It's not unreasonable to say that when it introduced the GSX-R750 four decades ago, Suzuki invented the modern sport bike.
Sure, there were there were motorcycles referred to as sport bikes before that first Gixxer was shown in 1984 at the motorcycle show in Germany known today as Intermot (the bike first hit the U.S. market in 1986). But the GSX-R750 changed the concept of a sport bike from a street motorcycle with added performance to a race bike with lights. That launched a multi-decade trend of race replicas becoming ever more focused on performance on the track, a trend that has only recently begun to reverse. But you can still get a new GSX-R750 (or a GSX-R1000R or GSX-R600) if your top priority is all-out performance.
For this motorcycle icons episode of the podcast, Common Tread's own Ari Henning settles behind the mic as co-host with Spurgeon Dunbar to talk about the history and evolution of the GSX-R, its world championships and years of AMA Superbike domination, and more.
