For how often electric motorcycles make the news, how often do you see them on the street, trail, or track?
We have exactly one electric motorcycle right now in the ZLA parking lot, a Zero that a Zillan uses for commuting. Aside from a few electric pocket bikes that zoom around our halls, that’s about it. Your experience is probably similar... unless you own an electric bike.
Does that mean electric motorcycles are getting a disproportionate amount of coverage around here? I don’t think so. We’re witnessing the development of modern electric motorcycles. You don’t have to look much farther than scooter sharing services to see how quickly EVs can catch on. Bird’s new sit-down electric scooters are even starting to look motorcycle-ish.
So what’s the state of electric motorcycling, and what role will these bikes play in our future? Lemmy, Spurgeon, and Joe are back on the couches for another discussion.
You surely have your own thoughts about electric motorcycles, as we all do. For any kind of motorcycle, I’d recommend this: Don’t knock it ‘til you’ve tried it. Electric motorcycles are really good at some things, and not what you’d want for others. (Lemmy certainly found that to be the case when he put the Zero DSR to the test on his grueling commute.) It’s all up to your wants and needs as a rider.
We’re sitting at a crucial moment in time for electric bikes. What happens next? Judging by our video, that depends who you ask.
