Indian FTR Championship Edition first look

Mar 10, 2022

The Indian FTR was born from a street-tracker concept bike, but the latest versions have strayed away from the flat-track styling. In some ways that makes them better street bikes, but it does little to capitalize on Indian's total domination of the American Flat Track series.

Since Indian came out with its FTR750 flat-track race bike, Indian riders have won every championship and the marque has won every manufacturer's title. The direction Indian has taken the FTR strongly suggests that most buyers want a better performing street motorcycle (thus features like the 17-inch wheels with sport rubber) more than they want a flat-track-styled bike. But there must be some flat-track fans out there who would love a street-legal bike that basks in some of that FTR750 all-conquering glory, right?

So here we have the FTR Championship Edition to do just that. Only 400 are being built, so it doesn't have to appeal to the masses, just to a few hundred fans of American Flat Track and Indian Motorcycles, which is why Indian unveiled it today at the opening round of the AFT series in Florida.

The guts of the Championship Edition are not much different from the other FTR models, from its 1,203 cc V-twin engine to its 4.3-inch digital display, so go read Zack's first ride piece from last year to get those basics.

The differences on the Championship Edition include adjustable suspension front and rear, a titanium Akrapovič exhaust and several carbon fiber bits, from the seat cowl to the headlight nacelle. The 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels wrapped in Dunlop tires suggestive of flat-track race tires and the ProTaper aluminum handlebar are flat-track touches.

Indian says the Championship Editions will begin shipping to dealers in North America next month and the price will be $16,499 in the United States and $19,499 in Canada.

The regular FTR will still be the better street bike for the masses, but if you're one of the fans whose favorite way to spend a Saturday night is to get a seat in the grandstand and watch the field get slideways through a lefthand turn at the county fair horse racing track, the FTR Championship Edition may be something rare and a little special that's just your style.
