 8C, described colorfully by KTM as "a limited production track-only motorcycle built to satisfy the apex-slaying needs of orange-bleeding track warriors." The RC 8C is bristling with top-end parts to ensure sharp handling and braking, but here are the numbers you're probably looking for first: 128 horsepower and 308 pounds dry weight. Yes, should be nimble and quick.

The power comes from the 889 cc parallel twin found in the 890 Duke R. It's an engine particularly beloved by Common Tread's orange-bleeder-in-residence, Spurgeon. Since the RC 8C is designed with track use in mind, it includes features such as quick-release body panels and it rolls on Pirelli SC1 race slicks. Weight-saving measures range from titanium bolts in the brake discs to aluminum Dymag wheels to a titanium Akrapovič exhaust.

Along with a purpose-built tubular steel frame, KTM fitted the RC 8C with top-notch suspension, a WP Apex Pro 7543 cartridge fork and a WP Apex Pro 7746 shock with adjustment for preload and both high-speed and low-speed rebound and damping. The Brembo brakes include Stylema front calipers and a 19RCS Corsa Corta radial master cylinder which KTM says allows the rider to adjust the "bite point" of the front brakes, similar to master cylinders used in MotoGP.

A five-inch TFT display includes a data logger and integrated GPS and will continuously log data from your ride, so if you spend nearly $40,000 on a purpose-built track bike and your lap times are still pathetic, you'll have nowhere to hide from the disappointment and shame. Just warning you.

But wait, there's more

If shelling out $38,999 for a track day bike isn't enough to cement your reputation as part of the economic elite in an era when the Bransons and Bezos of the world are nipping at the edges of space just for fun, then you can up the ante. Up to 25 RC 8C buyers can attend a special Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team test at the Circuito de Jerez in Spain. Not only do you get some riding tips from KTM MotoGP test riders Dani Pedrosa and Mika Kallio, but the package also includes an extra set of Dymag wheels, extra set of brake discs, front and rear paddock stands, tire warmers and a KTM race carpet for posing your RC 8C. I didn't even ask how much the track day costs, because you already know if you can afford it or not.

Order your RC 8C here if your blood is rich enough and orange enough and you want to be one of 100.
