Kannenberg motorcycle collection auction ranges from rare to odd to ordinary

Aug 31, 2021

Looking to buy a used motorcycle but fed up with craigslist dreamers and Facebook marketeers asking top dollar plus a premium for anything with wheels? Here's an unconventional alternative: Buy something unusual from the Kannenberg Collection auction.

Over the years, flat-track racer and motorcycle shop owner Denny "Kannonball" Kannenberg picked up a few motorcycles, to put it mildly. Plus loads of memorabilia and a few interesting cars, if you happen to be into that sort of thing. In 2019, Richard Rawlings of Gas Monkey Garage bought the entire collection, but the pandemic delayed his plans to sell off the pieces. Now, that auction is happening, September 10 and 11, at Worldwide Auctioneers in Auburn, Indiana. You can bid in person, online or by phone. In the video below, Rawlings walks through the collection with the man who assembled it.

Another interesting fact about the auction is that all 160-plus motorcycles, most of them in original condition, are for sale with no reserve.

So what's available? It's an eclectic collection, to say the least. The motorcycles range from the old and rare to bikes that are small or even, perhaps, mundane. While many are in original condition, there are also a few customs and quite a few race bikes, especially flat-trackers.

One of the flashier examples is a 1942 Indian Four with a sidecar. There's a 1981 Honda CBX with less than one mile on the odometer.

There's a 1973 Kawasaki Z-1 and a 2018 Kawasaki Z900RS that pays homage to that original, both with the same "root beer" paint.

Kannenberg Collection motorcycles and toys
The Kannenberg collection includes not just a lot of motorcycles, but also a huge amount of memorabilia, toys, signs and more. Worldwide Auctioneers photo.

Apparently Kannenberg never said to himself, "I already have one of those." The auction includes multiple 1960s Honda Dreams, three two-stroke Kawasaki H-1s and an H-2 in street trim and an H-2 drag bike, multiple examples of the late 1980s Honda GB500 café racer that was a sales flop turned cult bike. In addition to the zero-mile CBX there's a 1981 with 47,501 miles. There are multiple Honda MB5 two-stroke tiddlers and a veritable flock of minibikes.

You'll also find the odd and the unique, from a 1975 Suzuki RE5 rotary to a turbocharged 1982 Honda CX500TC that was a gift from Honda to drag racer "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, with the racer's signature still on the fairing. Ever seen a Hiawatha Doodlebug, a Briggs & Stratton-powered scooter from the 1950s?

And since there's no reserve on any of them, maybe you'll get a bargain.
